In this chapter i learned that a good teacher is entertaining, motivating, kind and patient, has a good subject knowledge, and does their best to involve all students in all activities. I also learned that a teacher has many roles several of which include managing the class, being a prompter, a tutor, a participant, a model, and a facilitator. And that children often are different to teach than adults. Adults are often more motivated, while children may absorb information easier especially if they are young. And finally i learned that a good learner listens, asks questions, wants to learn, accepts correction and thinks about the way they learn. The stages of learning a language are beginner, low to high intermediate and advanced.

There are various ways in which a teacher can influence the effectiveness of a learning environment for the students based on the teacher's own traits and the methods the teacher uses to engage the class. The teacher should assess the types of learners and the language levels of the students to beast accommodate their learning of the language. I have learned that adults and children often have different expectations from a teacher that may affect their ability to engage with certain teaching styles.

I feel one of the main goals I accomplished was learning to understand how to act like a proper teacher and show it, I learned the different qualities that good teachers should have and compared that to good teachers I had in High School. Alot of traits stand out to me I recognized and could learn from seeing them do these traits in a classroom for example seeing the teacher as an organizer, each teacher I've had always had a different way of teaching and organizing a class but still had an effective way to get the point across there organizing a day where we made flash cards or where we went on a school trip to a history museum. Another quality that stands out to me is the facilitator because I learned when if your not sure when the student is confident in there speaking or if you would like to encourage them to keep learning, you simply ask a follow up question about there subject to get a another response which in turn should motivate them to want to keep learning cause they feel like there learning more. I've also learned the different levels of being able to speak a language and why there being categorized. From starting to speak the language all the way up to advanced speaking where there confident to speak the language fluently with no errors. I learned a good amount from this first lesson and feel that I'm ready for lesson 2.

For this being my first unit I think I've learned a lot. I learned what Types of different roles there are as a teacher and how effective those roles can be on the students. Each role seemed like it would be useful to be in the work place and I understand from this lesson that I will need to learn to combine all strategies when teaching my students. I also learned a lot about the students themselves. I now realize the strategy of my teaching will have to be completely different based on what type of students I have. Whether they are adults or children... or even depending on what country I am in. I think this unit has taught me more of what to expect in these different atmospheres. Overall, I believe this was a successful start to the program and I am looking forward to learning more.

When entering a classroom, it is not only a good student that brings success in the teaching exercise, but also the chameleon teacher who is able to fill various roles. From motivating to understanding his students color or their mood; then being able to change or adapt his approach of the current lesson accordingly. Teaching is an immense responsibility and not to be taken lightly. It is a team effort, for the teacher would be obsolete if there were no students. However, the responsibility of inferring understanding, lies solely with the teacher. Yet a true teacher will find his greatest joy in the success of his students and not in his own expertise.

I also wouldn't mind if a lecture is longer.

This unit taught me the roles of the teachers and learners in class. It looked at some of the characteristics that make good teachers and learners, and some of the issues that may impact these characteristics. While there are things that make up good learners, good teachers generally have good learners. This units overall consisted of what makes a good teacher and a good student. It also explained language levels that both american and British teachers would recognize and be able to determine useful information from. I have absorbed the information from this section by both reading and taking ample notes as I read it. From the unit I have been able to review some points of previous knowledge. Those points include the relation to language learner level identification, teacher roles and how they might look in context. I have learnt that I may not be aware of all of the cultural innuendoes involved in various settings.

This unit has outlined the qualities of a good teacher and the various roles they 'play' within the classroom. It highlighted the differences encountered whilst teaching different age groups of students as well as outlining how student learning levels are set. It has made me think about the way in which I have been taught in the past and therefore the way I would approach teaching students myself. What I have taken away from this unit is how important the teacher student relationship is. It's very important that your students look at you as the source of knowledge, but also they need to feel comfortable, motivated and know that they can approach you with any question or matter. As a teacher I believe it is essential that you understand your students and what their needs are whatever language level they have achieved. With these qualities in your role as a teacher you will see success in your happy students.

I have learned the various characteristic, roles of both the adult and younger learner. The teacher has to be able to make each lesson varied and interesting and base the activities according to the needs and level of the students. I have also taken note of the now important it is for the teacher to know the background culture of learners to meet their individual needs. Of interest is the nervousness and behavior patterns that occur with the individual groups. The ability to encourage the students to use the English language and gently guiding them with feedback and praise, with corrections when necessary will build trust and confidence in the teacher.

I'm hoping the rest of the course carries a similar vibe to it, as this was quite fun to read through.

There were lots of things that I have learned from this unit. The key thing I learned is that teachers need to be patient. When teaching children or adults another language it's important to understand that they are learning something completely new. English is already a hard subject to learn even for people who use it as a first language. It is important to remember that by being patient with student, it allows a better class room environment.

The content of this first unit sets the framework for understanding the basic elements of a classroom. Understanding the features that define good teachers and good students allows one to visualize an ideal and compare him/herself and his/her past experiences to that ideal. Also, the explanation of the various roles a teacher may take on expands on the traditional teacher-oriented model of the classroom that might define the readers' past experience of a classroom environment and hints at other methods of instruction. I have personally learned that each of the teacher roles has its place in the classroom depending on the lesson and activity planned for the day. Also, being aware of the 9 features of a 'good' teacher as well as 6 features of a 'good' student allows me evaluate myself and my current classrooms. Hopefully I will be able to motivate students more individually with the new knowledge.

I learned about the different roles a teacher has and that those roles can be applied in different situations. The characteristics of different age groups and their motivation is definitely a good one to keep in mind. Knowing the difference between laguage levels is a very good starting point that I think I need to be very conscious of. In this first unit I have learnt about the importance of catering for the students learning needs, student-centred lessons, rather than focusing on teacher-centred lessons. Also, the different roles a teacher should adopt when necessary. I found interesting the different approaches needed for teaching adult learners and young learners, as well as the different language levels. Unit one explains the qualities possessed by a "good"" teacher

Unit one covers the basic aspect of the interaction between the teacher and students regarding their roles, responsibilities and motivation. It shows that a good teacher must possess a number of skills and positive attributes to astutely assess the needs of each student and actively Guide the course so that each student is continually motivated to actively participate in the course. Further the teacher must be aware of the relevant language spectrum for the respective language levels that the students possess and execute the teaching content and activities within that range. This unit explains that a teacher must not only have certain qualities, such as patience or a clear understanding of their subject matter, but must also be able to establish good relationships with their students in order to further understand their personalities and needs. By understanding how the student learns and their motivation for learning English, a teacher can then implement an appropriate method of learning. The unit continues to elaborate on the different roles a teacher will take in the classroom. In order to have a dynamic and healthy classroom, a teacher must take on different roles to introduce new information, engage the class, and allow students to practice the subject matter. These roles will vary according to the different goals of the class and the Type of students in the class as well. Students have different learning spans and problems associated with their age, culture, and English ability. For example, adult learners have more life and learning experience which can bring more diversity to the classroom, but may also have fixed views on learning languages or other subject matters. Therefore, a good teacher must come to understand their student's perspective to implement the best lesson. I currently teach English to Junior High School students in a small country-side city in japan, and have found that one of the greatest struggles is the students' disinterest in speaking aloud. This is greatly influenced by japanese classroom culture, where the most diligent students are considered to be the ones who do not speak aloud in class or exhibit any disruptive behavior. Language level may also prevent the students from volunteering in class because they do not want to publicly make a mistake. This unit has given me a new perspective on some of my students' struggles.", This unit explains the characteristics of both learners and teachers. It describes positive methods teachers should use and possible negative outcomes that may result of teachers not balancing these methods in the classroom. It also looks at different levels of learners and what to expect from these different groups of students., The whole introduction was very wonderful for me. At a point I felt they were reporting about me. I just reflected on my very past when I was learning a second language and the sort of processes I went through. Infact my personal experience helped me to pin this down very quickly because I related everything in it to myself. Everything in relation to the psychology of adult learners and young learners were all well spot on. I am impressed and hope the rest of the units will keep my motivation level high like this one., I've come to realize that there are a lot of dynamics in the teaching/learning experience. There are a number of factors I have to consider when teaching

I did expect the units to be a bit more interactive as you are absorbing the information - maybe a couple of simple multiple choice questions would be a good idea. It was my great pleasure to study unit one, I found the roles of the teacher and the relationships between learners and teachers very interesting and comprehensive. I was already aware of the language levels, however it was useful to review it again. For me, the main point is that there is a necessity to strike a balance; a balance between ?good teachers? and ?good students.? Teacher?s must adopt and adapt their methods and roles in coordination with students? culture, background, age, and level, to Name a few. Lastly, motivation is key.

Being a part-time teacher of English to students of an entirely different cultural up bringing from Mine, this unit ?Teachers and Learners? has been so rewarding to me. I have learnt it is important not only to know how divide my time well for the planned activities, but also to know when to be in full control of the class and also, when to kind of observant; checking the response my students give to the lesson. I feel it is necessary that they too have a part in ?teaching?, and not only the ?learning?. The technic of engaging the students, use of miming, gestures and the switching of voices to enhance and encourage student?s attention is also a very important lesson I have learnt from this unit. Lastly, I am also strongly for the notion of having my students abstain from using their local language in class but it seems almost impossible to have them do so, at times, they even get mad at me when I try to give the class entirely in English, not explaining any instruction in their local language. They seem to lose entire interest in the class and claim they don't understand anything. I hope this kind of problem is addressed in units yet to be covered. Thomas Ngulube.", For unit one

As I reflect on Unit 1 and what I've learnt, the question, ?What makes a good teacher and learner?? comes to mind. A good teacher emphasis learning, versus solely teaching. A good learner demonstrates the desire to learn, and not just within the classroom environment. Teachers have multiple roles including managing, organizing, assessing, prompting, participating, facilitating, modeling and observing. The later roles might seem less authoritative, but it is equally important, which makes the overall role of the teacher more accountable toward the learning objectives of all the students. There are many learner variables that create challenges for teachers, which include: The student?s age, previous learning experiences, nervousness/anxiety, language awareness, behavior problems, life experiences, culture and first language, the student?s language level, and the motivation to take the course. A student?s motivation spans from general interest to life changing endeavors, such as traveling or living in primarily English speaking country. The teacher is more visual at the lower skill levels until the student?s skills increase, which creates a more communicative, versus instructing environment. The biggest variation between adults and young learners is mainly attention span. Nonetheless, the teacher must make the learning experience enjoyable and rewarding and adapt according to student variations. When it comes to categorizing the assessment of learners, I?m more familiar with the following terminology: Above average, average and below average. So, this means it will take some time to become familiar with the six levels presented by the Common european Framework, which include: Breakthrough, Basic User, A1; Waystage, Basic User, A2; Threshold, Independent User, B1; Vantage, Independent User, B2; Effective Operational Proficiency, Proficient User, C1; Mastery, Proficient User, C2.", The characteristics of a good teacher that I've learned

The point of this unit is to teach new/beginning language teachers some very important classroom dynamics: examples of what a good teacher looks like, and what a good learner looks like. It also covered several more intricate details, such as the stages of language learning and how to tell who is a beginner, intermediate, advanced, etc. As someone who already teaches and understands classroom dynamics, I really learned a lot about adult learners. I teach younger students typically and many of the considerations you have for your classroom are quite different for adults.

Unit one of this course taught me that a good teacher has the capacity to play many roles in the classroom. The particular role required of a good teacher depends on the context and circumstances of the situation (e.g., the skill level of the students). With practice and a genuine desire to help the students grow, a good teacher should eventually be able to determine which role is necessitated by the circumstances of the situation.

It's interesting to note that it 'takes two to tango' in the classroom. However, a good teacher has the power to enact a variety of roles to encourage and motivate good learners. Certainly, learning a language cannot be successful unless learners are given many opportunities to practice In-class. There is some necessity for instruction and drilling but this needs to be combined with prompting and assessment as well as practice, practice, practice! It's also interesting to note the the differing motivations between young learners and adult learners. I am currently volunteer-teaching adult Iranian refugees and have found the motivation levels very high - they wish to speak English to better assimilate to the country that they will eventually end up living in. That said, I still have to be culturally sensitive to their needs as well as a mini-ambassador of my own country. I have encountered difficulties with a wide variety of levels within my class so note with interest the learning level categories and hope to learn more about how to cater to this in future units!

This unit has taught me what it means to be a good teacher as well as what makes a good learner. I learned new basic ways to engage the class that I did not know Before, such as participating and becoming a facilitator. I also learned that there is value in making small notes for myself while working in the role of a monitor. If I keep those notes, it will help me to better understand the progress of individual students outside of organized assessments, as well as remind me who might need more assistance when I am in the role of a tutor. Learning what a good learner looks like can also help me to become a better teacher because I can see which students are motivated and which ones are not. If I can tell that some students are not as motivated as others and are not falling into the guidelines of a "good learner

Knowing the different levels students are at from beginners to advanced along with the challenges different ages encounter was very important in this unit. Explanation given in the unit about teachers and learners will help not just in teaching, but everyday life amongst family, friends, peers and coworkers. I felt the issues adults may encounter culturally is very valuable. Even though many adults may have more motivation than some of the younger learners, they have a bigger fear of failure which can be quite intimidating to start learning a new language.

This unit is a good refreshment for me. I handle chinese pre-puberty learners who mostly have difficulties in expressing themselves in English and have a little desire to learn the language. Studying this unit helps me realize that it is my responsibility to encourage them even more to be successful learners. I am excited to learn more in the next units.

Unit 1 is an overview of what makes a good teacher, a good student, classroom roles and language levels. It outlines the various roles a teacher might fill in any given class - as a manager, a monitor, organiser, facilitator, participant in or observer of activities, a model and resource, prompter and tutor. An effective teacher must love teaching and be a good communicator; have broad knowledge of the subject; be polite, enthusiastic, able to motivate students while at the same time able to correct them without offending them. An effective teacher is also a good organiser and must be able to recognise student weaknesses and offer individual help. Finally, a good teacher will know when to assume which role, when, be able to motivate students to learn the language, and have a basic knowledge of cultural difference that could affect learning and classroom behavior. A good learner must have a desire to learn, be willing to listen to the language at all times, experiment with it, and be willing to ask questions. They also should be able to assess their own learning and accept error correction. Language proficiency is divided into six basic levels - Beginner/Breakthrough (A1); Elementary/Waystage (A2); Pre-Intermediate/Threshold (B2); Intermediate/Vantage (B2); Upper-Intermediate/EOP (C1); Advanced/Mastery (C2). Actual meaning of these terms may differ depending on location and texts in use. In my experience, a student might be at one level for written work, another for spoken. Lower-level students can see progress easily while intermediate and upper-level students might feel they have reached a plateau and continue to make habitual errors. A good teacher must be able to motivate students to progress with their learning.

I've learnt from the unit that cooperation between teachers and learners is a very important issue. A good teacher should possess certain qualities as well as experience in order to bring up good learners. A teacher should take into consideration such aspects as the age of students, their language proficiency, cultural features and motivation. According to these aspects teacher devises activities, lesson plans, norms of conduct, etc. Teacher performs certain roles during the lesson. Teacher is to take control over the whole activity in the class; a good teacher should know when to assist, when to let students work independently. A good teacher is the one who keeps their students motivated.

This first unit was very informative as to what is expected of both teachers and students. It was interesting to note that teachers must 'love teaching.' For me as an employer of teachers, this is a point I must remember when considering new teachers and if I ever feel disheartened with my own teaching. Instead, I should find ways to keep myself and the students motivated. It would be good keeping in mind the roles of the teacher as they can easily be forgotten or left out at times. A good teacher must also be sure to understand each individual student's needs, levels and reasons for study.

This unit does a basic overview of four different elements: qualities of good teachers, qualities of good learners, different teaching styles, and language competency levels. Good teachers are based on personality and connection with students. They are kind, patient, passionate about teaching and the students learning, approachable, and energetic. They can connect with students equally, are able to give supportive and useful corrections and feedback, and build rapport with students. Good learners have a willingness to learn the language, ask questions when they need help, take corrections in stride, and actively participate in the language learning process. Different teaching styles allow teachers to approach the class in different ways. A teacher can monitor, manage, organize, facilitate, participate, or assess their students. Different language levels allow teachers and students to better move forward with learning. They go through beginner, elementary, low intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. The sliding scale is measured by fluency, accuracy, and use of correct grammar to ascertain levels.

This unit focused on the role of the teacher relative to the students' backgrounds. A teacher will sometimes need to stay at the board and keep the classroom focused on the information in the lesson. Other times it may be necessary for the teacher to set up more diverse activities in order to keep the class interested. In this case, it is appropriate to remain involved with the students' progress by providing feedback and guidance. These different roles allow for a great deal of versatility, depending on each student's motivations, character, and relationship with education. If the teacher understands what the class needs from her and is sensitive to the class dynamic, she will be more likely to successfully communicate the material.

This unit broke down the roles a teacher must play on a daily basic. When thinking about what a teacher does we often think that they teacher but we must remember that teacher must play different roles inside the classroom depending on the activity or lesson that is being taught. I particularly like the point about being a prompter; I believe this is a valuable role that all teacher need to take. Teachers must recognize when to allow the student to work it out on their own and when to move the conversation, activity, or lesson in a different direction. What makes a good learner and how to breakdown students into different categories is also an important part that all teacher must remember in order to better accommodate every student. As mentioned in the unit motivation plays an important role into student?s willingness to learn. Finding and being able to motivate each and very student is changeling. However this lesson broke down some of the reasons and I believe that knowing these reasons would be able to help any teacher now matter how many year of teaching experiences they have.", this first part of the course introduces the motivation to be a good teacher or a good student and the criteria by which students are divided according to their degree of preparation. For Unit 2, I learned that I have a lot of the parts of speech to memorize with each definition, rules, exceptions, and examples. Not only do I need to memorize these details, but I need to know how to explain the parts of speech in relation to the sentence. However, one can explain the parts of speech in multiple ways and from different perspectives. One can explain the parts of speech from the perspective of the subject and/or from the perspective of the action, and etc. I also learned that shorter concise explanations are sometimes more helpful when learning a lot of detailed parts at once.

Rules that we as native english speakers follow every day without a second thought but that are very important to take note of if we are going to teach them to a non native speaker. Because I've grown up speaking English the thing I need to watch out for the most are cases where I think I understand the grammar because I know what sounds correct and what doesn't. Not knowing the actual principle behind what to say and not to say means I won't be able to explain or describe it, and that would be very frustrating to a student. Since "having a good grasp of the material"" is important to being a teacher
