It also talks about the different levels of learners as well as what motivates students to learn English. The section is comprehensive and elaborated on the teacher's various roles however I do feel like some of the roles could be more defined between each other. The unit puts in words ideas about learners and teachers that are taken for granted. As such, it is a good reminder of what a healthy and resourceful relationship should be like.

What I have learned from this unit is not only what I should look for in my future ESL students, but what they should expect from me as their teacher. Not only should I hope for motivated and interested students, but I should be able to motivate them, or at least strive to motivate them and keep them interested in the day's lesson. I also came to understand the sometimes significant differences and unique challenges that arise from teaching different age groups. For instance, the notion that adults will be more motivated learners since they are most likely in class on their own accord makes sense, but there is also more potential for cultural differences to become a problem as well as teaching practices.

I learned the fundamentals of the teacher/student relationship and dynamic. I found it very helpful. This unit clearly defines the teachers different roles in the classroom and the students as well. In this unit I learned about the difficulties I may encounter as a teacher. I also learned that teaching English can be a very fulfilling career if done for the right reasons. I will teach students in all age groups and each group will be motivated by a different desire to learn. The idea is to cater my teaching style to whichever group I'm currently instructing to make sure they are taking advantage of and getting the most out of my lectures. This lesson also covered what it means to be a good learner and gave an overview of the types of students I will encounter.

In conclusion I have learned the differences with the role of the teachers (as I didn't realize their was so many) and the roles of the students. In this first course I have learned the full range of roles that a teacher fulfills. Although I have experience in witnessing and fulfilling these roles, it was interesting to see them broken down into specific actions and uses. Unit one of the tefl course provided valuable insight into the teacher-student relationship. It highlighted the need for different teaching methods to be employed when teaching students of different ages or language levels. In particular I found it interesting how the teacher can perform different roles in the class to keep classes varied and refrain from creating a boring, monotoned style of teaching. I feel that this unit allowed me to understand the various levels of language advancement and as such gave me a hint of the age group of students I would like to teach. As is the need of the teacher to identify the strengths of each student it is also necessary that the teacher identify the age group which they wish to teach such that they can perform to the best of their own ability which will improve the ability of the teacher to establish a good rapport and in turn be beneficial for the students themselves.

This unit was very helpful in explaining the necessary attributes important for teacher success as well as the various roles a teacher must acquire in order to be effective in their work in tefl. It highlighted the various types of learners that a teacher can encounter based on the age and cultural background of each prospective student class. The unit further elaborated on the differences associated with each learning group and how a teacher can most appropriately address them in order to devise lessons and conduct classes that engages all students to learn. It also introduced a rating system used by international schools to categorise student ability that teachers can use to monitor students and accomplish accuracy in their teaching and assessment of each individual.

I believe that this Unit did an excellent job covering the basics of student-teacher interaction. I also learned more in depth the different roles a teacher fulfills in a classroom and how to balance those roles appropriately. The teachers have to love teaching and have a good subject knowledge and understanding the variety of the teaching groups to make the best results. Teachers who understand the differences of the teaching groups can approach the students with different ways of teaching method so that the students can be more motivated and involved in the class. I learned a lot about the different teacher roles. While there are many different roles, I realize that we have to be able to balance between many of them. You can't be a "good teacher"" if you are always in the front of the class

In this unit I learned about the different roles a teacher plays in a classroom. A teacher acts as a manager, organizer, assessor, prompter of information, participant, tutor, facilitator, model and monitor. I also was given clear examples on how a teacher fills these roles. In this unit I also learned about different ways learners act. I learned about different motivations, experiences and behaviors and how these all play a role in how a teacher should adapt materials to apply to each set of learners. However the most interesting thing I learned in this unit was the different classification of learners- specifically what determines if a learner is a beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate... etc and what skills each learner will have to reach that level.

It was very useful to be prompted to think about what motivates people to learn English, there being a variety of reasons and these may be dependent on the age of the learner. I was not aware that there was no international agreement on levels of learner and that european levels such as A1 and A2 existed. It was interesting to perceive the teacher in so many different roles- as a model, assessor, prompter, tutor, manager, facilitator, observer and even as a participant. The unit was a valuable first step in becoming an English teacher.

From this unit I have learnt that a good teacher is compassionate with a certain amount of empathy for the students and their individual situations. They should be able to motivate others, whilst have a passion for teaching. Teachers should also be able to focus on individual strengths and weaknesses in order to help and encourage students in their learning process. One of the greatest challenges for a teacher maybe the audience. For example young learners may have less motivation. Most young learners Haven't made an active choice to study a language and would rather be doing something else with their free time. Such as playing with friends and may see learning as a rather boring activity, compared to playing computer games or watching TV for example. As a teacher it is important to also acknowledge age, cultural background, ability to learn and personal situations such as demotivation for example a child being bullied and encourage the child to talk about it and build a rapport with the student. If the classes are interactive and visual this creates a sense of fun as well as learning and then the students will want to come to class and enjoy learning new things.

As a teacher it is mandatory to understand where the students are in their lives and more importantly that the self importance in second to student accomplishment. Facilitation of the students should be paramount as well as the understanding of the subject. Providing motivation, manufactured or siphoned, will only further interest in the target. Providing constructive criticism in a way that is acceptable is necessary as well. Being an assessor is the most important skill, because without it teaching the students the proper level will not be possible.

This unit dealt mainly with understanding the basic teacher-learner structure of a classroom. It covered the characteristics of a good teacher, as well as outlining the different roles a teacher may take in a classroom. As well, it defined a good learner, dividing learners up by their age groups as well as ability levels and addressing the differences in these hierarchies. Though I was aware many of my teachers have served different roles over the years, it was particularly helpful for me to be able to explicitly define these roles, so that I can hopefully eventually find ways to appropriately fill them in my own classroom.

The Teachers and Learners unit provided a good overview of the general roles that an English teacher has to assume and offered good insight into when each role may be applicable. It also provided useful information into some of the general traits that learners have and additionally pointing out how different English speaking levels, age, backgrounds and cultural heritage can all effect how they learn. This has offered me insight into thinking about which teacher role or combination of roles may be applicable in certain situations with various students or groups of students.

Teachers and Learners has been a very helpful unit by providing insight into the roles of both the instructor and the student. I have gained a deeper understanding of what my future responsibilities will be upon completion of my course studies and training as well as a greater appreciation for the teachers and professors throughout my grade school and university learning experiences. After studying the roles of the teacher outlined in this unit, I have reflected on these past experiences in an attempt to identify the ways in which the mentors of my adolescence have influenced my education over the years. I am noticing that those who have had the greatest impact on my learning are the teachers who took upon themselves not one, two, or even three roles, but who took on nearly every role listed in this unit and did so seamlessly. The teachers who managed the classroom and commanded the attention of us students while prompting and encouraging us throughout their lectures with though-provoking questions or anecdotes increased our understanding far more than repetitive note-taking or simple question-answer session ever did. Those who coordinated class activities by placing us in groups to discuss the topic-at-hand among ourselves, seemingly played the role of organizer; however, it is clear to me now, in hindsight, that they were also acting as much more. As monitors, they walked around the classroom, listening and adding further information when needed, and learned more about us in order to present the information in ways that were better tuned to our individual and collective learning methods. As facilitators, they instructed us to write essays or develop laboratory experiments, never hesitating to provide new paths for us to consider taking our individual research when we lost a clear direction to follow, though they did not disregard the need for us to take initiative ourselves in these circumstances. Likewise, every time a teacher seemed to be acting as participant in the class, they still exhibited characteristics of one who has mastered the subject and exemplified within themselves the proper model for us to follow after during our learning development. Not every teacher acted in these ways, but those that did left an impression on me that has continued to help shape the learner and future educator that I which to become. Along with developing and understanding of qualities expressed by good teachers, I have begun to comprehend the need to know what attributes are shown by good students. Again, I found myself reflecting throughout this unit on my own strengths and weaknesses as a student and on how I have come to progress further through my education. Within every subject or course, I began as a starter, with very minimal knowledge, and I managed to advance to the level of mastery by no matter of mere intellect. I realize that my progression as a student has required me to ask questions without hesitation, to volunteer my work to be placed under scrutiny of my professors and peers alike, and to simply discover within myself the motivation and passion to continue my learning processes even in the most difficult of course studies. All in all, this first unit has brought to light many aspects that have been a part of my growth up to this point, and I find it an excellent starting point for this course. I look forward to advancing through each unit and unmasking the intricacies of education both on the side of teacher and that of learner.

It also distinguishes among several roles that the teacher may assume and where and when it is appropriate to assume each role. Distinction is also made among learners with different levels of English ability. Even though I am an experienced teacher, it is always refreshing to see what makes a good teacher and what I, as a teacher, should encourage in learners to make them a good learner. This unit has reinforced my belief that a good teacher should build a good rapport with students, be patient, empathetic, fair, and be able to differentiate according to the needs of each individual student. The comparison between adult learners and young learners will also definitely help me shape my instruction to better meet the needs the students. Based on the generalized comparisons, adults will be more motivated but will be more "stubborn"" and stick to the rules of their native language. I really enjoyed this introductory unit and all the information provided. I really liked to read about differences in children's and adults' learning processes. The chapter listing students' levels helped me to comprehend what to expect from learners at particular stages of their studies. My overall reflection focuses upon the importance of the learners' motivation and awareness of their own responsibility for their success. Now, I see that my first and most essential role is to awaken in my students' hearts the desire to travel, live and work abroad, have international friends and access to foreign literature and resources, and enhance their chances on the job market. Upon reflection, I have learnt from Unit 1 that a 'good teacher' is most likely to have 'good students'. Unit 1 has given me a lot of examples of how the teacher can act during the lessons ( roles ) and has paid my attention to cultural differences which may occur in the classroom. In addition, I have learnt that teaching adults and children is quite different and that young learners are divided into three groups. I think that a good teacher should approach each student individually ( for example talking about subjects that interest the student or showing a will to learn about student's hobbies etc. ) but should not favor anyone and should inovle every student equally. Distinctions between the different levels of the English language may help me to decide which group of students would suit me most.

In this unit I felt that I have gained a better understanding of classroom dynamics and in particular, the importance of teacher and student relation in regards to learning successfully. I have also gained better insight into what makes a good teacher and what makes a good student, as well as the varying levels in English each individual student has and that a teacher may encounter. I particularly found interesting the different roles a teacher may undertake and switch around with during a class and personally I have observed such roles being played out from teachers throughout my many years of schooling; usually from good teachers! But I had never really noticed or analysed it until now that it's been broken down into such clear components!

This unit described different types of teachers and learners. It went over attributes of both good teachers and good learners, as well as the different types of teaching modes and the different stages of learning. In addition, it talked about ages being a big factor in motivation for students, something I personally have found to be true. It was interesting to be able to relate the modes of teaching to some of the different styles of teaching I hadn't realized I was adopting while teaching myself.

Reading the first Unit has made me realize that becoming a good teacher requires much practice, knowledge, energy, enthusiasm and respect towards the students. Motivation and encouragement are the beginnings of teaching a language or improve a new language from beginner to advanced levels. It is also important to maintain the attention of the students with diversity, entertainment and conversation with one another. Therefore, the teacher should always respect the student with kindness, encouragement, individual guidance of the english language when needed and vice versa. These characteristics of teaching will make it more enjoyable to learn as well as to teach. :-)

Having taught already it wasn't really very helpful for me. I did find the section listing the six levels of the Common european Framework interesting. This unit deals about teachers and learners. A good teacher, on top of being kind, patient, motivating, entertaining, has to interact with all students equally, and has to assume different roles. This unit helps the teacher define the situations and the people that he/she will encounter in the classroom in a clear and concise manner.

This unit was a great introductory lesson on how important is the relationship between a good teacher and a good learner. They both need to work jointly to ensure the correct comprehesion of the language. As a teacher, it was surprisingly satisfactory to find out that the behaviours and motivation levels, depending on every age range, are very well described and also how similar or different they could be around the world. I personally think that motivation is the clue factor in teaching English (and mostly in every subject), so all the attempts to prepare a good lesson, entertained and with proper content must work together with an open an easy going teacher's personality, to assure the correct understanding, comprehesion, learning and continuous motivation of all the students.

To summarize the lesson, I learned the expectations of good teachers and the different levels of learners you will encounter while teaching. I must understand the different roles I will have as a teacher and learn to switch into those specific roles when the situation calls either as a organizer, prompter, participant, facilitator, or tutor. I will learn the difference of teaching adults and young learners and how to accommodate the needs of my students whether they are starting out as beginner level english learner or an advanced level learner. This unit was a great review for me. Being a native speaker and having earned a university degree I have studied grammar Before but not for a very long time. In particular I needed some review of prepositions and conjunctions. I had also forgotten the terminology for some things, such as the different types of pronouns. Although I understand it intuitively I had never considered that there exists a proper order for adjectives and adverbs. The example given of describing a bottle will help me to remember the proper order of adjectives.

I learnt parts of speech in details. There are 9 parts of speech: noun, adjective, article, verb, adverb, gerund, pronoun, preposition and conjunction. Nouns can be common (just ordinary nouns), proper (Names of somebody or something with a capital letter), compound (2 nouns joined to a new one), abstract (describe some idea), collective (name of the group as if they were one). Also nouns can be coutable (can be singular and plural) and uncountable (just singular). Adjectives describe nouns (basic rule is size-age-colour-material order). When we want to compare 2 things we use comparative adjectives ( short adjective +er, more+ long adjective). When we want to say that something is super we use superlative adjective (the short adjective +est, the most+ long adjective). There are some irregular forms of comparatives and superlatives. Articles can be definite (the) and indefinite(a/an). Verbs can be transitive (need object after verb) and intransitive (no object after verb). Verbs have base form (infinitive), past simple (+ed), past participle (+ed) and present participle (+ing). Also we have irregular verbs that has no rules about their formation. Adverbs describe verbs. There are 5 main types: manner, place, time, degree and frequency. Gerund is the ing form of a verb used as noun. Pronouns replace nouns. Types: personal, possessive, reflexive, relative. Prepositions show relationships between words in sentence. Main types: time/Date, movement, place/position. Conjunctions join words or clauses of sentence.

This Unit was an excellent reminder of the basic rules of English. As a native speaker it is instinctual to know general word order, and when a sentence doesnt exactly feel correct, but not to really understand why. Refreshers over things such as the difference between adjectives and adverbs, Nouns and Gerunds, and the articles of address will be very helpful when trying to explain these concepts to students. I also never understood the difference between a preposition and a concunction. Now that I understand a Preposition is used to show the relationship in a sentence, while a conjunction joins lists or clasues, it should really help when trying to explain senetence structure to ESL students.

In this unit i have learned about parts of speech. Parts of speech therefore can be referred to each word in a particular sentence that can be classified according to its purpose and the meaning it gives. This is important as it allows us to explain the purpose of, and rules governing, each word or group of words in any sentence as well as the order in which these elements work together. This was fun. It brought back a lot of memories from school. It was nice to touch base with the fundamentals of grammar again. This has been very informative on grammar yet very difficult. In order for one to excel in grammar you will have to read a lot more on the topic and the exceptions that makes it more difficult. Some old fashioned studying is necessary to learn basic rules like the word the that is always a definite article where as a and an is indefinite. There are more examples as such which should all just be studied and one should always have them correct. Other words do get tricky but again here the rules should be memorized and just continuous practice will make perfect. Grammar is definitely not intended for beginner learners and should only come into play at a more advance level.

This whole unit was on grammar. This was actually a bit difficult for me, i can use grammar correctly but i was never able to tell you what parts of grammar each word in a sentences, however this lesson forced me to learn the differences, it's very tricky since many of the categories have similar names but i was able to understand the difference in the end so i now feel competent in teaching others the same thing.

Even as a native English speaker, I found this chapter to be fairly difficult. The english language has a lot of exceptions to the rules making it hard for the learner to grasp. Because of this, I would think that lots of interactive activities would be extremely helpful in getting the students to understand more fully and quickly. The content of this unit is comprehensive and makes you realize how much there is to know to teach. Enjoyed relearning school grammar. The video gives good clues how to teach grammar in a straight forward manner. Feel so much more confident about grammar knowledge. I could've never imagine how complex English grammar is. Totally incredible was to get familiar with all these complicated names which stand for our everyday speech. Gerund is absolutely amazing. I loved it! Not only existence of transitive and intransitive verbs overwhelmed me, but also vast variety of prepositions. Thank you, guys!

This unit was a great refresher course of the different grammatical rules within the English language. We use English without even thinking about how difficult it actually is to learn. There were a number of different rules that help explain things, however we never have to learn them because we heard and learned English growing up. This unit was also a very comprehensive study of the different parts of speech, including some of the less known ones like gerunds or conjunctions. It enhanced or solidified different pieces of the English learning process.

This unit was a breathe of fresh air. I reviewed the material presented in the PDF and although I have been dealing with much of this material for the past ten years there were still a few concepts that were explained very well. I am glad that this was included in the curriculum because I even though I consider myself a great educator and accomplished teacher, my grammar skills are not the best.

What I learned in depth was the terms used to Name the parts of speech, as it said in the introduction, it is obvious to us because it just 'sounds right'. I had fun in this unit but had a little trouble with the verb part, especially the diference between transitive and intrasitive verbs. I think it is extremely useful information.

In this unit I have learnt the parts of speech that are needed to construct sentences. I have reminded myself of all the parts of speech that I have learnt at school and also use everyday. I have also learnt the use of each part of speech and function to be able construct better sentences and make better use of the correct language.

This unit dealt with the parts of speech. It is the fundamentals of grammar in language. English grammar can be very difficult for native speakers of other languages, particularly when it comes to articles and the forms of verbs. As a native English speaker, it is sometimes easy to overlook the importance of learning the parts of speech, as they come naturally to us. Teaching English requires you to learn about what the words in a sentence actually are instead of just their meanings. Consider a gerund. Before this unit I had never heard of this word, yet I knew how to use them within a sentence without any hesitation. This unit is very informative, especially in giving general names for categories of words so that, as a teacher, we will be able to explain them to our students.

This unit has been an excelllent review for me of the basics of Enligsh grammar. I especially learned alot about verb tenses and the best ways to order words within sentences. Reviewing the parts of English grammar has also helped me to understand some of the typical problems students could encounter in the classroom as native spanish speakers. This unit shows the basic grammar. It is very helpful to browse the common basic grammar. But question number 10 is a little confusing, because there are many different usage for one preposition. Anyway this unit motivated me to read and study the grammar book again which I learned at high school. Studying the content of this unit has given me the chance to brush up on my knowledge of English grammar. I feel it has increased because it has helped me to identify different types of nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, pronouns and prepositions. I have also learned where they should be placed in a sentence.

This unit presents and explains the parts of speech including: articles, nouns, pronouns, verbs, advers, adjectives, prepositions and conjunctions. As you mention, it has been a long time since I have thought about grammar. I am impressed at how difficult this language might seem to someone learning it as an adult. The many rules and the irregularities, which I have taken for granted for so long, seem a particular challenge.
