I learned that a good teacher not only requires me to know the subject matter, but also be engaging with the students, helping them learn in more than one way. A good teacher has to do more than just lecture. They should also organize activities that help the student learn by themselves or in a group. A good learner is a student that has a willingness to be in the classroom and to engage in activities and lessons. They are not passive but more active in their own education. Young students and adult students not only learn differently, they also may have different motivations. A young learner is told to be in school learning, but an adult willingly chooses to be their and will be more active in the learning experience. There are many different levels of language knowledge, all of which need to be taught in different ways.

I learned the Common european Framework as it relates the general categories for categorizing a student. I also learned the breakdown of children learners, and was surprised but interested to learn that the most difficult group of children are the 13-plus learners. Finally, I learned that it is important to assess the student's motivation and use that motivation to increase their desire to learn and participate, and to not squelch that desire by correcting mistakes every single time.

I think this section gave an over-view of the classroom environment and scenarios but had little to do with teaching English. I have worked at the University level for over 17 years and have taught many courses in Visual Arts, so I have encountered many of the situations decribed.I can see how this information might have interest to someone who has never taught Before. I did not read it too closely because of this, but answered the questions based on my own experience.

In this unit we learnt the qualities, roles and responsibilities of both teacher and students in the classroom Qualities of a good teacher: A good teacher should be kind and patient. A good teacher should really love teaching. A good teacher should be lively and entertaining. A good teacher is able to motivate learners. A good teacher has a good knowledge of his subject. A good teacher should have good rapport and interaction with the class. A good teacher should be able to involve all students equally throughout the lesson. A good teacher should be able to correct students without offending them or affecting their motivation. Though all the above mentioned qualities together or partially go to make an ideal teacher, however some are more important than the others. To me qualities of kindness, love and patience are most important. Second comes his ability to keenly observe his students and motivate them in such a way, that each is encouraged in his own efficiency. In absence of these qualities even a devoted and knowledgeable teacher would not be able to motivate his students. The role of a teacher: The role that we employ depends on the Type of activity and what we wish the students to achieve. Some stages of a lesson will require that the teacher is more dominating or leading while others will require a more withdrawn role. During a typical lesson a teacher will have some or all of the following roles. 1. Manager or Controller: When teachers take on the role of a controller, they are in charge of the class and of the activity in a way that is quite different from an activity where the students are working on their own, in pairs or as part of a group. 2. Organizer: This role is one of the most important as it involves giving instructions, organizing students into groups / initiating activities, bringing activities to a close and organizing feedback. 3. Assessor: In this role a teacher acts as an assessor by giving feedback and correction as well as evaluating and grading. 4. Prompter: Some students while learning hesitate to ask or get stuck up in their constructions of language or while performing some activity related to learning. It is here that an able teacher without making the student realize that he is being helped gently prompts him without destroying his initiative to learn. 5. Participant: At certain stages of the lesson, the teacher may participate in the lesson as an equal, not as the teacher to liven activities up from inside of the group or evening the number of students for pair work activities with an uneven number of participants. 6. Tutor: Tutoring is a more personal role for the teacher. This role is used when students are working individually and need some guidance and support or when they are working in pairs. 7. Facilitator: In this role the teacher needs to be available as a resource in case the students require any assistance or guidance. Though a teacher should let the students make their own constructions and sentence, but at times there arises a situation when he needs to help out and facilitate without killing their initiative. 8. Model: A teacher is a role model for all his students therefore he should be well versed in the language, its grammar, vocabulary and proper pronunciation. His knowledge should be complete and proper as only then would he be able to present himself as a model for his entire class to follow. 9. Observer or Monitor: A teacher though should encourage his class to take initiative in the learning process but, at the same time he needs to observe them from a distance if they need guidance. Or correction without disturbing them. He can make a notice of the students who need coaxing and perform these tasks later. His keen observation also helps him in assessment of his students. Qualities of a good learner: Qualities that a successful learners usually have are :- ? A willingness to listen to the language. ? A desire to experiment with the language. ? An ability to think about their own learning process and methods. ? An acceptance of error correction. ? A desire to learn. Learners can be broadly divided into two groups ? young learners and adults. Generally, adults are those who are18 years of age or more. However, there are three categories of young learners. First is the post puberty or early teenage learner ie, 13 plus, who is often unmotivated , self conscious and unwilling to take risk or experiment with language. Second is the pre - puberty learner, corresponding to primary school or 8 to 12 years old, who are usually more receptive to the new sounds, words and grammar of a foreign language. Finally, the very young learners who are often pre ? schoolers aged 7 years and less. They have shorter attention spans but are generally amenable to fun games, singing, drawing etc. Major differences between adult and young learners : 1. Learning experience Adults have had a lot of earlier experience related to teaching, hence might have their own fixed views regarding it, whilst the young learner have hardly had any such prior experience, hence ar equite flexible to new teaching methods. 2. Motivation levels Adult learners who have made their own decision to attend classes will usually be quite motivated. However, young learners who have rarely made that decision for themselves may lack in motivation. 3. Nervousness Adults are more nervous about a new learning experience than younger learners. 4. Language awareness Since adults have already reached an age where their language basics are set, they find it difficult to learn a new language in its own set of grammatical rules and regulations. This, many times leads to hesitancy in learning and usage too whereas young learners are quicker in learning these basics as they are yet in a learning stage and hence can adapt themselves to the new context and usage of grammatical rules and regulations. They learn the new language as they are learning their own language, and hence do not have any hesitancy in its usage as well. 5. Behaviour problem Adults are more well behaved and disciplined than their younger counterparts hence need less attention regarding this problem. They are more devoted to learning the language than in other things which distract young minds. 6. Life experience Adult shave more life experience to share which can make the lessons more interesting. Various levels of language ability that learners are often grouped into are: 1. Beginners : They have very basic knowledge of English which has to be activated. 2. Elementary: Students are able to form basic sentences and communicate on simple topics. 3. Pre-intermediate: Students are able to communicate and understand but still lacking fluency and depth of language awareness. 4. Upper Intermediate: Still lacking in accuracy and fluency though able to communicate and express ideas properly. 5. Advanced: At this stage the students have a very good knowledge of the English language and can now move on to learn more detailed sections. CONCLUSION An enthusiastic, sensitive, motivated and caring teacher is much more likely to have successful students who enjoy their learning and continue attending classes. ", I have learnt many things from this unit about Teachers and Students. these are some basic things which i never know so i got many things to learn. i have learnt about different levels and behaviour of students.it was very useful for me.

Success of an English language classroom is based on the relationship of the teacher and student. The teacher should be aware of their student's level of learning, and take on the principles of a "good teacher"" in order to actively engage the students and keep them motivated and comfortable enough to communicate and wanting to return to class" This unit talks about teachers and learners and their qualities. Teacher must have good personality and develop good communication with learners. He can use 9 different models of teaching English. Depending on students' level and different circumstances teacher use one model more that another. Students must have desire to learn new material and use it during the lesson. The greatest takeaway of this unit was the importance of the relationship between teacher and student. This was reinforced throughout the unit. It also describes the different roles a teacher can play and the different levels a student can be. This lesson was very good to me because I could notice some different aspects when dealing with young learners and adults. And, of course, the qualities we must always remember and practice when teaching English.

Unit 1 focused on the various stages of a students learning process, and the various ways a teacher should interact with his/her student at each stage. The unit also emphasized the teachers willingness to teach and how they can improve their students learning ability by their own enthusiasm . One of the most important sections of this unit was the description of students at various levels of their learning process. This section was important to me because it emphasized the notion of the relationship between the student and the teacher. It helps give the teacher a better view of what to expect and how to interact with each student at these levels.

In this unit I learned the qualities of a good teacher and a good learner. These qualities are necessary in the best interest of both parties. The teacher needs the qualities in order to keep the student on track. A good student is necessary so that a teacher know how best to help him or her and so they can learn the language. I also learned the levels at which students are usually placed which allows the teacher to use the best resources to help the students succeed.

I have an experience with different levels except only for the advanced. Actually, as I was reading the content it made me more realized that teaching is very crucial. In just few days, it taught me how to improve my profession in terms of teaching. Understanding more of the role of the teacher and the characteristics of a good learner encouraged me to strive or aim high and not settle for less. I am so excited to learn more about teaching English, it is not really about the certificate but the knowledge that I will be receiving from this training that fascinates me.

I have learnt that a sensitive, motivated and enthusiastic approach to teaching is the most effective. It is important to remain culturally aware when addressing students, structuring lessons and devising activities. Teachers take on different roles and it is important to know when to take on a particular role and why. Adult and young learners require different activities and learning approaches. Although adults may be more motivated learners they may not be as open minded as young learners. There are different levels of language knowledge but this framework may differ in other countries and teachers may prefer teaching different levels. A teacher's job is to motivate, this can be achieved through correct support and creating an open and non-judgmental environment.

I learned about the different roles that teachers take on and how in one classroom setting a teacher can act as 5 different things as they deal with individual students and parts of a lesson. This unit discusses types of teachers and types of students. It focuses on the different roles a teacher must perform in order to be effective. The types of students are separated into adults and young learners, and an example of how they perform at different levels is given. Teachers and students have different roles in the classroom. Both the teacher and the students are responsible for the learning in the classroom. Teachers must be observant and aware but also willing to control and manage. Students must act in a professional manner to get the most out of the lesson.

It helped me improved my skills in teaching. As for learning to identify the different kinds of learners thankyou

This unit attempted to define what makes a good teacher, and what makes a good student. It also helped make sense of the wide pool of ESL students by dividing them into groups, by age and language proficiency. This unit attempted to define what makes a good teacher, and what makes a good student, by listing commonly cited qualities of each. It also helped make sense of the wide pool of ESL students by dividing them into groups, by age and language proficiency. It also listed some reasons why people pursue ESL in the first place. I think this unit made a clear point on the requirements as a teacher in a non-English speaking country. I like the clear description given on the levels and how to identify them. I will try to become a very good teacher that always listens and cares for his students.

Overall, this unit showed that a successful ESL teacher must recognize that a variety of qualities, roles, and methods must be taken on, not only by themselves, but by the students as well. Above all, a good teacher must be invested and interested in their students' successes; likewise, ESL students must have motivation for learning the language. In addition, teachers must be aware of their own students' abilities and adapt their lessons' content, structure, and delivery to suit the many various levels that exist in any classroom. The most interesting and valuable part of this unit for me was the breakdown of the various roles that an ESL teacher must play in the classroom and how an imbalance between them (such as being a "manager"" or ""participant"" too often) can negatively affect how well the students absorb the material."

This unit covers the characteristics of good teachers and learners, as well as the standard classification of students' English level. The main thing I learned is that a good ESL teacher is positive, kind, patient, knowledgable, knows the proper time to correct the students and gives Plenty of class time for students to pracice what they have learned. I have found that much of what was covered in this unit I have learned through personal experience, for example, what makes a good learner and the general classification of students' English level. So I found this unit very practical. Thank you.

In this unit, I learned many of the different roles that a teacher plays. For example, one of the teacher?s main roles is to manage the class by deciding when lecture is more appropriate and when discussion is more appropriate. A teacher must also act as an assessor. This role is crucial because if a teacher does not assess and correct a student as he?s learning, he will continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. When a teacher acts as a prompter instead of spoon-feeding the answer to the student, the teacher allows the student to come up with the answer on his own and make sure he fully understands the content. It is important for teachers to sometimes withdraw completely from activities while still being readily available as a resource to answer questions for students who seek help. While a teacher must embody all of these roles, he must also continuously act as a model for the students. A teacher can explain everything correctly to them, but the students will still pick up on a teacher's bad habits (e.g. using ?good? as an adverb). In this unit, I also learned some of the characteristics of a good teacher. One characteristic is kindness/patience: if a teacher gets frustrated when the students don?t understand something, they will be afraid to ask questions and try new things. A good teacher should also be lively/entertaining - especially with a younger crowd. This is important for getting and maintaining students' attention. A good teacher is able to motivate leaners, allowing students to get the most of out the class whether they are young students who don?t want to be there or adults who have plateaued and need motivation. Good subject knowledge is another characteristic of a good teacher. No matter how much someone loves teaching, he can only teach as much as he knows himself. I believe that the most important characteristic of a teacher is the ability to correct students without offending them. This is the most important quality because a teacher can?t be afraid to correct a student or he won?t improve, but at the same time, the correction needs to be encouraging and constructive so that the student will not be afraid to try again. In addition to learning the qualities of a good teacher, I also learned the qualities of a good learner. A good learner must be willing to listen to the language. A student can memorize every rule of a language, but it is not the same as hearing the language be spoken. A good learner also must have the desire to experiment with the language. The new language that the student is learning may have differences from his native language (e.g. intonation, enchainment), so experimentation is necessary. Additionally, a good learner must be willing to ask questions. Some things that may seem obvious to teachers may not be obvious to students, so students must feel comfortable asking questions when they arise. It is important for a good learner to be able to accept error correction. Errors (e.g. pronunciation) when learning a new language are inevitable, so a student must realize that the corrections are constructive and accept them without getting defensive. A good learner must have a desire to learn. Even naturally-smart students will not be able to reach their full potential unless they have a desire to learn. There may be a large range in the learners' ages, and this presents learning-related differences. For example, adult learners take the class on their own free-will and, consequently, may be more motivated than younger learners who are being required to take it for whatever reason. Adult learners also tend to be more nervous than younger students, who are more concerned with how fun the game is that they are playing. Adults are more likely to compare the skill level of the new language they are learning to that of their native language, which can be problematic. Younger learners, on the other hand, have a shorter attention span than adults and tend to present more behavior problems. Adult learners have more life experience than younger students, which can help the teacher connect more easily with them.", This unit is designed by clear topics with comprehensible contents that help me to fluently move to next subject. Also it directs me which unit will precisely teach about the matter. I watched video lesson and it was good opportunity to see

This unit focused on the traits and roles of a good teacher, as well as the traits and explanations of the different learning levels of students. Teachers must have a positive personality and a love for teaching with patience. But more importantly, teachers must interact well with the students through providing motivation, offering error correction, and monitor each student. The most important role of the teacher in my opinion is to care about their students well-being.

This unit discussed Teachers and Learners. The qualities of good teachers and learners were listed, as well as the roles that a teacher may take and the differences among learners. The best outcome for a class would be when there is a teacher who loves to teach and learners who want to learn. After reading this unit, I feel that the teacher's most important role/quality is to encourage and assist the learner to discover the language. This is a good unit to categorize different roles for teachers and different levels of learners. It's definitely a very well detailed unit to start with. As a teacher it's very easy to focus on teaching or monitoring and neglect other roles. I have learned something new and fresh in this unit. I have learned that a good teacher has several qualities and should use these qualities to deliver in a way to help students learn. Teacher has several roles to play a different roles to play and need to know when each is necessary. Different age range of students will require different teaching material. to teaching the more our students will succeed. A 'good' teacher is more likely to have 'good' students."

This unit outlines the individuals in the classroom and the roles they play. This is a very simplified look at what to expect out of teachers, learners, and levels of education. I am currently an ESL teacher in South Korea. I have been teaching for 2 years. However, I feel that I can always improve my teaching methods, which is why I enrolled in this course. For the first time in my teaching career, I was given a class of young students who didn't even know their ABC's. I didn't know what to do. Just from reading the material in Unit 1, I was able to realize that I need to change my teaching method for this class to suit their needs and not discourage them from learning English Before they even know the alphabet.

In order to be a good teacher, you need to assess yourself in order to understand your strong and weak points. From there you would be able to establish which areas need more work and development and would also strengthen your position in the classroom with your students. As part of being a good teacher, you have to understand your learners and therefore have the ability to switch roles in the classroom to suite the situation i.e. being a manager, tutor, participant, model, etc. In order to achieve this, you would also have to assess the motivation, experience and behaviors of your students in order to ensure that you are teaching at the same level as the students' level of understanding.

I believe that the most important thing I have learned from this unit is the differences between adult and young learners. Often, it can be difficult to isolate or indicate the differences in learning styles, but I think the ones between young learners and adults are extremely vital to comprehend, especially when planning to become a teacher. Additionally, learning about the different in levels of language learners is very practical - I, myself, have had trouble determining what level I am when learning second and third languages, and therefore found this extremely useful.

This lesson was a great way to build a basic foundation for what it means to teach. It gives the learner an idea of what is expected of them as a teacher and what should be expected of their students. Without knowing the basic levels of learners and the way that they function one could easily go overboard on the level of material or be too easy on the class, both resulting in an inability to learn. This was a perfect way to start the course and introduce the way that bot teachers and students must work in the classroom. I have personally learned so much about how to approach students in the learning process, as well as how to best fit their needs as students.

In this Unit the qualities of a teacher were made very clear. Patience, kindness, a love of teaching, and knowledge are all essential for a good teacher. The roles of a teacher may vary depending on the students and classroom situations. Each role is important for the success of the students. Also the qualities of a good learner were discussed, among them the willingness to learn, receive correction, ask questions and experiment. young learners have the opportunity to take a fresh look on learning a new language while adults have a challenge of comparing past education and current knowledge of their native language to the new language. The levels of each student may vary and must be taken into consideration. I feel that I have learned a lot about the roles a teacher must play in the classroom and on a personal level with each student. Also I was better able to understand the reasons why adults are more challenged when it comes to learning another language as opposed to young learners. I feel more prepared to judge a students level of ability after completing this unit.

As someone who will be teaching kindergarten children, I especially benefited from the section describing the qualities of a good teacher. In my opinion, very young children are drawn first to the teacher as a person Before they develop any interest in the subject that the teacher is teaching. So, a teacher who is lively, patient and kind, well organized, etc. can help children then develop an interest in the subject matter.

A "good teacher"" is one that takes into consideration the needs of the students. Teachers should possess key qualities that include I found this unit very helpful. As I already have experience teaching ELL students, it was useful to be able to finally put the official jargon to a lot of the strategies I was coached to use. Being able to correctly and easily 'level' my learners will be extremely helpful in developing lesson plans in a differentiated classroom. This unit discussed what makes a good teacher and a good learner, and how to create an environment that allows for both to develop. There are some inherent behavior qualities in both good teachers and good learners, but there are also learned behaviors that can make a better learning environment. Rather than stating "do A to achieve result B"

Unit 1 ? Teachers and Learners The first section of this course acts as an overview and a basic explanation of what we qualities we should display as teachers and what should hope to expect from our students. It outlines the positive qualities all teachers need to bring to the classroom ? both in our personality (for instance, being kind, passionate and entertaining) and our approach (encouraging interaction, maintaining a rapport, etc.). It categorizes the roles that we need to play as head of the class, be they heavily active, as in a manager or tutor, or more passive as in when we are monitors or assessors. More importantly it emphasizes the need to be able to change and balance these different roles. It also lays our the qualities of different learners, specifically adults versus younger learners and the subdivisions of the latter group. Adults will likely be more motivated, but less open-minded and less active than younger learners. However, they will also bring more experience and a longer attention span to their classes. Finally this chapter attempts to break the levels of learners into different categories. These categories are perhaps a little more useful in determining which classes to put a student in or which textbook to purchase, but I feel, as with all attempts to categorize things as subjective as language process, that they are best seen as a framework or a generality than a hard and fast rule and why this is the first unit and not the last one. ", This unit dealt with the almost rhetoric question - what makes a good teacher. It is rhetoric because the answer is not a simple one. The teacher's role encompasses various facets and thus is a little difficult to summarize. In short

There are many approaches to teaching, and the teacher should try to integrate more than one to their lessons in order to encourage and motivated the students. Also, there are many different Types of students, and age/culture/level can affect the attitude of the student towards learning. I feel as though this lesson was a really good start to the course as a whole. It gave a good basis of which qualities make up a good teacher, the different roles of the teacher, different types of learners, and what each kind of learner will bring to the table. I found it especially important to learn about the different roles of the teacher because I did not realize how fluidly these roles could change even from sentence to sentence. The video definitely helped to clear up my understanding of the different roles. I also found it interesting to learn about the different types of learners and what young learners vs. adults would bring to the classroom. It gave me some insight into what to consider when thinking about which age group would be ideal for me.

The section that struck me the most was the various roles a teacher must take on during a course. Whether it be as moderator or controller, organizer, participant, assessor, prompter, resource, tutor, or observer, the teacher's role can be fluid and change depending on the activity. I'm looking forward to Unit 5 which will hopefully give me a better understanding of when to employ which role.

Unit one was very informative to me since it gave me a good idea as to why many students take English as a second language. Not only did it give examples as to why students take English but it also gave examples and details on the types of students, their level of English, how focused different age groups are and their willingness to learn. Aside from the students and their motivation and reasoning for taking the class, it described in detail how to be a good teacher and gave examples of the different types of teachers, such as participant, tutor and model, just as examples. I also found it quite interesting how different cultures learn. I attended high school first hand in the Usa as well as in france and the system I encountered in Europe was much different compared to the system used here in the USA. This is just a personal example in response to the Latin America vs asian ways of learning and teaching as discussed in this chapter.

The first unit describes the importance of understanding the necessary components of a healthy teacher-learner relationship for developing a successful classroom. I learned the importance of not just working to be a better teacher but also the effort needed in understanding the needs, levels, and expectations for learners. I am reminded of the important framework that needs to used when approaching teaching in a holistic sense.

This unit explained the roles of teachers and students and how they should interact with each other to be most successful. It began by describing the qualities of a good teacher: being kind and patient, knowing their content, having a good rapport with the class, and so on. The most important quality is ensuring that the teacher has the success of the students in mind, not their own success. The unit then goes to explain the various roles of a teacher: manager, organizer, prompter, facilitator, assessor, tutor, and participant. Each role is appropriate at a different time and it's important for a teacher to know when to adopt each role, to ensure that students are learning effectively. THe unit then described the students - ages, motivational points, and language level. Good students, overall, have a desire and a drive to learn English. They attend to activities and discussions because they want to learn, for whatever reason is closest to them. The age of learners is important to consider because different aged students have different learning styles, different interests, and different life experiences and a teacher will need to tap into those to decipher what his or her student needs. The unit also discussed different areas of difficulty in students, such as nervousness, motivation, differences in culture, behavior problems, and language level. Language level is broken down into six different levels from Pre-Elementary to Advanced, with different criteria in each level. We were also shown the 6 level breakdown of a common English program, levels A1-C2. In the end, to be good students, learners often need good teachers. The two are a cohesive pair and for a student to learn to the best of his or her ability, it is a teacher's job to try, through whatever means possible, to motivate and provide a positive learning environment for the student.

I particularly enjoyed reading about the Council of Europe and the 6 levels of learning.

It just seemed to come so natural to me. This was a great refresher for things that I Haven't given much thought to lately such as gerunds, articles and prepositions. I enjoyed it.

An excellent review of things native speakers should know. We are quite familiar with how to use the language but Haven't the slightest idea how to explain it. Grammar has always been a point of confusion and this clearly outlines various parts of speech and how/where/when to use them. Most helpful This unit is very helpfull, it reminds the future teachers the names of the parts of speech. It shows us some of the aspects which we can sometimes forget. It is brif overview of the most importaint part of the grammar - basis. Every other knowledges would base on it. This unit is a brief review of the nature and use of grammatical components that must be understood in order to diagram a sentence and explain to students the reasoning behind its structure.

Although I was already familiar with the main parts of speech, ( noun, verb, adverb, adjective, ect.) I learned a lot about the other categories (personal pronouns, comparative adjectives, ect.) I also realized that English is probably a much more complicated language to learn then any of the foreign languages I have studied. The large number of irregular verbs particularly impressed me, as well as the difficulty in using articles correctly.

This unit dealt with the many parts of English speech. It not only explained what each of the parts of speech does in a sentence, but also elucidated upon the relationship each part has with the others. (For example, how adverbs can be used to modify both verbs and adjectives, how auxiliary verbs affect other verbs in the sentence, and how possessive adjectives modify nouns.) This unit was especially helpful in explaining the different kinds of adverbs (manner, place, frequency, etc) and prepositions (those showing location, movement, etc).

This unit teaches some basic things about English grammar. It covers the parts of a sentence, such as: nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions. The reading of this unit helped me refresh my understanding about the parts of a speech. When we speak the language the words comes naturally without thinking about all the structures and rules that are used. All these little details is a challenge to teach, since it can be confusing for the students at first, especially, with all its rules and exceptions.

This unit contained a very thorough explanation of the parts of speech in English. I learned how much information on that subject I had forgotten.Countable and uncountable nouns was completely new to me and so was the discussion of the different pronouns. At this point I feel I would be hard-pressed to explain all this to a class of speakers of other languages but I hope that as I progress through the units I will absorb the information and become more confident.

This unit was rather interesting! I learnt the break down of my everyday speech in grammatical terms. Basically grammar is all about distinguishing a pattern in the English language but there is not always a set pattern as some words might differ. I learnt to break down words in a sentence into its respective grammatical term. I had to read this chapter/unit several times. I don't think I understand all of it. I will definitely be asking a tutor about breaking down lesson plans. I also plan on getting a few books regarding grammar! If I am having a hard time understanding, how will I teach this to a student? There were many things that I learned throughout this unit. The main concepts I learned are the parts of speech; and the different kinds of nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, adverbs, gerunds, and pronouns, and prepositions/conjunctions there are. I learned that there are many parts of speech in a sentence and that they are identified in different terms.

A lot of this I had no idea what they were called and just used them naturally. I am a little nervous about this section. I've always been a little slow about grammer and forgetful when it comes to the terminology. Despite the struggle I think I learned a lot! As a native English speaker, we often use correct grammar without knowing the exact rules of the language. When teaching, it is important to know why we speak or write in a certain way. Having a good understanding of the basic building blocks of the English language is the best way to teach grammar to students. I've learned that it is very important to teach the basic grammar clearly, otherwise it will all seem much more difficult. Also I think that a teacher must show enthusiasm for the grammar, that is so static itself, and in this way, students can be motivated to learn it properly.

This unit provided basic introductions to the parts of speech, including nouns (countable vs. uncountable, proper, common, abstract), adjectives and how to modify them, adverbs, verbs and conjugation, articles (indefinite vs. definite vs. null), prepositions, and pronouns. This unit also provided general rules for ordering adjectives and adverbs in a sentence. A key point is that there are many exceptions to the rules of conjugation and changing parts of speech, which must be learned through memorization and practice. This can be very challenging for learners.

In this unit they talked about a variety of parts of speech. This was particularly helpful to me because these are parts within the English language that give me a hard time. The verbs and nouns were fairly easy to recall but relearning articles such as a and an, and specific categories within each part of speech was truly helpful.

It was a great refresher and I feel well-equipped to now go and teach grammar to students. However, I will definitely need to keep this unit in my notes so that I can refer to them often as I plan lessons.

The English language is based on various components that are structured in its most basic form as a sentence. Every sentence is made up of a verb and a subject however the more words added to the sentence the more information attained and each word used has a grammatical term that helps us determine this information. For the most part the grammatical structure of a sentence follows a set of rules however there are some irregular examples that have to be learnt by the student.
