As I was going through this lesson, I have realized that as a learner, I have felt the same way concerning learners being embarrassed and hurt by a teachers remarks. I always told myself that if I became a teacher I would never hurt a learner's feelings but instead motivate them. I learned about the characteristics of a great teacher and a great learner, especially how to identify each and capitalize off of those characteristics. Culture, age, motivation, language awareness, behavior and life experience all play an important role in developing the learner, while also making each students progress and development unique, if not difficult sometimes. It is the goal of the teacher to decide which role is best, maybe tutor or participant, in order to bring out the best in that particular student.

I feel I have learned about a variety of teaching roles and student levels throughout this first unit. Some roles provide a greater understanding of how to develop the rapport and interaction between the teacher and the student, while other techniques enable the teacher to remain in control. The unit also demonstrates which role to employ in various activities to determine whether the student has understood the task and what level they've achieved. In addition, this unit has allowed me to gain a wider understanding of the factors which have a bearing on the students' motivation and ability to learn. The relationship between students and teachers is complex, however I know that enthusiasm, sensitivity and motivation will more likely result in successful students and in my role as a teacher.

In the first unit of this course I learned a few things about the basic relationship between teacher and students and what is required from both for success in learning. The focus in the classroom should be on learning as opposed to teaching, in other words the teacher is there to engage the students and to be a resource but also to encourage the students to take responsibility for their learning. I have also learned that there are many different types of learners depending on the learners age, skill level and cultural background. young learners don't often choose to be in an English class where as adult learners are usually there because they want to be and are therefore more motivated. Adult students tend to be more inhibited and can be more nervous than younger ones. Young students may lack the discipline of older students but tend to be more creative and less set in their ways, as they do not have the learning or life experience of adults. The description of the levels of language acquisition help me to understand the progression of ability and better know how to view the abilities of my students.

Throughout this unit on Teachers and Learners, I learned a myriad of teacher roles. First, a teacher as a prompter was one role that I thought was particularly important in this session. Many times teachers automatically do the work for the student instead of allowing the student to think for themselves. I truly believe in a language class, the majority of the students are nervous and having a teacher help prompt students to answer and be part of the class is very important. Also, modeling in the classroom is probably one of the most important components of learning. Reading about the importance of the teacher demonstrating the activity made me realize how important it is for language learning. Overall, all these roles mentioned in this chapter are important and should be used at appropriate times.

After attending a german language class, I see our teacher demonstrating a lot of the things described above.It is nice to see that these things are taught. I never thought in depth about the role of a teacher beyond the superficial layer. Teaching not to over correct is awesome. As a new learner to German it's so demoralizing to have someone correct every mistake you speak. Most of the time I find myself and therefore probably others receiving an explanation on how to correct our mistake makes one feel dumb. I do think it's more important for me just to speak and try again if a confused look comes back. Over corrections make learning less fun. Besides it's not to the utmost importance to be 100% correct when speaking a new language.

This unit has revealed to me an aspect of teaching abroad that I didn't consider Before, which is that the teacher must be aware of and sensitive to the culture and customs of whichever country he/she is teaching in. The unit described the qualities of good teachers and good learners. Having been both myself I found the descriptions detailed and accurate. Good teachers should be concerned about the learners more than themselves, I think this is the most important quality in my opinion. When preparing to teach English as a language, it is important to understand your own motivation and wilingness to teach, as well as be able to assess the students you will work with during your teaching time. In addition, the lesson described the various roles a teacher must be comfortable possessing while in the classroom setting. A teacher who is motivated for the wrong reasons, for instance making lots of money, instead of being rewarded by seeing improvement in the students is not likely to engage and maintain students who will be successful. In just a few words I would say it pfovides the teacher with some fundamental classroom information. Initially, the unit provided a list of qualities a teacher should have as well as the kind of relationship a teacher should have with her students. If a person does not have the personality to teach and cannot establish a relationship with her students, she should not teach as her students will not learn as much as they could. The different roles a teacher should have in the classroom helped me identify my roles when I teach. For example, how it is fundamental to be clear in the classroom, but how it is the students who need to learn the language and my role as a teacher is to help my students learn while focusig on their needs and helping them when they are in difficulty (without correcting them constantly) and so on. I teach many children, but the classification provided was very useful as it explained my feelings. In particular with teenagers who are usually unmotivated and seem to lack creativity because they are afraid to express themselves. On the other hand, as the unit highlighted, younger children tend to learn more quickly even iif their concentration span is shorter. The section on motivation,nervousness... was very interesting as I just thought it was typical of Italians to translate everything, but I was wrong. Also the part about asian students was completely new as their approach is completely different to my current situation. The explanation of the different levels of English which was then classified into a framework was helpful. The part about what makes a good learner helped me especially on one point: their ability to think about thheir own learning process and method. Anyhow, I could go on and on, but I will stop now and just add how I my aim is to be a better teacher so that I can have students that learn much faster and enjoy the process.

This lesson served as a refresher of the variety of learners one can encounter. Having taught elementary students Before and now teaching high school students, it's a great difference, but I have experienced what different challenges and opportunities each age group brings. I think having experience with a variety of ages helps us grow as a teacher and how to better serve our students. Also, one often forgets of how many roles we take on as a teacher through-out the lesson. With that said, I think it's important to be mindful of the roles we do take in the classroom and learn how to evenly utilize each one through-out the class time.

I learned that you need to use all the above tools equally and at the right times to become a good teacher. In this unit I dove deeply in the English grammar, and to my surprise, most of the things I learned, or better, most of the grammatical rules I learned have been part of my natural speech for a very long time. What I did not possess was a technical knowledge that allowed me to organize my thinking and therefore to make my teaching much more specific and developed. As a native speaker, the rules of the language are a part of you, there is rarely a need to second guess yourself. This unit took you to the foundation of speaking English. It broke down the different parts of a sentence and demonstrated how and why each word fits. Once you know the simple sentence structure, you can make a sentence. I really appreciated the section on adjectives. Now I understand why using adjectives in a certain sequence is natural and to change it sounds wrong.

I have learned a great deal from this unit. I found this unit very hard as I have not looked closely at parts of speech since I was at school myself. I spent the whole day reading over and rewriting the notes in order to prepare myself for the test. I found this essential as this will be a big part of what I do when I go to teach in asia. This section covers the parts of speech. It encompasses everything from nouns to past participles and instructs how they may be employed. It provides many examples in every category and it really helped to discern which word fit which particular definition. The most interesting part for me was the order of words in the sentence. I have always felt that English was a versatile language and could be assembled in a variety of orders to express the same or similar ideas, but it is interesting to see that there is a suggested order much the way there is in Mandarin chinese.

In unit two, I have learn about the importance of teaching grammar. In order for students to fully understand English, part of speech play a very important role. It makes it easier for students to understand the language because it splits the whole sentence into parts and it explains why each word are in its place. In my opinion, grammar makes learning English easier and better explain the meaning behind the placement of each word.

The content of the second unit covers the basic rules of the parts of speech, starting from the root of the simple sentence and how it's built and continuing to explain each part of the sentence and the role it has in the sentence. It is important to be able to recognize the parts of speech in a sentence, in order to express yourself in a fluent and correct manner. I think the parts of speech are important also because they show us how the words relate to each other and it helps us to understand the sentence.

This section explained the parts of speech, which are the basic units of grammar used to form the English language. It broke down sentences to show how each part of speech affects the other words within a sentence. I felt it the examples within the unit were very helpful in explaining each part of speech. Also, the overview of each part of speech helped me understand more about basic English grammar as many times these topics are not explicitly taught in school.

This is a hard unit because there are so many rules to remember. It was a great way to refresh my memory and remind myself of the different parts of speech. It also made me realise how difficult it is for students to learn our English language. The teacher needs to keep this in mind when planning lessons and teaching parts of speech.

This unit was pretty tough. As stated in the introduction, as a native English speaker I consider myself to be quite the capable speaker. Explaining why sentences should be worded and structured in certain ways are what I have difficulty with. Much of what I learned in this unit was learned many years ago in elementary and middle school. Back then I made my best effort to not pay attention. Now, as I'm trying to absorb every possible bit of information it's all starting to come back to me. The one thing I didn't remember learning about is what a "gerund"" is. I have to read the section a few times. I had to go online and read more. I even had to watch a few videos. I then went back and read some more and finally started to understand. For whatever reason I just wasn't getting it. I think sometimes you just have to keep at it until you really get it. That's the strategy I used to finally understand math."
