The qualities of a good teacher provide a clear goal for qualities for me to develop in my own personality. I particularly valued the examination of the various roles a teacher can have in the classroom, as I feel that this has broadened my understanding and expectation of what I can be expected to fulfill as a teacher. I feel that the list of qualities a good learner needs were fairly obvious, but feel that it is necessary to include them for the sake of completeness. I also valued the comparison of students of various ages (young and old) and of various language levels. I believe that if the age, language level and culture of one's prospective student's is known, it would be possible to develop a clear profile of the students using the information provided. This would be valuable in helping me to prepare lessons and curricula for those students.

In general this was a very detailed and informative unit. I learned the different learning motivations, the difference between young learners and adult learners and I also had an opportunity to think about something that I did not think about prior to engaging in the course and that is what level would I'd rather teach or feel more comfortable teaching. I've learnt that the teacher has to closely pay attention to the class and the students in order to correctly choose which role to take on at any given time. In some classes it may be necessary for the teacher to play all roles at different times with different students. Some highly motivated students may only need the teacher to be an assessor, and some slower learning students may need the teacher to be a tutor, model and a monitor. Knowing your students and their different ability levels is in my opinion, the most important ability for a teacher to have.

In this unit, we discussed what makes a good teacher. Some important features of a good teacher are a teacher that is patient and kind, lively, motivational and able to correct students without offending them. We also talked about the different roles a teacher plays. It is important for a teacher to learn to balance the different roles. When discussing learners, we learned that there are differences in adult learners and young learners. For example, we could say that in general, adult learners may be more inhibited than young learners. Adult learners, on the other hand, may be more motivated than young learners because they have chosen to study English themselves for various reasons. We also discussed the different levels of learners and skills each level have usually acquired.

I really enjoyed this lesson because I am able to see how my learning of the spanish language has been effected by my own style of learning and past instructors, who either helped facilitate my learning or solely managed my learning. I do feel management is more important at basic stages, but facilitation, assessing/monitoring, and motivation seem to be key to teaching language. This unit talked about various types of teaching styles and listed some of the characteristics of a good teacher and a good student. It also went into the different levels of a students laungage skills. One of the things I took away from this unit was that going in I thought that it would be way better to teach the finer skills of english to a student with a high laungage skill but after finishing this unit I think it would be much more rewarding to teach a student with a lower level and be able to see the improvements. That is something I will have to think about more going forward.

This unit opened my eyes to the basics of learning and teaching. Coming from a non-teaching background, this information is incredibly useful to apply to different types of classrooms. I have learned how to not only be a good teacher, but to be a part of the classroom and relate to the students on a learning level. A good teacher will always motivate his/her students and be respectful while employing a variety of teaching styles, while a good student will desire to learn and be willing to ask questions. This unit discussed good teachers and good students. Several ways in which to be a good teacher were listed, as were the various roles a teachers needs to take in a successful classroom. Also discussed were the keys to being a good learner and ways to encourage these traits, a brief overview of the different levels of learners, the differences between working with adults and younger students, the importance of understanding the culture you are teaching in and the motivations behind someone choosing to learn English. My takeaway from this unit is to remember to incorporate many different teaching roles into a lesson and to learn to move between them with confidence. There are roles I may be stronger in, but I will need to work on the roles I feel less confident in so that I can be a well-rounded teacher who motivates my students. Also, meeting every student at his or her level is important, as is understanding the challenges each age range and proficiency level will have. The unit reaffirmed that a teacher requires many skills and abilities to be an effective teacher of English. I think the key is to quickly gain an understanding of your students knowledge of the english language. When you are able to understand the level of the student, the teacher can then teach at an appropriate level and provide practice at a level to challenge the student, but not set them up to fail or become discouraged about their ability to learn. I think this unit has confirmed that it is often difficult to work across multiple level of english capability and provide practice material at the correct level.

This unit gave a nice overview of what it takes to be a good teacher and also what makes a good student. For teachers, it's important to keep a good balance functioning within all the different roles as manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource, model and observer. To help with that challenge, it's important to focus on some of the qualities that make a good teacher, namely: kind, patient, love of teaching, lively, motivator, knowledgeable, good rapport, and to be very keen when correcting students so as not to offend or diminish motivation. For students, they need to have a desire to learn and a willingness to participate.

This unit taught the basics of grammar that included information about nouns, adjectives, verbs, articles, adverbs, and gerunds. Some of the course was a refresher, however I also learned a lot of the challenges that English can bring to learners. There are many exceptions to this language, so I think that becoming familiar with common exceptions will help make it easier for students to learn. It also makes me aware that not many native English users know these rules.

I love grammar. This basic overview should be helpful for those who don't. I like to start teaching with verb conjugation, because if the students can't do that right, they will never speak proper English. I had an English teacher friend here in Chile, una Chileana, tell me this: yesterday I go to the store. Well, sorry but no sale! There are only a few conjugations for the English verbs, as compared to around 70 for the spanish, so let's just go ahead and learn them. Then we can speak confidently, and move onto vocabulary and pronunciation. Thank you!!

Throughout this unit we have learnt about the most basic grammar units: the parts of speech and their use in a sentence. We have also reflected on the typology of the parts of speech. For instance the countable and uncountable nouns, the comparative and superlative adjectives, the definite and indefinite articles, the transitive and intransitive verbs, the different verb forms, the adverbs of manner, place, time, degree and frequency; gerunds and how they can act as a subject or as an object of the sentence, the types of pronouns: personal, possessive, reflexive and relative; the prepositions of time, movement and Date; and conjunctions. We have also seen the adjective order in a sentence (size, age, color, material + noun) as well as the adverb order in a sentence (place, manner, time).

Grammar is a set or rules that explain how words are used in a language. In order for me to teach the English language, I must know these grammar rules well enough to instruct others. I can see the challenge of explaining all the many grammatical exceptions and irregularities to ESL students. Depending on their language ability, I may have to take a much slower approach to teaching these rules to ESL students. There was a lot of material in this one unit to review and grasp.

This unit we learned about grammar. The definition of different words and how to use them. We learned about the different types of verbs, the classifications of nouns, what gerunds and articles are. I learned a lot because I have never really studied grammar carefully so there were many definitions and examples that I have noted down. I believe it will be very useful in the future when my students are confused by certain sentence structures.

Unit 2 really was tough actually. I had to refresh my memory from what I've learned since elementary school. Even native English speaking people have problems with grammar. This unit helped me distinguish the different types of nouns such as compound, abstract, and collective. I use it everyday but never really knew that were many types of nouns. This unit also gave more understanding of nouns, verbs, adverbs, articles, adjectives, and many more. I really emjoyed this unit even though it was kind of difficult at first.

English is my first language so I do not pay much attention to grammar, it flows naturally to me. There are so many different rules when it comes to adjectives, such as the 2 syllable rule for comparative adjectives.

Parts of Speech The simplest form of structure is the basic sentence. A sentence must consist of at least a subject and verb but will usually feature more words than this. Each word in a sentence can be further classified, according to its purpose and the meaning it adds, this is what we refer to as parts of speech. 1.Nouns: A nous names people animals places things qualities states?etc. Types of noun: -common: person doctor hospital cat -proper: Jack, Julie, france-compound: bookcase, post office -abstract: strength, beauty, happiness -collective: family herd -Plural: indicate more than one. Grammar is one of the toughest thing, in my opinion, to teach in an English language class. A breakdown of the English language is a necessity in understanding the English language and to have proper speaking and writing knowledge of the language. A continuous review and practice is much needed and many forms of practices for students (and even teachers) would be necessary to ensure comprehension.
