During this unit the information that stuck out the most to me was about the language levels and how they are different from one another. I have learned that progress is seen much easier in lower-level students and that teachers need to keep motivation up in higher-level students because they may feel as though they have reached a plateau.

Therefore it is important that the teacher needs to ensure the learner is on the right track, not out of context. A teacher needs to be able to grade students correctly so that the learners know what level they are at and what he or she can do to enhance their skills. This Unit gave me the basic fundamentals of how to teach and what would be required of a teacher given they are put in different situations all the time. It also taught me what the impact of age and level of language will have on the students and their ability to learn. It also taught me where to start when walking into a class not knowing how they will respond or how to treat them and handle situations with the right teaching role when to take a controlling roll and when to let the class work on their own.

This unit focused on qualities that teachers and learners should have. I learned that a good teacher should be patient, entertaining, have deep knowledge of a subject he is teaching, should make all students participate in the lesson, etc. On the other hand, good learner should be excited about the language, should not be afraid to ask questions, willing to learn new things, actively participate in the class... This unit focused on the basics of teaching ESL. Then it considered the wide variety of students that a teacher can encounter in terms of age, culture and ability. Some time was spent examining how students' level of language ability can be ranked, and thinking about what motivates language learners. It was interesting to learn about the many different roles that a teacher has. I work in junior high schools, but I had never really thought about the many hats I wear during a class, and how I decide when to switch from one mode to the next. It was also useful to think about what motivates students to learn a foreign language. I see how this knowledge can inform how a teacher plans their lessons.

This unit basically focused on the main players in the classroom and the roles they typically have, as well as the factors that shape their behavior and motivation. Although I do have almost 17 years of teaching experience, this unit contributed to raising my awareness of some major roles teachers play within the context of an EFL class(room) and provided some excellent examples of what each role might include. I also learned about some important behavioral and motivational aspects of young learners (in my career so far, I've been mainly involved in teaching young adults--18+ university students and adults). This unit made me reflect more upon some aspects of teacher behavior (some roles) that I might have neglected so far in my career as a teacher--for example, I do tend to emphasize the Manager/Controller/Organizer/Prompter/Assessor roles, but often kind of forget about the importance of the Model/Facilitator/Tutor roles. Knowing when to take center stage and when to withdraw and let your students "shine"" is crucial for boosting their motivation and self-confidence. I learned that a teacher has many jobs in the classroom and has to be able to switch between roles in accordance to a class or current lesson. A teacher should not always be any one of the roles, but should be able to switch between roles fluidly to give students a rounded education. I also learned several differences between an adult and child learner, I learned that adults may be more motivated to learn, but also may at times be more difficult as they are engrained in past experiences (good or bad) and want to translate the language. Students absorb a second language more like they would their mother tongue with means it may be easier for them to learn new concepts, but at the same time may be less motivated to learn and be difficult to teach for a different reason. Each student Type has it's own advantage and difficulty and a teacher needs to be able to acknowledge these learning barriers and break them them proper role assessment.

I think this was a great start to the course. I want to know what is expected of me as a teacher. All the examples of being a good teacher were important but the most important to me were that I should be kind, patient, and concentrate on the education of the student. It is important for teachers to continually evaluate his/her classroom. There are times when the teacher will need to take on different roles, and thus it is imperative that the teacher understands the needs of his students. At times the class may be teacher-centered, but it is important that the majority of class be student-centered. I believe that students should be given more freedom within the classroom to explore their particular interests, as well as move at their own pace. I agree that teaching lower level English students can be very fun but limiting at the same time. I currently teach elementary school students, and I find that my biggest problem is simplifying my English (Speed, vocabulary, etc.) so that my students can understand me. All of my students are required to study English at school, so they are not always very motivated. However, I hope that when they move on to junior high school they will have a positive outlook on English classes.

In this unit, I have learned that there are many rules to the parts of speech that native English speakers don't necessarily formally learn. For example, with countable and uncountable nouns, one uses "many"" to describe countable nouns (I have many cats) and one uses ""much"" to describe uncountable nouns (She doesn't have much money). Also The section allowed me to reflect on the basics behind the english language and its sentences. It allows me to understand the basics behind the different components their are in a sentence. It came more as a refresher to me as it was previous knowledge i hadn't reviewed in awhile. As a native speaker, you take advantage of your native language and forget the technical details. This unit makes you appreciate what you know even though you really don't know. This lesson also helped me personally with learning a foreign language, especially with transitive and intransitive verbs.

Every time I review grammar details, such as, adverbs, pronouns, etc. I am alway reminded of the difficult time I had gone through myself trying to understand my mother tongue. In Unit 2, I learned a lot about how the levels and forms of grammar in the English. This unit really focused on how to properly begin to construct sentences (starting off with a subject and a verb), also with the inclusion of an object. It breaches more in depth on the meaning of each part of a sentence like nouns, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, prepositions and how effective they are when correctly used in forming sentences. This was definitely a refresher course for me as I Haven't taken an English course since my Freshmen year of College and even then, the content never went this in depth. This unit breaks down the structure of a sentence and explains all parts of speech in great length. Everything from nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, gerunds, articles, and prepositions are covered. I've learned a great deal about basic sentence structure and grammar in this unit, specifically the intricate rules of articles. The contenct of Unit 2 was a good overview of reviewing English grammar. I was a bit confusing with using articles. However, explanation of using articles from the unit was clear and helpful. A teacher should be able to grasp and properly explain the most common areas of grammar to the students. Nouns are used to Name people, places, animals, qualities, and states, and are divided into five main types: 1.) Common nouns, like person or city (which are not capitalized). 2.) Proper nouns, like Jenny or San Francisco (which are capitalized). 3.) Compound nouns are two nouns joined to make a new noun, like Cable car. 4.) Abstract nouns are things we experience as an idea and cannot touch, like freedom. 5.) Collective nouns treat a group of individuals as if they are one, like horde. These are then divided into nouns we can count (countable) and those we can?t (uncountable), like car and wisdom, respectively. There are however nouns that can be both depending on how they are used in the sentence. Adjectives are the words used to describe the nouns, for example pretty (adjective) girl (noun) and may often be used in clusters of two or three like this: She is a funny and pretty, or She is funny, pretty, and smart. While the order in which the adjectives should be placed in a sentence is not absolute, people usually conform to size-age-color-material-noun. This brings us to comparative and superlative adjectives with the former being used when comparing two different people or things (Matt is smarter than John.) while the latter is used when comparing one person or thing to all others (Matt is the smartest person in the world.). Articles are words used with a noun to indicate when we are referring to any member of a group or to a specific member of a group. Articles will usually fall into two types: definitive (the) which indicates a specific member of the group, and the indefinite (a and an) which indicate any member. Verbs are words used to convey different actions and states of being but are all either transitive or intransitive or both at the same time and have four principal forms: The base form (stop), the past simple (stopped), the past participle (stopped) and the present participle (stopping). Transitive verbs are verbs that should be followed directly by an object (Matt reads (verb) books (object) while intransitive verbs cannot be followed directly by an object (Sleep or Speak) and are often used in relation to time. All verbs have a base form; however when preceded by the word ?to? they then become infinitives which refers to the action as a whole. Auxiliary verbs (be, do, and have) also exist to help form a tense or an expression by combining with present or past participles or infinitives of verbs and are used simply to help form a structure. Adverbs are words that are used to add meaning or information to the verb however they may also be used to modify adjectives and other adverbs. There are five main types of adverbs: Manner (quietly), Place (below), Time (soon), degree (very), and Frequency (always), with some other notable types being: Comment/Attitude (surely), Linking (firstly), Viewpoint (morally), Adding/Limiting (also, only). A Gerund is the ?-ing? form of a verb that is used as the subject or object of a sentence and is used the same way as a noun (I like to go swimming). Pronouns are words used as substitutes for more precise nouns of which there are four types: Personal (I, me, and you), Possessive (Mine, yours, his, hers), Reflexive (myself, yourself, and himself) and Relative (who, which, and what). Prepositions are used to show the relationship of a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence to establish a time (at, on, Before), position (in, at, on) or movement (from, to, through). And finally, Conjunctions are words used join words of the same class like nouns (Jack and Jill), Adjectives (Faster and Stronger) or join parts of sentences (I won?t quit until I have a car).

This unit has given more insight on parts of speech compare to my previous knowledge. And it makes me to be more cautious about making sentences and the act of knowing where to place one part of speech or the other. for example transitive verb, which is followed directly by an object. A good review unit of the basic grammar of common language structure we use on daily basis. The whole grammatical system could seem confusing to any one trying to learn English, but the materials in the unit provides a solid foundation for the learners. This unit is about the different parts of speech. We use the different parts of speech all the time and most of the time we don't even think about the proper place of use. We have to be more aware specially when teaching a foreign language.

This lesson explains lots of basic but very important grammar rules in the English language. Some of the rules include pronouns, transitive verbs, adverbs, past participles, adjectives, superlatives, comparatives, conjunctions and so on. I found it very useful reviewing all of these key grammar rules, especially gerunds and prepositions (since there's a whole list of them to memorize). This lesson was surprisingly overwhelming. Though I am familiar with all of the words and parts of speech presented here, I use them without much thought. Also, the thought of explaining all of the irregularities of usage, conjugation, and spelling is daunting indeed. All of the material in this unit is explained clearly and is very accessible. This section was helpful because, although I learned all of this grammar terminology in grade school, as a post-grad it all seems more fuzzy. It was helpful to refresh with the specific names of the parts of speech and the rules to follow.

This unit went over the specific parts of speech within the English Language. I learned that there are a large amounts of parts of speech that native English speakers are not aware of. This is because the language is natural to us and we don't think to how what we are saying is actually broken down and defined. But this helped me to learn and understand those parts of speech.

This unit was an in depth dissection of sentences and how the parts are used. I found this unit helpful to remind me some of the basic rules that I had forgotten. This class I believe will be very helpful to give better explanations to my students when they make mistakes. I learned about different sentence structures pronouns and adjectives. This unit was difficult for me but I am grateful. I have almost lost face on a handful of questions because outside of class my students will approach me with a grammar question from their other chinese English class.
