The first unit did a good job of showing me the basics of teaching. This unit began by explaining some of the most important characteristics of a good teacher, and then went on to describe each of the main roles a teacher may take in the classroom. I learnt that while some of the characteristics of a good teacher are personality traits, for example being kind and patient, most of the characteristics of a good teacher are skills such as being able to correct students without effecting their motivation. I also learnt that a good teacher should be able to change between roles in the classroom as required for different activities and different students. The next section described the attributes of a good learner and some of the things that could affect a student's participation in the class. I noted that adults tend to learn by comparing English with their native language while children learn by naturally absorbing context, and that adults are more likely to bring expectations and skills from their previous education history. The unit concluded with a description of the different levels a student can be classified into, including a description of the common european framework. I learnt that with beginner and low-intermediate students, the progress that they make is easy to see and measure, while with more advanced students they may lack motivation and feel that they are not progressing as quickly because the progress is harder to measure.

From this Unit I got information, which is really helpful. The most important task is that teacher has to listen student and learn his/her needs. As a whole, this unit has caused me to reflect on the impact of a good teacher creating good students. A good teacher is a combination of being fair, giving individual attention and respect to each student, having content knowledge, having a good rapport with students, and motivating them to learn. When a good teacher takes on a variety of roles in the classroom- organizer, model, tutor, assessor- the students are provided with both structure and the ability to learn independently in a student-centered classroom. Students of all ages can learn a language but are influenced by a variety of factors, including their eagerness to learn, their confidence, past experiences in a classroom, and their age. A good teacher will treat all students fairly, provide motivation, and build their confidence in order for students to become more willing to hear feedback and practice the target language in and outside of the classroom.

This unit was very valuable as it covered the roles of teachers, the language stages of students, the differences between and young learners, and the essentials of being a good teacher as well as recognizing good learners. I thoroughly enjoyed this unit because I had the opportunity to learn in a more detailed way the various roles that a teacher can assume in the classroom and how they can be used effectively in different class activities. I feel like I have been able to get a good understanding of the basic elements of ESL education. I have learned and understood information about a teacher's role in the classroom, their relationship with the students, students' education levels and students' learning processes. I think this unit has provided a good guideline of basic rules and knowledge that can easily be applied to a classroom. Much of this unit was remembering lists and some definitions, which didn't prove too difficult but which took some time to absorb. I feel to understand the English language better I would need to freshen up on the basics learned in Elementary School. This unit was perfect for that. I think that most people may get to be good at a language, however, good grammar knowledge allows us to build more complex sentences, allows us to go further. In this unit I reviewed the structure of a sentence. Also, the different types of Adjectives, Nouns, Adverbs, etc. I have learned the basic rule use for adjectives and how important it is. The game that could be used in a class with the students to help them with the adverbs was very interesting and I will keep it in mind so I could help my future students.

Unit two is a great introduction to grammar. It?s been a while since I had to think about what?s a noun or pronoun. This was a great lesson to help me refresh. I Haven?t done any work like this since the 9th grade. My English class in college focused on writing and not parts of speech. The things that I learned most from this unit the great examples of how to explain what nouns and pronouns are along with verbs, etc. I?m not sure if I just forgot or if this was something I really didn?t learn but I didn?t know that there were forms of verbs such as intransitive and infinitive. I just thought a verb was a verb. I will be bringing this information with me from this unit to pass onto my students.

A lot of these basics I'm happy to say I already knew, though I did pick up some information that I had either forgotten or, being a native speaker, never really thought about. Some examples of this are countable vs. uncountable nouns, the arrangement when using multiple adjectives to describe a noun, and the different classifications of pronouns. Although I think ESL teachers have to take care not to get too hung up on convoluted grammar explanations, it definitely helps to have an understanding of the rules and formulas of different grammar points, so as to help the student recognize patterns and distinguish exceptions.

I found this unit really interesting. I have not learnt grammar since high school and so found it very valuable to cover these topics again. Learning about the parts of speech in more detail,including different types of verbs (transitive, intransitive, auxillary) and adverbs (manner, place, time, degree, frequency, comment, attitude, viewpoint, adding, limiting) was very interesting. The examples were beneficial as it helped explain the concept even further. I had lots of fun with my friends writing sentences using the rule for adjectives (size, age, colour, material.)It was a good unit to help me fill in the blanks in my grammar understanding and have good examples to use when teaching.

Parts of speech - scary! The words in our sentences can be categorised into parts of speech. Some words can have more than one label, which makes it very confusing and quite intimidating! This has never been a strong point for me but I feel that the content of this unit was pitched just right and was challenged but informative at the same time. I discovered 'Gerunds' and realised that I knew what an article was all along along with learning what prepositions, possessive adjectives, intransitive verbs and superlative and comparative adjectives were.

Unit 2 discusses the parts of speech. It gives brief descriptions and examples, but it also explains how they should be taught to students. Before reading the unit I had some unclear things related to the conjunctions and the prepositions, but after studying the unit I managed to understand them much better; therefor I am sure that next time if my students have questions for me, I will be prepared to offer them the correct and easiest explanation and example. Unit 2 (Parts of Speech) is an overview of the fundamentals of English grammar. As a man of forty three years of age, it was my pleasure to review and isolate issues of weakness in my grammar and speech. To my surprise, I found that there are many gaps in my knowledge of sentence structure. This unit clearly defines the following: nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions/conjunctions. These are all essential and with this unit, after studies, will be able to articulate knowledge with integrity and optimism. I enjoyed this study but found it to be difficult- even after being fluent in English, in essence a wonderful discovery for me to remedy accordingly. Thank you tesol!

Parts of speech are the Mile stones of the basic grammar. This unit was very useful for me. I brushed-up on my grammar knowledge in such grammar points as: nouns and their main types (common, proper, compound, abstract and collective), transitive/intransitive verbs, auxiliary verbs. One more time I went through adjectives and their types as well as order in a sentence. Explanation of the gerund and articles is easy to understand. Adverb categorizing makes it easier to explain to learners. I find video addition very substantial for both grammar order and graphic visualization.
