This unit provides a foundation for the role of the teacher and the student in the classroom. I personally learned from the list of factors that affect a student's ability to learn. I didn't realize how many of these factors play a role (such as language awareness and life experiences). I also liked the outline of language levels; this is something that will be very helpful in assessing my own students in the future.

This was a good introduction unit. Knowing what Type of teacher you may be and how to become a better teacher is important for maximum learning. I know that just being a manager/controller isn't the only way to teach. I understand how the age and motivation can affect the learner. Very straight-forward and mostly concerned with definitions. As a unit, I didn't feel that there was very much instruction, although I do understand that this is merely the first of twenty. Learning about the nine different roles a teacher will have in the classroom, even during one lesson was very interesting. I never realized that it could actually be broken down that much, and seeing it divided up like that, it's a lot easier to point out what a teacher's weak spot is. Maybe he or she is great at being a manager, but hasn't gotten down the role of a participant yet. Also, seeing how young learners of different ages have different kinds of motivation, experience, and behavior really makes a teacher think about how well he or she knows their students and how they can keep their attention in the classroom. I think that making sure you know your students will help you to better teach that class, because you know what motivates them, what they have experienced, and how they act.

After learning 1 Unit of this course I found out main characteristics do a good teacher, like ability of motivation students, fairness and knowledge of the subject. I knew that obviously teacher have to love his job and need to have a good knowledge, but I see that it's not enough, teacher should always develop his skills. It also concerns the multiple roles of a teacher, each role requires special skill. Like being assessor, teacher must be fair with all his students, or being manager, teacher have to be good organizer, etc. The other thing I found out that all ages have very large range of differences which have an influence on learning. For instance, younger learners have shorter attention span.

I learned about what makes a good teacher, our roles, different learner levels and types. Also I learned what motivates learners to learn English as a language. I especially enjoyed the part about culture and first language as I have experienced the same in class. I found it very informative and well laid out the unit. I feel that the content was very insightful but more examples could be provided. Also, it appears that for some of the questions on the unit exam, some answers are more open-ended. For me, I would be more successful at the end of the test if each question was more distinct. This unit covered the traits of a good teacher and of motivated learners. It gave specific examples of a teachers role in the classroom and how to motivate students and to always be aware of cultural differences that can lead to teacher and student failures.

I would have to start with that it is the first section and i took me a minute to get back to my roots. I know how a teacher should be. It is when the teacher cares about teaching but more about the student and how to get that across. There are several ways to be a teacher and all are good outlooks depending on the situation.There are also different skill levels that the student will go through depending on the education. I also learned the benefits the student can endure. I've learned that I really need to examine the grade and the skill level that is going on. I want to be understanding and a caring teacher. Who wants to get people to learn the English language with a positive direction.

After going over the first lesson I feel that I have a better insight on the basic structural approaches when teaching a class. Having been a student most of my life, many of the key points made a lot of sense because I have been in the same situations in my classes. The lesson was a good way for me to realize and understand the times I did not feel comfortable or not motivated in class and really understand why. In addition, the basic mechanics of operating in a classroom setting and evaluating the level of understanding of ones students. I see why certain teachers approach a class the way they do now and hope that I can take these basic skills and apply them in the future.

It describes the different roles the teacher can fill and encourages mediation between several roles throughout the course of a lesson. This section was particularly helpful in determining which role to take on, when. I learned that a large part of my methods as an ESL teacher will vary depending on my students, which I intend to make special note of. Students will vary depending on age, experience, motivation, culture, and language level.

Through out this unit we are shown the properties of both the student and the teacher, we are able to determine that if a teacher is able to fulfil their various roles with enthusiasm, that their students will ultimately benefit from this. A teacher needs to be approachable and make themselves available for their students as if the students are not comfortable they will pull away from the lesson and be fearful of asking questions. A good teacher will ultimately have great students, this is why it is very important to ensure that you're students, no matter the age/skill are able to relate to you as an educator. As teachers we need to be vigilant and helpful.

I think the most important thing to take away from this unit is that the role of the teacher is very flexible. Learning a new language is difficult, so the teacher has to be able to provide the Type of atmosphere that will keep the students interested and motivated. It's important to lecture, but at the same time it's important to interact with the students to make the class entertaining. In my own experience as a student I have always learned more from entertaining classes than from ones that were one dimensional and hard to pay attention to.

Comparing the various background of motivations in adults to take on a new language course in comparison to the various motivations for children is very helpful in considering approaches and learning the differences in levels and can be advantageous to grading and placement for future students. Finally, that there are specific levels the learners will be at, and how to work out the stage you will be teaching through those descriptions. It is also important to vary your teaching style depending on the stage they are at e.g. more visual for the beginner learners and more oral for the advanced learners.

I would say that I became conscious of a lot of things that I knew but didn't know I knew. Unit One covered the basic elements of both good teachers and good learners. The primary skills that a good teacher should utilize are managing students, facilitating student participation, modeling good behavior and English language skills, prompting students to contribute to the lesson/conversation, and assessing students on the information and practices that they have learned in the classroom. Good students are inquisitive, not afraid to ask their teacher questions when unsure, are interested in the subject material, and usually have a personal reason for taking an ESL, such as an interest in moving to an English-speaking country, broadening their future career opportunities, or even just improving themselves on a cultural level. Being a professional teacher already, this Unit was an excellent review on some of the finer points of information that I studied while earning my teaching license. I feel that it will prepare me for the other units to come.

Unit 1 taught me a lot about what makes good teachers and good learners. I was able to learn the fundamental roles that teachers must play in order to effectively teach students a new language. In addition to a variety of roles a teacher must play, this lesson also taught me the differences between adult learners and young learners. These differences between learners greatly affects the teaching process and how best to convey the course material to the students. A variety of factors go into teaching and learning a new language, and it is the teacher's responsibility to make sure the knowledge is being passed on and absorbed in the classroom. The teacher must be aware of how to behave accordingly depending on the activities being used as well as each student's differences (whether that is comprehension level, confidence, motivation, etc.). This first unit made aware the importance of analyzing each individual student's progress and needs, and taking on the proper role to help facilitate the learning process.

Another thing I learned is that there are many differences between adults and younger learners such as behavior problems, and motivation. The Unit was very informative on the different Types of roles teachers may have to play and the varying student dynamics one may come across. I feel that in order to be an educator of any type, one must be passionate about their subject, and about helping their students learn. This unit I learnt the micro dynamics of a functional English sentence, or parts of speech. Such as verbs, pronouns, predicates, adjectives, conjunctions and articles were covered thoroughly, leaving me with a confidence in identifying basic words and the grammatical terminology associated with them. The different parts of speech were quite well explained. I don`t remember seeing the word "rather"" in the unit I have learnt about gerunds and how they are used. I'm happy that this course has delved more into some specific things such as the types of pronouns that occur and action vs. state verbs. I feel that I can better explain articles now thanks to the explanation that was in this section of the course.

Each word in a sentence is a part of speech. Nouns Name persons, places, things and concepts. They can be countable (i.e. table) and uncountable (i.e. music). Nouns are also categorized into common (i.e. pen), proper (i.e. London), compound (i.e. play station) and collective (i.e. family). Verbs denote action. Two main types of verbs are action verbs (i.e. work) and state verbs (i.e. be). Auxiliary verbs (i.e. be, have, do) help to form structures (tense, negative form, short answer, question). Verbs can be regular (i.e. change) and irregular (i.e. eat). Adjectives describe nouns. They are arranged in the following order: age, color, material. Adjectives can be possessive (i.e. my,his), comparative (i.e. earlier) and superlative (i.e. highest). Adverbs are used to describe verbs. They are categorized into: manner (i.e. quickly), place (i.e. here) and time (i.e. now). Adverbs of degree describe adjectives (i.e. very spacious). Prepositions show the relationship between the noun/pronoun and the rest of the sentence. Three main categories of prepositions are time (i.e. Before), place (i.e. in), movement (i.e. towards). Infinitive is the basic form of a verb. Gerund is a verb in the basic form with an ending -ing used as a noun. Articles can be definite (used if one knows what they are talking about (the)), indefinite (used if we mention something for the first time (a/an)) and zero (used if we talk about things in general or all together as a group). Conjunctions are linking words used to connect separate words, groups of words or clauses (i.e. and, but, or).

This unit allowed me to review the basis of English grammar. There was nothing new in this unit but it was a really good refresh as I use grammar without really thinking about it. This unit was a good reintroduction and reorientation to parts of speech. For the most part, this unit will serve as a Guide when teaching basic grammar. However, there were some sections (such as Gerunds) in which more details would have been helpful as to quickly understand the grammatical concept. Overall, I have learnt quite a bit--some rules I learned in this uni that I don't even remember learning in school! The different types of verbs (transitive vs. intransitive vs. auxiliary) serves as one example of this.

This is really important for teaching English. It is also really helpful when teaching students who are already familiar with grammar and learning other languages. I honestly have learnt most of this stuff over again and I hope that I don't forget what I have learnt (I can always review things if this is the case. This unit refreshed the amount or importance in the structure of sentences. What was learned from this unit was very valuable to help one teach to others the basic needs to sentence structure. This unit helped me realize how much we really do not pay attention to the proper grammer structure and still have more to work on. I learned all verbs are either transitive or intransitive. The difference between transitive and intransitive verbs is transitive verbs are followed by an object. I learned both definite and indefinite articles. There are four principal verb forms: base form, past simple, past participle and present participle.

to verbs Cofusing issue of possessive pronouns and possessive adj is solved for me. Gerund being as subject as OBJECT was a new sight of language. Confusing moment is all the times of realising which verb is transive, which is intransive. I was fortunate to have excellent grammar teaching, way back, and we even diagrammed sentences, which was very usual. I found this unit to be a very nice review of parts of speech, with some good suggestions on how to explain to students. I appreciated the few teaching suggestions, and hope there will be more specific teaching ideas.

This unit was quite complex and it was interesting to learn all the specific parts of speech that I exercise habitually without thought. With that being said, I believe that teaching parts of speech would almost be impossible without a concrete understanding myself. I know that this section will be one that I will need to revisit multiple times. It is important to know the parts of speech it helps to understand English better and by learning the terms it makes learning for the students easier when they understand how the language is put together. Basically words are classified into different classes according to their use, according to the work they do in a sentence. Verbs are words that show action or condition, are helping verb, or are existence verb. Nouns are any words you can 'OWN' in the sentence. Pronouns take the place of nouns and relate to nouns that are mentioned elsewhere.Adjectives answers the questions 'how many?' 'what kind?' ' which one?' about a noun or pronoun. Adverbs tell how, when, where or why about the verb. Words that join the clause together are known as conjunctions. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun.

Grammar is difficult and often unsystematic or rational. For many things there is no reasonable rhyme or reason to the rules or convention. Having said that this lesson and the material gives me a good base and provides reasonable explanation and theory as to why/how certain grammar points are used as well as examples. As I already know the basic parts of speech, this section was helpful in consolidating my general knowledge of grammar. However, it also helped me understand the some of the complexities of English grammar (especially the different forms of verbs). This has made me realise that, when teaching, these subtleties will need to be explained carefully to students I have understood the usage of the basic parts of speech that have been explained within this unit and the order with which they must be applied. This, therefore, creates understandable and concise sentence structuring both with spoken and written english.

Nouns, articles, verbs, adjectives, pronouns and adverbs are only some of the numerous parts of speech. They are each word in a sentence that can be classified according to its purpose and meaning. Each part of speech has many characteristics and it can be devided into subgroups, which define a sentence more precisely from the grammatical point of view. You can always learn a lot, although it is not the first time you are busy studying the English grammar. Personally I think it helped me to be more confident about the differences between the different parts, like preposition and adverbs.

The focus of Unit 2 was the different parts of speech. There are many different parts of speech, and it is important to be able to classify each of them. Some parts of speech, such as articles, nouns, and verbs can be easy to classify. It gets more difficult, however, when identifying transitive versus intransitive verbs, as well as the principle forms. Also, it is easy to forget about gerunds and the different types of pronouns. As a primarily kindergarten teacher, it is easy to forget the more challenging parts of speech, so Unit 2 was a great refresher.

We do communicate somehow. Communicate with the rest of the world, and ourselves. To understand and to be understood clearly we should be more attentive with what we say and how we form a sentence. So in this case it was really nice to review some grammar rules from a logical angle. Parts of Speech is a basic topic but the groundwork, so when it is perfectly understood, it will be easier to understand the rest of the grammar rules. Learners are generally unaware of what they are using in a sentence so especially order of adjectives and adverbs topic is useful for me. In conclusion, I can say that when we obtain the ability to classify each word in a sentence, we are going to be more accurate and fluent.

This unit reviewed the various parts of speech of English grammatical structure. It went over their function and placement in the sentence. The parts of speech of speech were further broken down and categorized. Particular emphasis was given to the many exceptions in spelling and usage which exist in the English language and can lead to confusion among students studying English.

This Unit has taught me a whole lot about words, there meanings, and the proper way of which they are and should be use. What I take from this unit is that you don?t have to be a walking grammar dictionary to start this journey, but you should be able to better analyze the structure of a sentence, and the different function the parts of speech plays. The basics taught in this lesson can get you a head start in the teaching world. It helps with tips and tricks of grammar usage that can be memorized, also on the usage you just honestly have to know for yourself and expand on it.

While I am a native English speaker and often follow the grammar rules without thinking, this Unit reminded me how complicated the rules of the English language can be. It made me acutely aware of the difficulty that I might face in trying to teach the rules to a non-native speaker, especially with the amount of exceptions to every rule. I did start to think of fun ways to teach grammar rules, such as the suggestions in the ?Common mistakes/errors? section, where students can work together as a team to categorize and correctly place adverbs in a sentence.
