The content of this lesson was helpful, centering on both the teacher's method for effective teaching, and also the what to look for and understand about the students and learners that you may teach from all different age groups. I think it was helpful to hear about the different roles that the teachers perform in the class while teaching the students. I think it is important to actively balance and fulfill all of those roles within the classroom so that effective learning can take place for the students. When these things are done rightly the students will be able to respond to the teacher in a positive manner, and therefore the learning environment will be fun, positive, and effective for students. The information about the students is also very helpful because we need to consider the different levels and maturity of our students so that we can take the right approach and expectation towards them when teaching. In order to teach them effectively we must meet them where they are, and give them the information and help which is appropriate to their situation. This lesson covered all of these essential areas in a very appropriate and helpful way. I feel that this was helpful for me to just break down and to consider the different elements of effective teachers, and of understanding the various audiences that a teacher needs to try and communicate their message to, and how to do so effectively, not only by a lecture in this case, but by fulfilling the various roles of a teacher that will make the language learning process more effective! Great stuff!

This unit clearly defined to me what makes/is expected of a good teacher and likewise a good student. On a practical level, this unit defined different levels of proficiency and defined them in such a way that I can easily identify what level a student belongs in while also explaining cultural and age differences that may affect class dynamics.

I say surprisingly because I did not know what to expect from this course, and was pleased to be challenged by the very first lesson! From Unit 1: Teachers and Learners, I have learned the fundamentals of teaching and how the relationship of the teacher and students plays a very important role in the classroom. Many factors describe what a good teacher is, but it really comes down to how well the teacher can stimulate the class to become motivated to learn the material. This could be done in a variety of ways, but the teacher must have a passion for teaching as well as the students and their needs. Every student has different learning abilities and it is the teachers job to be able to find what is best for the student and how to motivate them to learn. I believe that this unit plays a very important role in the teaching environment and I will greatly remember the facts that I have learned today and apply them into the classroom.

A good teacher knows when he or she is in which role, and how to use the different roles for to give all of the learnes what they need as individuals. A good learner is willing to listen to the language and experiment with it, without the fear of making mistakes. The learner has a motivation for learning the language, and sets goal and reflects on how to reach them. There are different levels of language skills, usually given in this order, from the lowest to the highest level: Beginner, Elementary, Low/pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper intermediate and Advanced. The teacher need to know on which level the learner is, to know its weaknesses in able to give the learner what he or she needs to excel. By working on this unit I have learned not only what a good teacher is, and what a good learner is, but why those qualities and roles are important to use. Every learner is different, and the teacher need to be able to adapt in every situation and to every learner's needs.

During some stages of the lesson, the teacher will have a more dominating/leading role while during other stages of the lesson the teacher will have a more withdrawn role. - In general, a good learner has the following characteristics: willingness to listen, a desire to experiment, willingness to ask questions, ability to think about their own learning process, acceptance of error correction, desire to learn. It is the teacher's responsibility to encourage these attributes. - There are several factors that can influence a learner: age, learning experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, behaviour problems, life experience, culture an first language, language level. - There is a common breakdown for language level: beginners, elementary, low/pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced. I've understood, that a good teacher isn't the one, who is just willing to teach. The good teacher must be a good learner at the same time too. He should be always open to his students, always be ready to help them, behave with them as they would be equal to him. A good teacher should leave all his cultural attitude behind the class door and start a lesson with a new, fresh attitude. A good teacher should be a good friend for a learner while studying, has to make interactive lessons. Also a good learner has to listen to his teacher, take part/ attend the class and the outside activities, organized by a teacher. From this unit I have learned many different things about teaching English. I have learned different ways a teacher must be in the classroom, for example being the model, or the organizer. With these new lessons I can better understand how to be a teacher within the classroom, and which characteristics I need to possess. I have also learned that there are many differences between learners who are younger and then adult learners. It is very important to be able to differentiate between the two when creating lessons and in the classroom. Adult learners are more likely to want to learn, they are more eager and excited. However, they also have more learning experience and may have pre-concieved notions on how lessons should be taught and how to learn them. young learners are a little less motivated. They may usually require more interactive lessons in order to better grasp the language. I have learnt the different characters of a good learner. I think it is important to understand these because in the classroom you are able to asses your students lovely based on this model. If you are able to identify students without the characteristics of a good learner, you're able to adjust some of your lessons and gear certain aspects towards those students (while maintaining a lesson that is inclusive and beneficial to all the students).

A teacher not only has to know the subject material, but has to communicate it in a clear and intelligible way that helps the students learn. I connected this to my own major: as a pianist, my goal when playing for people is not only to play all the notes, but to help the audience understand the music. If I have done this, then I have communicated something and enriched the audience. Two areas I can improve are establishing a good rapport with the class and becoming more aware of the students' pace and rate of comprehension. This lesson made me aware of the different types of language learners, and made me consider which groups I would most enjoy teaching. A good teacher should be able to teach anyone, but should tailor different teaching strategies to fit different audiences. During a lesson, a teacher will have different roles, such as organizer, prompter, tutor, model and etc. Therefore, a good teacher should know which role to take and when. The greatest responsibility of a good teacher is to be able to motivate his/her learners to learn. There are a few general characteristics that a good learner should be, such as willingness to learn, acceptance of correction, willingness to ask questions and etc. Of these characteristics, a desire to learn is deemed the most important characteristic that a learner should have. As for the learners, they can be categorized into few groups. For instant, age, language level, learning experience, cultural background and etc. Therefore, a good teacher should be able to recognize or understand the background of a learner and to apply suitable methods of teaching. A good teacher shouldn?t use the same method to teach an adult as to teach a young learner. Besides that, a good teacher should also be aware of the level ability of the learner. Unit 1 contained information on what is needed to be a good teacher and a good student. There was information on how students are classified as to their skill with a language for both United states and Europe. The section comparing young learners to adult learners put the differences very nicely. The section on what it takes to be a good learner and what motivates students to learn another language was very helpful to me. It gave me ideas on how to be a better learner of chinese. I think the part on the roles of a teacher was the most beneficial. I spent some time thinking of past teachers, who were my favorite and what qualities they had. You are right, they had a very nice balance of the roles you describe.

Throughout Unit 1 I have gained a basic knowledge about the student-teacher relation during class. At this level I am able to distinguish a good learner and a bad learner, being motivation and a desire to learn, the most important aspects of a successful student. By now I have a perspective of how, as a teacher, should behave in class and which attitude to adopt and when. It is of crucial importance to motivate students, maintaining a good interaction and a friendly relationship with all students, involving everyone equally throughout the course and correcting their mistakes without affecting their attitude towards learning the english language. Despite being easier to teach english to young adults due to their greater attention span, it can also be very fun, challenging and entertaining to teach young learners as they are more likely to have an open minded approach to new learning experiences allowing the opportunity to learn through language games and fun activities. This unit is fantastic. There is always so much to revive, to rememeber that it was an absolutely joy to read it, to go through it carefully and thoroughly. I will always come back to this unit to read it one more time because it is that rich. I do however would like to see more exemples especially when we are talking about exceptions that would be the only part i am not very happy but apart from that, this unit is very concise and clear. Great job, cannot wait to read the rest.

This unit covered the different parts of speech. This included nouns, adjectives, comparisons, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, prepositions, etc. There were examples given of each part of speech, as well as exceptions to the rules for each part of speech. I found it very helpful how in depth this unit was regarding the exceptions to some of the rules. Specifically in be past simple, past participle, and present participle verb forms.

Wow! My native language is English, however I really did not know how complicated it was and how much detail is required just to make a simple sentence. I learned so much from this unit, especially about verbs, nouns, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, gerunds etc., however I need to keep re-reading over my notes continuously as I suffer from short term memory problems and it is a huge lot of information to take in. I have found having the test in multiple choice at the end is great as it recalls my memory to the options I have. I am now trying to Name parts of speech in signs/posters/books etc to keep reminding myself what they are.

This lesson was indeed challenging. It was a crash course into all the stuff that I learned in elementary but forgot. Many of my students know the technical terms, and now I'm happy to know what they are. I feel like native English-speaking school should focus on teaching students the technical terms, because it helps in order to speak with a non-native speaker.

This unit helped to identify basic sentence structures and the rules as to their use. It analyses the different types of nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions and articles. Whilst native speakers such as myself utilize these rules on a daily basis subconsciously, it is useful to know how to articulate these subtle nuances to potential students. The content for this unit focused on the various basic parts of speech. This includes the parts of a basic sentence, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions. Students will be able to efficiently write and deconstruction sentences when they are knowledgeable about the rules for how to construct sentences. I liked the unit but i feel i need to practice a lot more. The examples given were clear and I feel I can use those in the classroom with the students. Even though this is the second lesson I do, I feel I am going to learn a lot from this course.

In this unit I learned the structure of the English language. It was a great refresher course and really showed me the difference in what I learned in school and what I use now. The difference was staggering. I also learned the correct way to phrase portions of a sentence and how everything I say should come together to for a correct thought.

When I was younger and learned about parts of speech we would use a diagram in which the nouns (subject, object0, verbs ,adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, etc. were all put into the proper alignment on the diagram. At first it was difficult to categorize the words, but after many examples it really made sense to see how the different parts of speech fit in.

This unit covers the basic parts of speech that form sentences. A sentence must consist of at least a subject and a verb. From there it can develop in a variety of ways depending on the Type of information that needs to be communicated. A sentence can contain nouns including common, proper,abstract, collective and sometimes two words can form a compound nouns such as spotlighting.Adjectives describe nouns; articles introduce nouns eg a snail or the ball; verbs describe action and also times of actions; adverbs describe or give more information to the action and may refer to the manner, place, time, frequency and degree. Gerunds is the -ing form of a verb and it's used as a noun eg playing rugby is dirty work. Pronouns are used in place of nousn eg I, me, he and she; prepositions tell us when and where things happen eg Before, at; conjunctions join words or groups of words. There are a range of types of each of these just to make things more difficult or should I say simpler.

I learnt that there is many different types of verbs and nouns that i had not come across, this unit was very hard for me to do as grammar is not a strong point, as well as the fact that there was so many new types of verbs and nouns that i had not been told about Before. compared to the 1st unit of this course, it was much harder unit, dealing with a complex information and many rules, categories and subcategories, but examples were very useful and video material summed it up in a nice way... I feel like I understand English grammar (structures of sentences) much better now. This exercise and test reading was very fun and a bit challenging as well. We always use these words and not really know what they are in the exact parts of speech. It was great to get a great review and learn the parts of speech that I did not know.

This lesson was very helpful in the way it set out the different segments that make up English grammar. The first topic was nouns, which has 5 main types, then there was adjectives which was broken up into comparatives and superlatives and superlatives. Next we looked at articles, of which there are two types definite and indefinite. This was followed by verbs. This was quite interesting because, it was good finding out that verbs are more than just doing words. Then there was adverbs, gerunds which a little tricky to understand, but was explained well. Following this was pronouns, which can be separated into 4 types. Then there was prepositions and conjunctions. The topic of English grammar can be quite hard to understand but this lesson helped me on the path to teaching it.
