Singapore is located at the bottom of the Malay Peninsula and is the world’s only island city-state. The city was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 as a trading post for the British Empire and it remains a thriving center of global trade and investment today. Since gaining independence from the British in the 1960s, Singapore has gone from strength to strength and is one of the original four “Asian Tigers”. The city has a well –developed infrastructure and the “Garden City” policy has balanced the rapid urbanization with plenty of green spaces and nature reserves.

Amongst the skyscrapers and high rise apartment building you can find distinct districts that reflect the ethnic origins of the original inhabitants. Chinatown is where the majority Chinese population first settled and despite extensive development still retains some of the original architecture from the colonial period. Little India is where the British settled Indian workers and is the place to go for bright colors, Indian pop music and fantastic food. The Arab Quarter was settled by traders from Yemen and is a thriving shopping street today. The Colonial District was the center of British power in Singapore and is home to City Hall, the old Supreme Court building and St Andrew’s Cathedral.
