In this unit I've learnt alot about what it takes to be a good teacher. There are many different roles a teacher has to think about when conducting classes to make sure each class is varied and kept interesting, so that students stay motivated and want to learn. Developing a good relationship with the learners is crucial, as well as adapting to different learner's needs and styles. In Unit 1 I learned what the role of the teacher is and when and how to use different techniques. I also learned what different age groups that I may teach and what makes for a good learner. I learned what the different learning levels are. Lastly, I learned what motivates learners in different age groups. The section highlighted the different levels of learners and the main differences between them. It emphasized the qualities that both a good teacher and a good learner ideally will possess and explained why those qualities were desirable.

I enjoyed this unit because while the ideas presented were not new, the names and clear descriptions were. For example, I knew that teachers played a variety of roles but I never knew quite how many and how different they were. It was best described in the accompanying video with the most common sentences used when in different roles. While mostly common sense, I thought it was useful to learn the different motivations of students and their varying behaviours at each learning stage.

I currently work for a Christian school that is K-12 and the way the lesson broke down the differences in the age groups is spot on. I see it every day. I thought this unit was very well done, I learned a lot from it, specially on the monitoring point of view. It gave me one more reason to talk less and take the opportunity of sometimes staying away from the students when they are performing certain activities so I can observe their progress and behavior more accurately.

In this lesson I learned the more specific and technical terms for the language learning levels which was interesting. Also I found the discussion about motivation and typical behavior divided by age group to be really enlightening and useful. I think it is really good to know particularly about which groups of students will be more difficult to motivate and why they might be that way. Particularly the example of self consciousness when it comes to mistakes felt very relevant. I know as an adult learner of a foreign language I am often too embarrassed to speak in front of the class, but feel far more comfortable holding a one on one conversation with my professor outside of the classroom.

What I feel like I have gathered in this unit was how important certain qualities of teachers are to the learning of their students. I?ve learned several things in Unit 1 of this course. This was an enlightening introductory unit because it gave me some perspective on what to expect in becoming a teacher. Throughout the unit I often reflected on my past experience as a foreign language student, and thought about what worked (in terms of learning the material and maintaining my concentration) and what didn't. In the future, once I do become an ESL/tefl teacher, I will be more conscientious about the way I present my material, while motivating students at the same time. While the material is important, merely presenting it and talking for 99% of class time may not be of any benefit to the students. The course must be immersive and interactive for both children and adults to learn.

This unit is about what makes a good teacher and learner. I was aware that as a teacher there are many roles for you to take during class, however, i never fully realised the effects of each role. For example, teachers detach themselves from the class in order to monitor the class and provide them with information on how Long an activity will last and whether or not it is successful. This section mainly explains that there are 9 roles of a teacher. As for the section about being a good learner, it has made me more aware of how many factors can be influencing the students progress in class. I am now more aware that culture plays a huge role in how the student will participate in class. This section also goes on to explaining how motivation, age, learning experience, behaviour problems all play a part in how good a learner will be. Another thing that i learned is how to briefly identify what language level the student is at.

I feel a lot better about knowing the different stages of a person learning a new language, and what to expect for that person. It will make it easier when planning lesson plans if I am able to know how much the students already know. I also enjoyed the breakdown of all of the roles a teacher plays. It is important to utilize all of the roles, and to use them in a correct matter, making sure that one doesn't become the fall back option, especially if that role does not appear to be working.

This unit made clear that a successful ESL classroom involves a partnership between the teacher and the students. This unit provided information on what constitutes being a 'good teacher'. To be a 'good teacher', a person must be patient, kind, reasonable, understanding, motivational as well as having a good rapport and good subject knowledge. The teacher must perform in such ways in the classroom so that they act as the controller, assessor, organiser, facilitator, prompter and role model. I have learnt that a combination of these acts ad attributes makes for a 'good teacher', who cares more for learner and their learning than the teaching. The second section of this unit explained what made a 'good learner'. There are a wide variety of learners, from adults to primary school students, all of which learn in different ways and at different levels. The level system includes, beginners, elementary, intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced. To be a 'good learner' it involves being able to listen, experiment, except corrections and to be able to evaluate their own learning. I have learnt that to achieve the higher grade levels it requires the leaner to be motivated, this can be due to a few things, whether it be future job prospects or an interest in another language. However, this motivation can only be harnessed by the enjoyable, entertaining and varied lessons that the teacher provides.

I recognize that I prefer some roles (controller, model, tutor) over others (participator, prompter) due to my personality and past experience. I hope as the course continues to discover practical ways of implementing those teacher-roles which don't come naturally to me.

Once you understand how sentences are formed you can create form examples for students to alter and use. It is amazing how many rules and exceptions there are in English grammar. In this aspect of the unit, I covered grammar in parts of the speech. Here, i was able to cover the different grammatical systems that build the speech. This unit has expanded my existing knowledge on grammar. I learnt the correct structures of a sentence, and this has given me more confidence to correct learners. This unit defined and gave examples of all the different parts of speech, such as a noun, pronoun, adverb, adjective, gerund etc. I am now able to properly recognize the different parts of speech that construct a sentence; something that came naturally to me as being a native English speaker, but was unable to explain.

This unit was challenging me, had to spend extra time figuring out the language again. It's been awhile since i've looked at and thought about the English Language. I was reminded of nouns, pronouns, adjectives etc etc and the rules that came along with each stage. As a native speaker I use english every day but don't always know why I use certain words in a certain order. This material has introduced me to the basic parts of speech which has been helpful in understanding how a sentence is structured. In the second unit I was able to find tools to understand the parts of speech more clearly. It's very important for my knowledge and for my working career to have a basic understanding of sentence structure. While I already knew most of the information presented here, the sections that discussed certain rules were the most informative. For example, the section on rules for forming adjective clusters Before the noun, how to form adjectives in the comparative, how to form adjectives in the superlative, how to form adverb clusters were all very useful. I had not previously formalized these rules in my own use of the English language.
