This unit discussed the attributes that make a good teacher and a good student as well as the roles both play in the teacher-learner interaction. While a good teacher will have an excellent knowledge of the subject to be taught, she/he must also have a respect for all learners and cultures and the ability to adapt their lessons to reach their students and maximize respective learning styles. The students also have a role in this interaction and a good teacher will be able to motivate all students (hopefully) to take an active role in the learning process. While the teacher will take on different roles at different points in the learning cycle which will depend upon the knowledge level of the students, it is crucial that the teacher does not take over the class and dominate the lessons. Maximizing student-talk time and student-centered learning should be the goal of the ESL teacher in order to help students reach mastery of their chosen second (of other) language.

Good teachers love teaching as much as they love learning. In fact, when they themselves are continually learning they are better teachers. Specifically, they build subject knowledge at every opportunity, both because they are fascinated by, in this case, language, and also because they want to be a valuable resource for their students. The teacher plays many roles in the classroom from leading the class to organizing the activity to modeling correct usage and so on. The more one develops the abilities associated with these roles, the more one can pick and choose which role to play when. For instance, if the teacher has been guiding a lot of instruction directly, it may be time to step back and observe quietly. Or if students seem a little uncertain, joining in as a participant can often add motivation to the room. One of the key roles is assessor, because if you don't know where students are at, you can't plan the appropriate lessons. This brings up the levels. Students may be anywhere from Beginners on up to Advanced and the reality is that they may all be mixed together in the same class. The first step is assessing where they are at. The next step is planning activities that sometimes place them in homogenous groups, sometimes in heterogeneous groups. The other aspect of assessing students is to use that information to clearly communicate with the student. If they know where they're at and they know what's the next level and how to get there, they stand a much greater chance of success.

The other is observation in the section about the motivation, which points out the difference in motivation between the adults (they made the decision to study English) and the children (they did not). This first unit on teachers and learners was very interesting because it broke down aspects of education that I had previously taken for granted. I had been a student for many years, and I have seen teachers use these various methods to teach without ever reflecting on what they were doing. For example, I have seen physical education teachers model the proper way to shoot a basketball, just as I have been given feedback and assessments on an essay I had written. Prior to this unit, I had taken for granted the methods and tools teachers use to teach effectively in various situations. In the upcoming units, I will read the content material and reflect which method of teaching would be best teach that content to students. The section on what makes a good learner was also good to read, and when I was reading it I began to realize how a teacher could bring out these positive qualities in a student. Or, at least, ensure that the students are not shut down and kept from demonstrating these qualities. For example, Question 19 of this quiz: the students become nervous about answering questions because the teacher always corrects every error and mistake the students make in all stages of the lesson. It is within the teacher's power to correct students in a way that doesn't make them scared to participate, and give constructive feedback without making students feel stupid. I am beginning to think more about how a teacher can bring out these good learning qualities in a student, and how the quality of a teacher sometimes has an impact on the quality of the learner. The relationship between teacher and student is interconnected. Finally, the section on the different stages of learners was good to go over. The content itself was fairly straightforward, describing a learners' motivation, experience, and behaviour based on their age. While learning this information, I began to what what types of exercises would be best for learners in different age groups, and what skills would be best to develop for children of different ages. I hope in future units, or in the certification to Teach English to young learners class, I will get more details on what exercises would be best for children of various ages.

I found it helpful as an introduction to the relationships that exist between teachers and learners, and on how to be an effective, learner-centric teacher. This unit focused on the qualities of good teachers and learners, the different roles teachers may play, and the different characteristics of learners. The list of roles a teacher can play was a clear breakdown of the ways a teacher can teach or assist students. Many experienced teachers do this rather seamlessly but as someone learning teaching it was nice to have distinctions made. I was particularly interested in the ways a teacher can hand over more autonomy to the students through facilitating or participating as an equal. I learned it's important for students to do their own exploring and learning and for the teacher to observe in order to improve on his or her lessons. The list of learning characteristics, specifically the way they vary between learners of different ages was very helpful. I had never considered that because adults and young learners have different learning experiences, the adults would have a more fixed view of how teaching should be done and may have difficulty with new or innovative teaching techniques. Motivation differs for adults and young learners as well. I now feel that one of the greatest challenges for a teach of young learners is keeping them motivated. Adults will tend to be more motivated simply because they are choosing to take the English class. This reinforces my desire to work with adults. Finally, the breakdown of language levels was helpful in understanding how teachers evaluate students and how language is gradually acquired.

The first one being how to identify the language level of the students. Overall, the lesson was very straight forward and easy to understand. The most valuable information, personally speaking, was the section regarding adverbs. It prompted me to researcher further split infinitives and the argument regarding that topic. Also of use was the section explaining the difference between prepositions and conjunctions. Since they both function to explain relationships between words in a sentence, it can be confusing for students to distinguish between them at times.

This unit broke down the parts of speech. It not only explained the parts of speech that we remember from grammar school, such as, nouns, verbs and adjectives, but it also went into further review and detail of each. I especially enjoyed how it explained things that we, as english speakers, know but are unaware of how it may affect our students and their understanding of the language. For instance, most of our verb conjugations are irregular and; making our nouns plural may be difficult as well because they do not all follow the rule of adding an s or es.

This section does an excellent job categorizing the different parts of speech in a cohesive order. It is important to organize each part and sub-part clearly and distinctly. The parts of speech are more than just nouns, objects and verbs and getting into the more complex parts like gerunds and adverbs make the sentence more interesting. The hardest parts of speech for me to understand are transitive and transitive verbs. I appreciate the clarity of the explanation for these parts, and would recommend even further development of these two categories of verbs.

In addition, I have learnt the different sub-categories in which nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions are divided.

While English is my first language, I found this unit difficult. I think I found it difficult to deconstruct something that is so deeply ingrained in my thinking that I don't even need to think of grammar, how it structures my sentences. A friend of Mine has told me how the English language has many exceptions- the most of all languages in fact- but actually learning about them is daunting to think I will in the future need to teach others them. Interesting unit though!

The grammatical aspect of teaching is challenging for students but also teachers. I think teachers need to understand as much as possible of verb tenses, or any other form of grammar in order to explain and teach their students in easy ways so students can stay motivated. I would think that grammar in general is challenging in itself and having to teach it or learn it can be difficult for some learners but easier for others.

This unit covers, very simply, the basic grammar and parts of speech in an English sentence. Of course, the large majority of this unit's content was already known to me, but I did learn a few new things. For example, until now I hadn't realised there was a distinction between possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives. I had thought they were all pronouns. I think the way the basic grammar was explained would be helpful to an ESL learner, and I found it useful to have the possible difficulties and pitfalls they may face pointed out.

Unit Two consisted of the different parts of speech. It talked about examples of each Type of parts of speech. It went from simple to more complex, and was well sorted out by what type of speech it was discussing. It included all the rules, and how to determine what part of speech certain words were. This unit is a concise overview of the parts of speech of the English language. As an elementary school teacher, I am very comfortable with teaching the basic parts of speech. I learned more about the nuances of verbs (transitives and intransitives) as well as categorizing nouns as countable and uncountable. In this unit I was reminded of the parts of speech that I use everyday. I remembered learning about them in grade school and it was a lovely refresher course. I feel that I can properly break down a sentence, know the different parts, and explain them to someone else.

I have gained a lot from learning about different parts of speech. Before this course I would speak English without really thinking about it's complexity, because it always came naturally to me. However, learning about participles and gerunds made me realize that there are rules that I unconsciously apply to my language even though they are very difficult to understand. This will help me empathize more with my students, and it is important to empathize with them since they will be trying to understand something that comes so easily to me.

Adjectives can be comparative like ""easier"" and ""thinner"". If the adjective has more than 2 syllables degree and frequency. In this unit I learned a lot about different types of words. I learned about nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, articles and gerunds.I found that articles was the easiest topic, whereas pronouns, adverbs, verbs and adjectives caused me to work a bit harder. Especially the distinction between possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives was difficult.

I think this unit is very useful because without understanding grammar we cannot understand completely a language. Sometimes, people use a language, but do not know how to explain why they say a sentence in a certain way, they just know. As a teacher, I have to know grammar and I have to explain to my students why they have to follow grammar rules and why if they do not follow those rules they might not make total sense when they speak or write English.

It also mentions the order that adjectives go in, which isn?t exactly a ?rule,? but more of a ?guideline?: describe first the size, then the age, then the color, next the material, and finally the noun (example: the big, old, brown, wooden table). In addition, comparative adjectives with more than two syllables do not have ?-er? added to them (example: ?beautifuler? should be ?more beautiful?). Likewise, superlative adjectives with more than three syllables do not have ?-est? added to them (example: ?difficultest? should be ?more difficult?).
