I enjoyed the content on the different roles of the teacher. It was nice to have some terms put to each of the different situations a teacher will encounter over the course of a class. As an active teacher, these terms help me understand what is happening at a particular moment and help me to remain at ease when difficult situations arise. This unit focused on the qualities, roles and responsibilities of both 'good' teachers and 'good' students of an English class. It also explained the various language levels of students. For me, it brought more clarity to the various roles teachers play in the classroom. Though I have played all of these roles at some point in my lessons, I am now more aware of them. The material regarding student motivation, behaviour and experience based on their age certainly confirms my own observation and experience with ESL students.

In order to effectively influence a student?s full potential, students have to be evaluated as to which category of language level they fall under. This is done to avoid a pupil becoming bored or uninterested in English, as the lesson could turn out to be to challenging for the student or too easy for an advanced student. Different students would have various reasons for studying English which could affect their motivation for the subject. Also I learned what general characteristics a good student should have. The age differences are something to take into consideration when choosing what students I would like to teach. Young students learn differently then adult students and their motivation levels are also different. I have learned fundamentally about how successful learning depends a lot on not just the teacher's attributes and abilities but also the students' characteristics. I have noted how differences in age, and culture and current english ability affect their needs. Perhaps the most important factor for learning in a student is their motivation and desire to learn and participate in the classroom. It seems that even the most highly knowledgeable teacher won't be able to get results if they somehow de-motivate their students. But I am reassured and glad to know that kindness and patience (which I think I posess alrrady from my work in healthcare) will help. This unit has also made me more interested in getting to know my prospective learners to 'push the right buttons' to generate only productive interaction.

The teacher wears nine hats that range from being the traditional teacher-centered manager/controller role to playing the more passive facilitator role when the teacher scaffolds learning while letting the class be student-centered. The student is defined by characteristics that influence learning ability and define language level. Unit one gave me a better understanding of how the various roles of the teacher influence student learning. Unit one also made me aware of the Common european Framework on page nine of unit one. It was interesting to learn the six language levels defined by European educators. Being previously only aware of the american rating system for English language learners this new information encouraged me to look online and seek out more information to learn more about how Europeans view the language learning levels.

For example, I had never learned what a gerund is, nor had I learned the difference between transative and intransative verbs. This unit was very helpful in reviewing basic English grammar. As it mentioned in the reading, grammar is something that is difficult for both the student and the teacher. This unit gave me a better overview of basic English grammar and clear definitions of each part of speech. With its many irregularities and exceptions to the rule, I believe that simple explanations with many examples would help the students understand this part of the English language.

?Being good at grammar is essential for a teacher to be able to gain their students? confidence and respect. ?The simplest form of structure is ?a sentence?. ?A sentence must consist of at least a subject and a verb. ?Many sentences consist of a subject, a verb and an object. ?Depending on the purpose and meaning of a word in a sentence, we can classify them into various parts of speech. ?A noun names people, animals, places, things, qualities, states. ?A common noun names general names of people, animals, places and things. For example, teacher, pen, dog, city, etc. ?A proper noun names the specific names of people or places, for example, Tom, Europe, etc. They always start with a capital letter. ?A compound noun is formed by combining two nouns, for example, train station, teapot, etc. ?An abstract noun names an idea, something non-material, which cannot be touched. ?A collective noun names a group of individuals as they were one. ?Plural nouns are used to represent more than one thing. They are usually formed by adding ?s? or ?es?. ?There are other special rules for forming plural nouns as well. ?Irregular plural nouns do not follow any rule. For example, tooth ? teeth, foot-feet, etc. These must be memorised. ?Countable nouns represent people, creatures or things that can be counted. They can be preceded by a/an/the and can be used in the plural. ?Uncountable nouns nouns represent people, creatures or things that cannot be counted. They can be preceded by a/an and cannot be used in the plural. ?Some nouns can be countable as well as uncountable depending on the sense in which they are used. ?A noun being countable or uncountable affects other parts of a sentence. ?Adjectives are used to describe nouns. ?The basic rule for the order in which adjectives should be listed if multiple adjectives are used to describe a noun is: size>age>colour>material>noun ?There are many other rules for the order of adjectives. ?A comparative is used to compare two things or people, for example, taller, higher, etc. ?There are various rules for forming comparatives. ?A superlative is used to represent extreme cases in a comparison, for example, tallest, highest, etc. ?There are various rules for forming superlatives. ?There are two types of articles in English, definite (the) and indefinite (a and an). ?Indefinite articles refer to any member of a group in general. ?Definite articles refer to specific or particular members of a group. ?There are various rules for the usage of articles. ?When no articles are used Before a noun, we often refer to it as ?zero article?. There are many rules for the usage of the zero article. ?A verb is a word that represents ?doing? something ? actions; and states. ?A verb is used with the subject to form the basis of a sentence. ?The two kinds of verbs are Transitive and Intransitive. ? A transitive verb is usually followed directly by an object. But if it is used to simply describe what someone is doing, then they do not have to be followed by an object, and in this case, they are used like intransitive verbs. ? An intransitive verb is a verb that cannot be followed directly by an object. - Some verbs can be used as transitive or intransitive verbs depending on how they are used. ?Infinitives are verbs in their base form and are formed by adding ?to? before the verb. ?Verb Forms ? base form, past simple form, past participle form and present participle form. ?For regular verbs, the past simple ends in ??ed?. ?For irregular verbs, the past simple does not end in ??ed?. ?Auxiliary verbs help form a tense or an expression by combining with present or past participles or infinitives of other verbs. ?The auxiliary verb does not carry the main meaning but helps the main verb. ?There are three auxiliary verbs ? ?do?, ?have? and ?be?. ?Auxiliary verbs also have base form, past simple form, past participle form and present participle form. ?Adverbs add meaning or information to the action, quality or state denoted by a verb. ?Adverbs of degree can also modify an adjective or another adverb. ?Five main types of adverb ? Manner, Place, Time, degree, Frequency. ?Other types of adverb ? Comment/Attitude, Linking, Viewpoint, Adding/Limiting. ?Most adverbs are formed by adding ?-ly? to an adjective. ?An adverb is normally placed after the object of a transitive verb. ?An adverb is usually placed immediately after an intransitive verb. ?Adverbs of frequency are placed between the subject and the verb or between the auxiliary verb and the verb. ?Order of adverbs ? No hard and fast rule, but usually we follow the sequence ? place>manner>time ?The most common mistakes lie in spelling and position. ?Gerunds are the ?-ing? form of a verb used as a noun. ?Gerunds can be used as a subject, an object of the verb, an object of the preposition. ?Gerunds can also follow some verbs, such as admit, consider, delay, remember, like, etc. ?Prepositions are sometimes followed by the gerund if an action is indicated. ?Pronouns are words that are used instead/in place of more precise nouns or noun phrases. ?Types of pronouns ? Personal, Possessive, Reflexive, Relative. ?Prepositions show the relationship between a noun and a pronoun or some other word in a sentence. ?Categories of preposition ? place, time, movement and a miscellaneous category including ?of?, ?with? and ?for?. ?Conjunctions join words or groups in a sentence. ?Conjunctions can either join words of the same class, or join clauses of sentences.

I am amazed at how complex the English language is when it is broken down! Absolutely fascinated by the many 'rules' which I use in daily speech to perfection without realising how or why: Ex. Size- age- colour- when structuring adjectives Before the noun... Big old ginger cat would sound silly any other way. Transitive and intransitive use of verbs had me perplexed at first. Present, past simple, past participle boils down to memorization and repetition especially with our plethora of 'irregulars'. I feel I have a deeper understanding of English grammar despite how confusing it truly is.
