Santorini is part of the Cyclades island group and is actually made up of five separate islands, Santorini itself plus Therasia, Aspronisi and the two volcanic islands of Palaia Kameni and Nea Kameni. For many years these islands have drawn visitors from all over the world due to their stunning natural beauty and authentic greek atmosphere, just two reasons why Santorini provides the perfect location for studying your tefl/tesol certification course with ITTT.
The island of Santorini has been greatly influenced by the extensive volcanic activity that has regularly occurred here over the centuries. Between 1866 and 1870, the author Jules Verne visited the area to witness the spectacular volcanic eruptions that were taking place at the time. His personal experiences of these spectacular sights were to become immortalised in several of his books including ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’ and ‘The Mysterious Island’. These and many other eruptions over the years have led to the stunning landscape that is one of the many attractions of these captivating islands.
One of the biggest volcanic eruptions the world has ever known occurred here around 3000 BC. This devastating natural event brought about the destruction of the Minoan civilisation and left behind a massive crater, the edges of which are the huge 85 metre high cliffs where many of Santorini’s villages are perched upon today.
Due to the island’s long history, it is no surprise that there are many fascinating cultural attractions to visit during your stay here. Two particularly important sites that you will not want to miss are the Venetian fortress at Pyrgos and the ancient ruins of Thira. As well as these important cultural sites, the island also has many fantastic beaches where you can relax in the sun or take part in a variety of sports and activities.
