This Unit focused on the qualities of good teachers and learners, the relationship between the teacher and the learner, the role of the teacher, factors that can affect learning such as background and age, and the different levels of English learning. I feel after having studied this Unit that I have a better understanding of what to look for when considering my students. The example that caught my attention was that of how different cultures view English teaching uniquely and mentioned that in asian cultures students generally only speak when spoken to. I think this cultural sensitivity is vital to being able to connect with the students and understand how they approach the class and what to expect.

This unit described qualities of a good teacher and the roles and responsibilities that teachers have in a classroom. It helped me to look for these qualities in myself and consciously utilise them while teaching. I believe this is likely to make me a better teacher. It also made me aware of some of the roles and responsibilities that teachers have but were not that evident to me Before taking this Unit. I expect this to improve my performance in the classroom. The Unit also described the qualities that good learner have which I would try to encourage some of which amongst my students. Describing aspects related to teaching students at different age groups with different levels of understanding of English as well as highlighting the importance of cultural awareness were all important in determining at what level and how to teach the students. Being aware of issues related to age and cultural background of students is likely to avoid certain inadvertent behaviour by teachers which could potentially cause the student to disconnect from the classroom and perhaps loose respect for the teacher, with the resultant failure of the teacher in conveying knowledge to his or her students.

In this unit I examined the qualities, roles and responsibilities of both prospective teachers, like myself, and students in the classroom. I learned the basic framework of what makes an exemplarily teacher and learner. I especially enjoyed the point made on page 1 of the unit, which states, ?What exactly makes a good teacher? A teacher that really cares about his/her teaching, but cares even more about the learning of the students.? In addition, I liked that the unit broke down the various roles a teacher plays in the classroom in a very concise manner, such as Prompter and Assessor. One usually thinks of a teacher as just simply that, a teacher, without truly delving into all the different parts a teacher must take on in the classroom. That being said, I think my own teaching style will match up well to the more recent emphasis upon 'student-centered' lessons that was emphasized in this unit. Furthermore, the Common european Framework recently established by the Council of Europe that was outlined in this unit was also something I found essential to know in being a tefl instructor, and I am grateful to have received an explanation of it. In conclusion, this unit provided me with a necessary foundation that I can now successfully build upon in later units.

I liked how the different roles that a teacher needs to play in order to effectively teach their students. Every single one of those roles are important to master and use when teaching, and I can recall specific examples of past teachers filling those roles teaching me. I'm more concerned dealing with cultural differences when teaching though and if the same roles will/would apply to any given culture. Then insights on learners and their levels of learning were insightful as well, but felt more like common sense.

Through this lesson I learned the different roles a teacher must play depending on the situation and activity. I also learned the various characteristics that define a good teacher and student. I believe that this knowledge will be useful in not only self-development as a teacher, but also in assessing students and finding ways to better motivate them. I also found it useful to have a breakdown of the different language levels of students. Indeed, based on the levels of the class as a whole and students on an individual level, I will have to devise an appropriate lesson plan while addressing individual needs through tutoring. I also learned the pros and cons of working with adult versus young learners of English. I believe this will help me decide which age group I am most interested in working with.

This unit provides a brief overview of the types of teachers and learners one is likely to encounter in a tefl atmosphere. Their respective motivations, their weaknesses and strengths as well as potential pitfalls are touched upon. The unit also gives a cursory description of the language levels one will encounter, both in the academic sense as well as the standardized CEF guideline descriptions. This last aspect was especially informative, as my own foreign language learning experiences did not conform specifically to these guidelines, and I have always been somewhat unsure as to how ESL students/pupils should be categorized.

Most of all, I have learned that patience is key; not only from the teachers' perspectives, but also from the students. It is important to make it clear that every class is a learning process, from both sides. I've learned some of the major differences between teaching children and teaching adults. I feel as if this section was very informative and contained a lot of content. I remember learning all of this from 1st grade to my senior year in high school and this was a very good review. The video was helpful while the reading provided much more in depth examples and information. Understanding and recognizing the parts of speech is the first step in learning English grammar. Each word in sentence plays a role in their meaning and their function. Nouns are words used to represent places, animals, things, people, states and qualities. Adjectives describe nouns. Verbs are action or state of being words. Adverbs add meaning to verbs. Pronouns substitute for nouns or noun phrases in a sentence to make it less repetitive and less awkward. A gerund is the ?ing for a verb used as a noun. An article is a word that is used Before a noun to show whether the noun refers to something specific or not. It was a good review of the different parts if speech, and how they are used within the language. As native speakers, we do this intrinsically, and it takes time and patience to break it down for language learners. The difficulty lies in the fact that ver rule has an except atoning and no rules are definite. This poses greater challenges for the student, and teacher alike. So, it is important to not allow the students to view grammar rules as definitive equations, but rather become more comfortable with the natural flow of the language.

Unit 2 deals with the Parts of Speech (nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions). As for Unit 1, Unit 2 was very useful to understand that it is not always easy to teach others those grammar rules that we may have absorbed almost unconsciously. It was interesting to re-read the Unit through the eyes of a teacher instead of a learner's. It made me think again of how I can teach people effectively of things that I may give for granted.

This lesson on the parts of speech refreshed my memory of the most effective Names and descriptions of the parts of speech. I found that many of these categories seemed quite familiar once explained. One in particular, the gerund verb (the verb from used when the verb serves as a noun,) was a concept I knew but could not concisely articulate until now. Ensuring that I have a strong definitive idea of each Type of words formal name and definition seems as though it will be quite helpful when trying to consistently convey grammar concepts.

I have learned how to describe various parts of speech and I am now more able to identify them at sight and explain why they are present at their particular location in the given sentence.
