The unit focused on teachers and learners. The first sub-unit was on the qualities and roles of a teacher. It is really interesting to see how both personality and acquired skills form part of these qualities. It has also been interesting to look at the various roles a teacher assumes during a lesson depending on the situation and the intended aim. In this unit, the qualities of a good learner were also addressed, a good teacher alone is not sufficient. The greatest quality of a good learner, in my opinion, is the desire to learn. The language level, the differences between young learners and adults and motivations to learn English are important aspects to know as a teacher, to be able to reach the students.

Essentially, the most important quality a teacher should have is real love for his/her job. That means caring about his/her teaching, but even more about the learning of the students. From my own brief teaching experience, I have learned that it is important for a teacher to be able to switch between the various roles he/she might play during each lesson, knowing which role to take when, so as to involve the students as much as possible. What makes a good student? Motivation, essentially...but this element strongly depends on age factors: an adult is more likely to be motivated, having probably chosen to attend your course, maybe for future career prospects, but at the same time might be influenced by his previous bad or good learning experiences or his nervousness. A 15 year old might have been forced by his parents to take language lessons, and might occasionally be restless and behave badly, but on the other hand could be strongly interested in English language because he/she wants to, for example, understand and translate songs by his favourite singer. A 5 year old will probably have a very short attention span, but will be more willing to accept corrections, is likely to learn faster and without referring continuously to his/her mother tongue (which he might still not have mastered completely), and will enjoy games, songs, and drawing, therefore being quite easy to involve. In conclusion, a good teacher should evaluate ,according to each different learner (sorted by age, motivation, and obviously language level: beginners - elementary - pre intermediate - low intermediate - upper intermediate - advanced), which is the best teaching strategy to adopt. The relationship between teachers and learners is the real issue here. A motivated, caring, enthusiastic teacher is more likely to have successful students.

I found that the content of this first unit explained the variations in students and in methods of teaching. It has taught me the different approaches to teaching and the ways in which the teacher must adjust quickly to different situations and different students. I have learned the qualities and aspects that make a successful teacher and learner. Teachers must have both good personality traits, such as patience and kindness, as well as a desire to motivate their learners to the best of their abilities. Teachers must be able to correctly gauge an equal amount of attention spent on each student. A very brief but useful description about teacher's roles. It shows how to react in a classroom from time to time. There is also very useful information about language levels and european framework that I Haven't come across. However, there would have been more information about teaching methods. This unit allowed me to refresh my knowledge about teachers role. I found them very interesting and I think that it would be beneficial to make a test which results would say what kind of teacher are you. I've also learned about what makes a good learner, which is going to help me learn Mandarin.

Getting to know the learners and their culture is an important part to the varying roles of a teacher, which was the latter half of the unit. The different Type of learners, which was first discussed as adult and young learners. Then the content covered the possible backgrounds of these learners. From this unit, I have learned that it is important to play multiple roles in the classroom. I also learned that there are more than three language levels; which is all my current school abroad allows us to level our learners. I am relieved to know that my students are on these different levels and I can manage the classroom all the more better.

There is a time for management, assessments and prompting. The more organization you have the more students will respect you as a teacher. If you are good at teaching you will be able to tell when a student may need some additional help. Adults are more likely to show signs of nervousness than younger generations but it is not unlikely for a young student to display nervousness.

What I have learnt from this unit are the qualities,role and responsibilies that both teachers and students should have so that the learning becomes effective. It's crucial that the teacher is able to motivate and fair to all students. The lesson should be well organised, varied and interesting. The teacher, at some stage, will have a leading role while other time a more withdrawn role but he/she should always be available for support and guidance. A learner, on the other hand, should be willing to ask questions, accept errors and be receptive and motivated . However this will depend on several factors such as age, cultural background, language level and life experience.

Unit one was very informative, especially for a novice teacher. I liked that we went over the different rolls of the teacher and what should be emphasized. The description for all of the rolls ( manager, organizer, assessor etc) really help me understand different ways to approach teaching. I also enjoyed the different age brackets and what to expect from each. It's nice to know what motivates students to learn English because that can help me teach them things they want to learn.

This was a very detailed and informative unit which touched on a number of the aspects of teaching which I had not yet considered, such as the differences between teaching adults and younger students, being aware of cultural differences and the many varying roles of a teacher. I have learned in some detail of the levels of knowlege and how important it is to make sure that learning activities are adapted to the correct level. Most importantly I learned that teaching needs to be focussed on the learner, their confidence and their motivation and that successful teaching is likely to occur through an interesting, varied and positive experience.

This unit tells us about the different Types of teachers and learners. Teachers should be awesome. I feel that to be an awesome teacher, the teacher must be kind to all the students, patient, regardless of the problem, fun, and must have knowledge of the subject. The teachers should be able to switch from one type of teacher to another in seconds, for example, he/she are participants and something bad happens, the teacher should be able to switch from being a participant to a controller, so no one gets hurt. I think that the best kind of learner is one that is enthusiastic about the subject, regardless of his or her circumstances. The student will willingly do what it takes to learn the subject, even if they dislike a particular portion of the subject. I learned that there are six different levels of language levels and where I am at on learning my own second language, I am a beginner. This unit has made me want to learn how to tell where a person is at on learning a new language.

In this unit the reader begins to gain an understanding of the classroom dynamic--the role of the teacher, and the importance of being able to assess the students. This unit describes the necessity of being a good teacher and begins to describe the effect a good teacher can have on the learning environment. It then progresses regarding the differences between adult and young language learners in the classroom so the teacher may see how to use the experiences, and personal cultures of each, to cater to each age range appropriately. This unit in short can be understood as getting to know ones audience, including self-consideration. In this unit I am reminded of how much of an impact my involvement with the students' in the classroom can impact their ability to learn, and their general motivation for participation.

The content of this unit was a good reminder of the different parts of sentences. Nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions. Although I use all of these in my daily language, it is a good overview and I learned some new things as well. I did not know what a gerund was previously. This unit had a good explanation on types of nouns, types of adjectives, the different verb forms, types of adverbs, and types of pronouns.

Although I have spend four years in a Higher Education Institution, it was necessary and important to return to the basic Parts of Speech, and dissect all of the possibilities within a sentence. Although the parts of speech can be fairly simple to learn, such as: transitive and intransitive verbs, articles, nouns, and conjunctions, many nuances are involved in speech to make it more difficult for first-time learners. Very technical aspects to parts of speech present themselves in the form of: zero articles, all the different verb tenses (infinitive, past simple, past participle, present participle), irregularities of verb forms. A final example on the complexities of verb forms materializes with the fact that the verbs "Read"" and ""Quit"" do not change in their present tense

As an adult, how quickly you forget the basics of English grammar. This unit allowed me to refresh my knowledge of 'parts of speech' and re-taught me how to identify the different sections within a sentence. One aspect I particularly enjoyed was feeling unsure and confused at times, as now I can relate to the students when they have troubles grasping the content.

In this unit I had a good refresher course of the different parts of speech and grammar. Going over some of the unit I realised how much of the language I use everyday but have forgotten the Name or reason that made my idea of a correct English sentence. I am now confident in my ability to correctly label and explain parts of speech.

Unit two covered the parts of speech. Nouns (countable and uncountable), verbs, adjectives (comparative, superlative, etc.), adverbs, gerunds, prepositions, articles(definite and indefinite), conjunctions,pronouns are just some of the examples of parts of speech. It is important to be familiar with these parts of speech as an English teacher, because outside of kindergarten, a teacher will need to have at least a basic understanding of grammar, otherwise the students may not have sufficient confidence in the teacher.

This unit teaches us about the different parts of speech. As native English speakers, we often do not realize the meanings each word possesses. Each word in a sentence can be classified further, which can add more emphasis to its meaning. From this unit, I have come to realize that as I read the rules for each part of speech, I realized how some of the rules can be a little confusing to students learning English as a second language. As a native English speaker, I was not even aware of some of the rules because I felt like it was something that we just knew how to do.

I found this unit very informative as at times the subject of grammar can be quite confusing for both the teacher and the student. Many times we take for granted the grammar we are brought up with and trying to explain it or offer explanations of various rules and forms can be trying to say the least. I thought this unit was quite clear and easy to understand and answered many questions I had as far as teaching these different parts of speech.

In this lesson I learned a great deal about the intricacies of grammar in the English language. I remember learning some of this when I was in grade school, but as stated in the lesson, much of it we do without even thinking about it. Some of the terms were new to me such as gerund and superlative adjective. I enjoyed gaining a new understanding of my native language.

This unit is an extensive introduction to the parts of speech of the English language, explaining what they are, how they are classified, and how these divisions within a part of speech are differentiated from each other. Certain basic parts of speech (such as noun, adjective, verb, adverb) should be familiar terms to any native English speaker, but the minute details of their types (specific vocabulary terms) and the rules for using them are not things of which native speakers tend to be consciously aware. Therefore my view is that the purpose of this unit is to give this conscious awareness to English teachers, so that they will not only produce correct English, but also know why it is correct. This is, of course, also to say that an English teacher who understands the content of this unit is also in a better position to catch mistakes and to know why they are mistakes.

I have learned to recognise the different parts of speech and classifying it is a first part of grammar. A sentence must consist of at least a subject and verb but usually feature more words than this. The different Nouns (Countable and Uncountable), Adjectives (Comparitive and Superlative) Articles ( Definite and Indefinite), Verbs (Transitive or Intransitive) plays a big role. English verbs have four principal forms - base form, past simple, past participle and present participle. Also that auxiliary verbs form a tense of an expression by combining with present or past participles or infinitives of other verbs. I have also learned the five main types of adverbs: Manner, Place, Time, degree and Frequency. Also that a Gerund is the -ing form of a verb used as a noun. There are four different types of Pronouns which are Personal, Possessive, Reflexive and Relative. Prepositions main types are Time/Date, Movement and Place/position. Also that Conjunctions join words or groups in a sentence.
