I learned in this section that it is very important not only to really understand the students' and how they are learning but also to analyze yourself as a teacher. Because the way you teach and motivate and correct students affects their learning, it is important to be aware of how you are going about that. Furthermore, this section outlined many different ways of teaching and motivating students and that was a helpful and reassuring start. I also learned about the different Types of learners, by age as well as ability and that allowed me to gauge what type of learners I might want to work with in the future. If students are struggling, I think it would be better to ask the question, what do my students need from me to be better learners?

The introduction to this course provided a good place to begin learning about how to teach english to speakers of other languages. It makes me recognize the characteristics of teachers and students that may most help and detract the latter from learning a new language. I am glad to be able to not the differences between teaching adults and children, from students who are older and often more motivated to learn to others who are younger and are more open to diverse teaching styles and methods. I am also glad to be able to recognize the knowledge levels of English that my students are at. A good teacher is enthusiastic, patient, kind, knowledgeable in the subject, hold rapport with students, and is able to correct students without making them feel self conscious. A good student is motivated and willing to learn, open to critique, and open to ask questions. It also distinguished between the language level of learners a teacher may be presented with, and spoke on the difference between young learners and adult learners. Some differences between young and adult learners are that adult learners often participate in classes voluntarily and through personal choice while young learners are often required to take language classes and young learners do not have as many preconceived notions of what learning entails.

I learned more about the comparative adjective, transitive verb and superlative and comparative adjective. While going to school those terms were not used when I was in school. I was a little confused at first. After reading the unit I understood exactly what the unit was explaining. Unit 2 looks at the grammatical break down of sentence structure in the English language. It begins with the nouns and noun categories and goes on to explain verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, prepositions, adverbs, gerunds, and pronouns. Each grammatical category is defined and explained using examples and areas where students are shown to have particular difficulty. I learned how to teach and explain the different parts of speech. How to give easy examples that people can understand, how to teach in order the different parts of the sentence. This unit taught me how to separate the different types of prepositions, pronouns, etc to be able to teach them better.

This unit was about the parts of speech and sentence structures. It broke down sentences into their most basic elements and explained what each piece did. I learned a lot from this section because I was unaware of the actual names of the parts of speech. I never really thought about them, but I can see how this will benefit me in my lessons. Unit two was far more challenging than unit one. I believe this to be because it dealt with the mechanics of the English language (which is complicated) rather than merely providing examples of relationships, as in unit one. What I found challenging was trying to imagine what would be the easiest way to explain these parts of speech to a foreign speaking individual, particularly when there are examples which stray from the rules! Having covered most of this work in my own schooling career it was relatively easy to familiarize myself with the mechanics of the language once more. I find it a challenge working through a sentence to identify the various parts of speech and that's why I love it!
