In this unit I have learned the attributes that make both a good learner and a good teacher. This unit encouraged me to examine what I find to be the most important dispositions of a teacher, and to evaluate how I meet (or may need to work on) these key dispositions. Ultimately, I found that the most important teaching dispositions (in my mind) are (1) a desire to teach, particularly as teaching relates to practical application (teaching flesh-and-blood students), as opposed to the theory of the thing (theoretical pedagogies); and (2) a command of and enjoyment of the subject (so as to inspire students to want to and desire to learn the topic). I came to these conclusions by examining my experiences as a student, my experiences observing practicing teachers, and my experiences tutoring students in the past. Further, this unit helped me to look at more concretely the levels of language learning (beginner, elementary, etc.)--by reading about these broad levels (and by researching a bit more outside of the context of this classroom), I feel that I will be better-equipped to recognize these levels in my students and to adapt my teaching methods accordingly and appropriately.

Having taught Before it is extremely useful to reflect on the different roles of a teacher, as well as personality traits of a teacher. I know that personally I am good at building rapport, but sometimes have difficulty with high energy motivation of students. I also know that I prefer to act as a prompter, and that is one of my strengths. I have never had trouble drawing out additional answers from students, or asking more in depth questions to encourage conversation.

From this lesson, I've learned the importance of learner-teacher relationships. As a teacher, I am required to evaluate classroom situations and choose a relevant role. Roles include Manager, Organizer, Assessor, Prompter, and Participant among others. Learners will be at different levels of language knowledge: Beginner, Basic, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced. Age also plays a factor when understanding learners' motivation, experience, and behavior. Motivation can be a false, sort of forced presence at younger ages, but ideally leaners are motivated to advance their career, travel the world or meet friends, or out of pure linguistic interest. Older learners can be set back by their fixed expectations of teachers and/or can be less receptive to new language skills.

One final part is about the levels of learning from the basic and little or no knowledge to the experts. I feel like i HAVE learnt a lot about student teacher relations. I feel that this section also clarifies the different methods of teaching in different exercises. I feel like the test did not focus as much on the different kind of learners you will encounter in a classroom. In this lesson I learned the different levels of student learning; as well what different students motivations, experiences and behaviors are. I also learned about the different roles we have as teachers and in which context we need to use these rules. Finally I learned what factors make for a good student and what makes a good teacher. A good learner is one who asks questions, is willing to learn, is interested in the language, and accepts error correction to further their language skills. I think the unit 1 content has been a good introduction to the possible pitfalls and successes one can have while teaching, especially abroad, and a foreign language at that. While the material doesn't get specific about problems and solutions the information presented gives you an idea of what issues could come up. I'm thinking about how I would deal with an unmotivated student or a student who is dominating the classroom. How would I increase my own motivation? I think this lesson gives a broad stroke to teaching English abroad and is making me do some critical thinking of my own about what kind of teacher I would like to be.

I still have difficulty understanding transitive and intransitive verbs, so that is an area in which I must improve. I have noticed that a couple points of frustration for English Language students are how to use adjectives and adverbs, and how to use pronouns. I learned about both of these in Unit 2. Firstly, the unit gave a simple rule to order adjectives. It said to order adjectives by size, age, color, material and finish with the noun. I know there are more adjective types than this list, but it suggested forming them into a sentence that sounds natural, then creating a rule to follow. I think this will be very helpful for students, once they are in a level high enough to listen for the natural order of adjectives. Students who are low intermediate and below will not recognize the order on their own, but that's where my modeling will come into play. The article also mentioned several different types of adverbs. Adverbs can be used to denote manner, place, time, degree, frequency, comment (attitude), linking, viewpoint, and adding or limiting. I would have liked to see more on this subject, but I will be able to research it on my own. This unit, I think that it was a very good review of basic grammar. I learn that even native speakers, sometimes, have difficulties teaching grammar and that makes me more relaxed. I love grammar, since I think that is the base of any language even though English grammar is quite difficult because of so many exceptions to the rules. The most important thing that I am taking away from this lesson is the names of the different grammatical tools that we all use on a daily basis without really understanding why. I always attempt to use intelligently crafted sentences that are grammatically correct I have learned a great deal from this section. Nouns,Verbs, Adjectives, etc. are difficult to section as your learning the language and to see that many have their own subgroups makes it even harder. however, I have learned much by reading this unit and has done a fantastic job refreshing my memory.

Having a strong understanding of the basics of sentence structure is important. Being able to identify and differentiate the parts of speech is important in order to fully explain English to a learning student. Remembering the subtle differences, as well as the exceptions to the rules are also necessary. Since English is my first language, I forget the subtle rules I use that are common place for me. Having a refresher of the parts of speech have reminded me that even though it makes sense for me to speak in a particular way, it doesn't mean that the rules for speaking are simple.

Although these basic grammar topics were covered in grade school, it is easy to forget the details. In addition, going over this made me realize what a complicated language English is for the non-native speaker! There are so many irregular forms of things that simply need to be memorized and it seems very difficult. I will work hard to give my students a strong knowledge of the basics so that they can build upon this for the rest of their English-learning career.

It was far better than I learned in school because I had to think about it and resolve it myself. In doing that I have a much greater understanding of my own language and I know I can help others. The only problem I had was with the prepositions as it was very confusing to me and I think I made a mistake on the test. Much of this unit was a review for me. The discussion of the particular order of adjectives was interesting. Intuitively, it made sense to me, but I never really broke it down to a formula. I feel like I will learn a lot about the English language just by observing the process that others follow in learning it. It is important to be able to quickly identify and explain the basic grammar covered in this lesson to students. We learned easy to identify rules, like adding "-er"" or ""-est"" to comparative or superlative adjectives with three or more syllables. There were many more practical tips focused on classroom EFL learning that I liked This unit provided a great insight as to how the parts of speech create the modern day English language. It also aided me in proficiency as well as being able to identify the irregularities our language offers. Being able to fully understand these basic concepts allows individuals to grow as the course continues to increase in difficulty and Speed.

This unit stressed the the different parts of speech along with details about each individual part of speech. Before doing this section I knew all 8 parts of speech; however, I had not dealt with several of the specific details in many years, such as the different conjugations for verbs, various types of prepositions, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. This unit is an excellent, intensive study of English grammar. It does a good job covering a very complicated subject. After I read through it a few times, it is not a subject I would dread to teach. This unit was a great review of grammar and the different parts of speech. I learned new terms like gerund, superlative adjective, definite article, and adverb of frequency. The new terms were explained very well in the unit summary and easy to understand. This lesson was very helpful and I plan on using the information as a reference for future use.

Unit 2 addressed the parts of a sentence. It defined and described each, giving examples and exceptions. What I found interesting was that there are soft rules that natives speakers use, and most of us are completely unaware until we hear them in a sentence that does not follow the "rule"". Basically, I have learnt about 9 key parts of speech from this unit, that is, nouns (countable nouns and uncountable nouns), adjectives (comparatives and superlatives), Articles (definite, indefinite and zero), verbs (transitive and intransitive), adverbs, gerunds, pronouns (personal, possessive, reflexive, relative), prepositions and conjunctions. The most interesting things that I have learnt from this unit are rules, such as a special rule (sequence) will be applied if there are multiple adverbs appear at one time (1. place 2. manner 3. time). Another very useful rule refers to how to arrange multiply adjectives in the right order in a sentence (1. size 2. age 3. color 4. material 5 noun). The fact is that there are still some difficulties in teaching English grammar in either English or chinese. I used to be an adult English teacher and my job was about teaching student?s IELTS, grammar and vocabulary at that time. The way of how I teach my students was quite mechanical actually, such as show (grammar rules) + practice (sentence structures). Additionally, sometimes I found that I only present and explain all the rules of a certain grammar item at one time and then assign some corresponding exercise for memorization and consolidation. It lacks of flexibility. This way of grammar teaching was not as effective as I expected although a large quantity of efforts in my teaching process has been taken. Therefore, through learning this unit I have realized the significance of learning a more accurate and effective approach of teaching English grammar. Since learners will be more likely encountering trouble in conveying and expressing ideas without knowing or understanding the grammar rules of the language. ", Again

Although I am a native English speaker I was pleasantly surprised from the grammatical review I received from this unit. I was able to gain a more thorough knowledge of what exactly each part of speech was. Since I am also currently teaching it helped to provide me with more information for teaching my own class. Really great review! There are only two kinds of article in the English Language A and The. Nouns are the names of places, people or things. Adjectives are describing words. Verbs are doing words. Adverbs add meaning or information to the action quality or state denoted by an adverb. Pronouns are used in place of nouns. Conjunctions are joining words. I found this section to be very informative. I thought it was clear and concise with explaining the definitions of parts of speech. I learned a lot about nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions. I look forward to learning more about grammar as I move further alone in the course.
