This unit was very informative about the expectations of how a teacher's character should be portrayed. I enjoyed learning about different student behavior and ideas of what makes both teacher and student successful. I found the section on learners to be particularly interesting because there was a wide range of ideas on different learners such as the difference between young learners and adult learners. I also related my experience with learning to certain ideas such as the language awareness concept. I too have experience learning a new language and trying to match that language with my native language. I had to learn to separate concepts I associated with my native language from the language I was trying to learn.

This unit helped my ground myself in the overarching subject. Instead of getting into the nitty-gritty details of how the english language is to be taught, it instead defined the character traits of strong teachers and strong learners and what to expect from both. Also, it distinguished, on a very basic level, what to expect from student from different age groups and how their age and experience will translate into their motivation to learn and their ability to learn a new language. Furthermore, the unit helped establish the very basic language levels that we can expect upon entering the field (eg. beginner, elementary, intermediate, etc.), as well as the six stages of the framework established in Europe, which I did not previously know. Finally, on the most basic level, this unit helped me start the course optimistically and reminded me of why I am doing this in the first place.

I believe that this Unit did an excellent job covering the basics of student-teacher interaction. This unit introduces a variety of topics. It begins by explaining the different roles a teacher must play in order to be effective. Teachers must manage their roles depending on the subject currently being taught and be able to switch from one role to another seamlessly while giving a lesson. A good teacher does not stand in front of the classroom and talk the entire time but facilitates activities and encourages student participation while constantly monitoring, evaluating, and giving feedback to students. I also learned the difference between the ages of learners. There are different categories of young learners and all must be instructed in different ways, taking care to attend to the specific needs of each age group. Adult learners are usually more motivated and easier to relate to but are also less flexible when trying new activities. Finally, I also learned about the different language levels in general and also the categories used by the Common european Framework. Students in each of these levels have specific needs and lessons need to be planned that are appropriate for the ability level of students being instructed. Overall, I learned that as an English instructor, I have many roles to play. I also know that I need to be observant of my students' language level, personalities, and age groups so I can plan appropriate and effective lessons. The most important aspect of teaching is making sure your students are making progress and are motivated to continue learning.

This course unit focused on the relationship between the teacher and student. It described the qualities of a good teacher and the different roles that a teacher may take on when appropriate. It also lists the possible motivations for students to learn English in addition to the different factors of a students learning. Adults may be more motivated than younger students, but they also can be nervous about taking risks and uncomfortable in learning environments they are unfamiliar with. Younger students are more flexible. This course also broke down the criteria for different language levels which is useful when assessing students. I primarily thought about how a teacher must be a motivator by thinking about my own learning experiences. When I always felt corrected or when the teacher couldn't answer my question, I felt much less motivated. A teacher should try to be balanced and fair. A teacher should also be honest and help the student's learning by researching unknown answers.

Next, it deals with the factors that may influence the language learning, such as the age of the learner (young learners vs. adults), his/her learning experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, behaviour problems, life experience and cultural differences (L1 and L2). Finally, it classifies different levels of language learners : beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced. Having read the content of this unit, I feel that it is imperative for a good teacher to be able to motivate his/her students. Also, a good teacher should possess an abundant subject knowledge in order to transfer it on his/her students. I thought that the unit was very well written and I was able to relate to behaviors of students and was able to understand better all the steps a teacher has to make in different situations. I found this unit helpful in explaining the different roles a teacher can take during a lesson. It is a good explanation of the uses of being a controller versus a facilitator. I like that it emphasized that we should sometimes step back and let the students take over for themselves, or opposite sit down and participate. It was helpful in my understanding of my own teaching.

A good teacher cares about teaching content well. Good teachers have desirable personal qualities such as being kind and patient, lively, entertaining, love for teaching and ability to motivate. They have good subject knowledge and be able to establish good rapport with students and create a learning environment that is nurturing and inclusive. The teacher's role depends on the learning goals to be achieved and the Type of activities designed, and whether lessons are teacher-centred or student-centred. Thus, a teacher may move between roles such as controller, organiser, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model and observer or monitor. Teachers are to encourage and Foster learners' attributes such as motivation to learn, willingness to ask questions and experiment with the language, and being able to reflect on their learning process and methods. Adult learners tend to have a fixed view of how teaching should be carried out, which can make them less receptive to new learning methods. Also, their past success or failure in learning can influence their belief on current learning. However they tend to be highly motivated learners and pose little behaviour problems. They can be more nervous in a new learning experience. They are more likely to be concerned with 'loss of face' and anxious about success. Teachers need to be more gentle, encouraging while helping to build confidence. With more life experience, adult learners contribute to a more varied and interesting learning environment. It's easier to build rapport and have interesting discussions. young learners, on the other hand, tend to be amenable to new learning experiences and methods. Although they can be less motivated, a caring teacher should try to build confidence and encouragement motivated by having lessons that are varied, fun and interesting, using lots of visuals. Being young, they are able to absorb language from context and usage just like the way they acquire their own language. However, it can be restrictive as it is difficult to communicate with them in English. Another difficulty in teaching young learners is that they have shorter attention spans, which may also pose behaviour problems in the classroom. Generally, Asians tend to be very serious about learning and respectful to teachers. However, they can be passive and unwilling to communicate, sometimes lacking in creativity in approach to learning. There are 5 levels of language learners: - Beginners have no to very basic knowledge of English. - Elementary students are able to form basic sentences and communicate on simple topics. - Pre-intermediate students are likely to make many errors with basic structures, but are able to understand and communicate on a greater variety of topics, but lack fluency and accuracy. - Intermediate students still lack accuracy and fluency, but are able to understand and communicate on a wide range of topics using limited range of vocabulary . - Upper intermediate students able to communicate on almost all topics using a greater range of vocabulary, but still lacks accuracy. - Advanced students have a very good knowledge of the English language and will be able to move on to more subtle language items. Visuals are used mainly in fun lessons with lower levels of language learners. Communication can be restrictive and students are not likely to ask complicated grammar questions. Mid level learners are able to communicate on a greater range of topics and tend to be more motivated. However, success can be difficult to measure and mistakes ingrained earlier are difficult to correct. Higher levels learners are very motivated, but some may feel frustrated as they may not see much progress having reached a plateau. Teachers need to encouragement them more in taking greater responsibility for their learning. Good teachers result in good students!

This unit was a good reminder of the various terms used in grammar. All of the concepts are usually known by native speakers, but after school we (or at least I) tend to forget the actual terminology used. This was a nice review for things like definite (the) and indefinite articles (a/an), abstract nouns (such as beauty or intelligence), transitive (followed by an object) and intransitive (cannot be followed directly by an object) verbs, and some grammar points that are still a little confusing for me so I will have to do some further research (infinitives, auxiliary verbs, and gerunds).

This unit reviews, or introduces for some, the parts of speech. I remember these from school and have been teaching them for a while now, so it wasn't new information for me. But, I did have to review the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs and was reminded that the difference is more than transitive meaning an action verb; a direct object is necessary as well. I have no idea why parts of speech are intimidating for some people. Hopefully future units will help me be more sensitive to this concept.

I learned a little bit about grammar that I didn't already know. Specifically I learned about gerunds often coming after prepositions and the difference between a transitive and intransitive verb. The rest I already knew but I enjoyed the refresher anyways. It was nice to refresh some of the more common past tense verb forms and the rules regarding the order of adjectives.
