In this unit we were provided with two videos. The first one was a demonstration of what should not be done by a teacher. The second video was an excellent example of good teaching. The teacher was smiling and interested in the students. He used their names and commended them for their good answers and their efforts. He made the class interesting by using gestures and mimes. He also used pictures and a drawing to make it more understandable for the students. The students felt comfortable and were motivated to learn.Ultimately, I felt this lesson could have been more. While explaining the advantages and disadvantages of textbooks has merit, this unit could and probably should have been expanded to include modern technology resources. Given the the ubiquity of smartphones and abundance of web 2.0 tools, the resources and activities available to teachers has grown exponentially. Students can create videos with dynamic CGI effects with astounding simplicity, or play games that target various grammar and language structures online.
