This unit covered the different methods of evaluating students' abilities. The diagnostic test gauges their ability at the beginning of the course, whereas the placement test uses the same kind of information to help the school group the students based on their relative abilities. Progress tests allow the instructors to observe the progress of the students over time, which allows them to more effectively tailor their lesson plans to accomodate the students. Finally, the practice tests are given in a language school to prepare the students for external exams in english certification. The unit also provided a brief overview of several of the most common external exams, like the TOEFL test and the Cambridge exams. This unit was an effect overview, and made me more aware of how English certification works on the external exams, a process of which I had little prior knowledge.
