Chongqing is a thriving city in southwest China and is home to over 18 million people. Located on the Yangzi River, the city is an important manufacturing base and industrial center and has served as the capital of the country three times over its three thousand year history.

More recently, the city has become a popular destination with tourists from elsewhere in China and increasingly with international visitors too. One of the main draws is Chongqing’s spicy cuisine which makes extensive use of Sichuan pepper. The most famous dish is Chongqing hot pot which is served in thousands of restaurants around the city and even has a whole festival devoted to it. Other attractions include a number of museums, shopping malls, amusement parks and zoo. Chongqing is the gateway to the Three Gorges area and there is plenty to see outside the city such as the ancient temple complex of Baidicheng or three natural limestone bridges spanning the Yangshui River.

Getting around the city is relatively easy with metro, bus and monorail services available. The international airport links the city with major destinations around the world including Los Angeles and London and the air, road and rail network connects Chongqing with the rest of the country.

  • What does the tuition for the program include?

    Deposits for the course must be paid to our administrative centre. The fastest and cheapest way to pay is by credit/debit card but we also accept payment via Pay Pal and bank transfer.

    All course related services are included in the course fees and you won’t be asked to pay additional costs for these. This also includes course moderation and accreditation fees as well as our lifetime job placement guidance and basic services.

    The balance of the course fees is to be paid in cash or by credit card to the training center before the first day of your course.

  • What is an average program day like?

    Class time is generally 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, with mid morning and afternoon breaks and a lunch break. There will be a mixture of workshops, real classroom observation and in-classroom teaching practice supported by the trainer or experienced teachers.

  • How many students on average are in the program each month?

    The classes range from eight to twelve students with the maximum being fifteen. Most participants are from America, Australia, Britain and Canada but we also accept non-native speakers with high proficiency in English.

  • What are the teaching practice students and classes like?

    Our students in the teaching practice sessions are local Chinese students. Students are more than happy to be used for teaching practice and are eager to attend.

  • What is the program accommodation like? Where is it located?

    You can stay at a guesthouse in a private room with AC, cable TV and other basic facilities. The place is about 5 minutes away from the school on foot.

  • What is the TEFL job market in Chongqing like? Will I have trouble getting a job?

A pleasant, small 2 to 3 bedroom house in Chongqing City is about US$ 400 to 700 per month. Apartments are available for more. It is fair to say that TEFL teachers are very well-paid by local standards in Chongqing, which means they can afford a comfortable standard of living.

  • What do I do if I get sick in Chongqing? Are there western-standard medical facilities?

    Chongqing is just a 40-minute taxi ride from the airport. A metered taxi charges approximately around RMB 100 to the city center whether the guesthouse and the school are located.

  • What documents do I need to bring?

    Please bring your resume/CV because the school will require this in the teaching practice. When you secure work you may be asked to provide originals and copies of your college degrees and transcripts. You might also consider obtaining an international driving permit if driving in Chongqing. PLEASE BRING ALONG COPIES OF YOUR PASSPORT AND VISA ON YOUR FIRST DAY OF THE COURSE FOR REGISTRATION.

  • What’s the climate like? What kind of clothing do I need to bring?

    Known as one of the three furnaces in China, Chongqing has a humid sub-tropical climate with very long and very hot summers. The humidity is the highest of any other city in China, and the temperatures get up to 35°C (95°F) in the built-up areas. Though the temperatures are very high, the city experiences a great deal of cloud cover, though this is much less in the summer than in the winter. The winters are shorter and are not too cold, with low temperatures of around 6°C (43°F). The city of Chongqing is also notoriously foggy, with fog for about 100 days each year, which can be hard to deal with! The poor air quality can be a significant problem for some people, as the pollution can be damaging to your health if you are staying there for a long time.
