I have really learnt a lot of awareness of what I am expected to do in class to keep an active, lively and enjoyable class.Knowing that the students are as important to the teacher as the lesson is,I will strike a balance to ensure that enough time is given them to actively take part in the class and I will devote a little time to explaining the basic concepts that they need to understand on a given topic.Being around the students offering useful suggestions, encouragements and help to ensure they doon't lose interest is a useful role of a teacher.I like the course.

Overall this unit explains the difference between the teacher and the learner, and the different levels of teaching. I've learned that there are different ways to teach such as being a model or a controller. I've also learned about what makes a good teacher as well as what makes a good learner. People from around the world want to learn english for many reasons like for school, work, traveling, or just out of the interest of the language. Motivating the student is one of the biggest keys to being successful in being a good teacher.

to lack of sufficient correction is also a possibility. This is only one example among many of how difficult I believe it is to strike a balance between the teacher and the learner in the classroom. Being able to adapt to the various roles in the classroom as well as varying levels of fluency among students is a task that I am not yet able to sufficiently carry out. In the end

Reading this unit, I have understood what it takes to be a good teacher, the most important qualities I must possess to ensure the students receive the best possible understanding & knowledge of the English language. The different duties or roles I will need to play and why they are important to the student. How to look out for the good qualities in a good learner, to use them & help him/her advance. I feel that after reading this unit, It is a career that I am interested in, after using my own personal experience of being a student in a foreign country, I can relate to both the good outcome of being a patient, kind, interesting, well motivated teacher & the outcome of a teacher that clearly isn't interested in his/her work. I know which one I would like to be.

Unit 1 describes the relationship between a teacher and students. The level of motivation and effectiveness in an ESL classroom is based on the various roles of the teacher and his or her qualities. Also, the effectiveness of an ESL class is dependent on various factors which affect student's learning and motivation. I have learned the importance differences between teaching adults and young learners. Also, the importance of understanding the various students' language levels in the classroom.

In this unit I have learned the basic language levels of English students as well as the differents role a teacher must have (manager, organiser, assessor, prompter, participant, facilitator, tutor, monitor and model). Also, depending on the age group a student is in, it was interesting to see a little of their different motivations and behaviours. Having had some experience teaching a mixed group of young learners and adults, I found this particularly interesting.

In order to be a successful teacher, one must be knowledgable about the attributes it takes to be both a good teacher and learner. A good teacher is aware of both the content that needs to be taught as well as the needs of each student. Teachers play various roles, such as moderator, manager, prompter, etc. A good teacher knows when to use each of these roles in a classroom. There are many levels of students - beginner, elementary, low, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. Each of these students are able to communicate on different levels, so it is important for teachers to be aware what level their students are in order to most effectively teach them. Students take English classes for various reasons. young learners may be forced by parents to take classes, whereas older learners may decide to take English in order to advance in their career, prepare to travel, or just for the sake of learning a new language. A good teacher can assess all of these things and therefore know how to properly teach and motivate his or her class.

Basically, the first unit of the course describes the relationship between learners and the teachers in its whole complexity and importance. The reader can find some ideas about what constitutes a good teacher. There are listed several roles of the teacher along with description of what they involve and examples of behavior in the class - being a good teacher requires knowing which role to take and when. On the other hand, the unit shows some factors that make a good learner, giving some characteristics of successful students. The chapter also mentions some reasons why people attend English classes as well as explains why motivation is important while learning a foreign language. Additionally, we can find the whole breakdown of English knowledge levels together with brief description of language skills possessed by the students of each stage. Being aware of those distinctions can be very helpful while teaching students of various levels as in each case the teacher needs to adapt the activities to a student?s or a group?s skills/knowledge/abilities respectfully. ", This unit focused on the various roles of the teacher as well as the role of the learner. The teacher plays many roles from manager to organizer to model. These different roles when used appropriately will contribute to the success of the lesson. It is important that teachers know when to switch to each role. As a learner

What I took away most from this lesson was that the mark of the best teachers and learners comes in desire. A good teacher can only be a good teacher if he or she loves his or her job. And a good student will stay motivated if encouraged but overall they have to want to learn in order to be taught. Teaching and learning is a two way street and it seems that while every age group has it's own set of difficulties, they all have equally rewarding opportunities as well. I believe that while all aspects of teaching and qualities of good teachers, the most important are model and organizer because students may only see and hear English while in the classroom (especially if teaching abroad) and organization of lessons and the class is particularly important to coherent lessons.

Unit 1 discusses the makings of both good teachers and good learners. Variables such as age and cultural backgrounds are noted and we are encouraged as teachers in the lesson to think through the ramifications of these variables, though for the most part, discussion of how to deal with difficulties these variables might bring to the teaching/learning experience are left for future units. While many variables in all these categories are brought up, we must remember that some characteristics of good teachers are inherent to a teacher's personality, and some of them a good teacher can take upon themselves to develop. The same idea can be true of a good learner as well. Still the ideas is clear that in order to have an ideal English learning environment, you need both a good teacher, and good learners. Also, we're reminded that there are various levels of learning a language, and that sometimes different systems might use different names for what are generally the same range of levels.

I've already written assignment Type answers for the end of unit worksheet in which I summarise all the unit's content, I hope it's okay to submit this. If not I will of course be willing to write a separate overview. Task 1 ? List 5 qualities that a ?good? teacher should have and give reasons for your choices. Which of these qualities do you consider to be more important, and why? 1. A good teacher should be kind and patient ? I believe if you are empathetic and patient with students it will make them feel cared about and supported which will boost their confidence in turn making their learning more successful. 2. A good teacher should be lively and entertaining ? I?ve always found that being confident and enthusiastic really helps build a rapport with learners. Being able to provide varied, interesting and fun activities of course works especially well for younger students but as I found during my experience as a mature student, also kept older learners engaged and interested. I think if you obviously enjoy teaching, this attitude is contagious and rubs off on your students increasing their motivation. 3. A good teacher has a good subject knowledge ? Having a really sound knowledge of your subject will not only ensure that lessons are informative, productive and delivered efficiently but also that your students will have trust and confidence in you. They will therefore be more likely to participate and put in the required effort. 4. A good teacher should be able to involve all students equally throughout the lesson ? I believe this is a very necessary skill as all students differ so much in their learning styles, personalities, abilities and motivation. It is therefore vital to use varied teaching methods and activities during any given lesson. You must also make sure you?re fair and consistent when asking for participation or input. 5. A good teacher should be able to correct students without offending them or affecting their motivation ? This I feel is vitally important in order that students learn and progress at a steady pace. The teacher needs to, be sensitive to the student?s personality and how they may react to being corrected, give positive advice and / or constructive criticism and provide support in a fair, consistent and thoughtful manner. When I think back to my education and when I consider all the teachers I?ve met during my work as a T.A, the teachers I think of as ?the best? all had qualities 1, 2 and 3 in common. I believe being kind and caring, lively and interesting and having a sound knowledge of one?s subject will ensure a teacher will get the full potential from his/ her students whilst they in turn enjoy their learning experience. Task 2 ? State what you consider to be the 5 most important roles of a teacher. Describe each role and say why you think it is important. 1. Organiser ? During the lesson this involves, giving instructions, organising students into groups/ pairs, initiating activities, bringing them to a close and organising feedback. It?s important because it helps the lesson run smoothly, optimises time and avoids unnecessary confusion for the students. 2. Assessor ? A teacher is required to evaluate and assess student?s progress, grading them and giving feedback in a fair and consistent manner. I believe this is important because students that are sensitively supported in their learning feel comfortable and will progress forward. 3. Prompter ? This is when a teacher decides to gently and carefully encourage the student along if they get stuck for ideas or a word or lose the thread. This needs to be done without taking the initiative from the learner. I think this is important to help boost confidence and make the learner feel supported so they?ll then feel happy to contribute during communicative activities. 4. Tutor ? This refers to guiding and supporting students when they?re working either individually, in pairs or in small groups. All though he teacher should be careful not to intrude too often you?ll frequently need to stop the activity in order to give encouragement/ constructive criticism. Great care must be taken to ensure equal attention is given to all. I feel this is a very important role as it gives a personal touch helping students feel valued and recognised, which then encourages confidence and motivation. 5. Model ? As a native English speaker the teacher should be the source of all knowledge and an authority on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation they are therefore responsible for passing this knowledge on as effectively and faithfully as possible. This is important so that the student benefits directly from your knowledge and understanding in the greatest way, speeding up and maximizing their learning and success. Task 3 ? List 5 qualities you would expect to find in a ?good? learner. Which of these qualities do you consider to be more important, and why? 1. A desire to learn. 2. A willingness to listen to the language. 3. A desire to experiment with the language. 4. A willingness to ask questions. 5. An acceptance of error correction. From my experiences both as a T.A in an international English school and as a learner of a second language, after the desire to learn I believe a willingness to listen and experiment with the new language are the most important qualities in order to fully absorb it. Practice, after all, makes perfect! Task 4 ? What are some of the major differences you would expect to find between adult and young learners? 1. Motivation ? Whereas adults normally decide for themselves to further their learning and so will usually be quite self-motivated, younger learners will usually have had the decision made for them. This may mean they lack motivation and will require more encouragement. 2. Nervousness ? Younger learners may sometimes be reserved and slow to participate but adults are generally much more nervous about the whole learning experience, worrying about embarrassing themselves, losing face and about their own success. 3. Language awareness ? Adults will often try and compare / match the rules of the new language to their native tongue in comparison young learners tend to absorb a new language through context and everyday use much as they acquired their own language. 4. Behaviour problems ? Adults have a greater attention span than younger learners and are also self-motivated so there should be very few behavioural problems. Youngsters on the other hand need more discipline and encouragement and need to be kept motivated and interested through various teaching methods and activities. 5. Life experience ? Adults of course have much life experience to bring to the classroom making discussions more interesting and varied, they can sometimes be reluctant to share though. Young learners might have much less experience but I?ve found are often more uninhibited and keen to share. 6. Learning experience ? Where as adults will usually have very fixed ideas on teaching methods due to their prior learning experience younger students are likely to be much more open minded. Adults also have a history of success and failure that can influence their learning outcome. Task 5 ? List the levels of language ability that learners are often grouped into and give a brief summation of each level. Beginners ? Having zero knowledge to a very basic level. Elementary ? Students are able to form simple sentences and communicate on simple topics. Low/pre?intermediate ? Students are able to communicate on and understand a greater variety of topics but lack general fluency/language awareness and will still make many mistakes. Intermediate ? Students are able to understand and communicate on a wide range of topics but with only limited vocabulary. Still lacking in accuracy and fluency. Upper intermediate ? Students should be able to communicate easily on almost all topics using a wide range of vocabulary. Will still make some mistakes. Advanced ? Students will possess a very good command of the language and will now be studying the more subtle language nuances. Task 6 ? Give as many reasons as possible why students are motivated to study English. ? For future career prospects. ? For career promotion. ? To improve business opportunities. ? For travel purposes. ? To study or live abroad. ? As preparation for exams/ to improve grades. ? For access to a better standard of education. ? To improve fluency. ? For better communication with colleagues, friends or partners. ? For conversational skills. ? Out of a desire to learn foreign languages. ? For immigration purposes. ? To meet new people. ", I have read all the information given and I must say that I have actually learnt a lot from the unit. I have gained more knowledge on the roles of the teacher and on the types of people a teacher might teach to as well., As I have read all the information given

The relationship between learners and teachers is crucial. Teachers must use varied means to teach and must know WHEN is the appropriate time to use each means. There is no cookie cutter approach. Teachers must take the time to know their students well in order to teach well. In a way, a teacher must become all things to all people. Motivation is crucial to the learning process. Teachers must do what they can to motivate students to learn.

I've been in management positions for the past several years, and I see quite a correlation between the roles of student/teacher and manager/employee. It is my experience, and I see it reflected in this chapter, that it is very important to understand your students - their level of learning, their level of experience, their motivation for learning - and to use that knowledge to engage and inspire them in a way that makes them want to learn. The relationship between teacher and student is almost as important as the information being taught.

This unit details the roles and qualities of teachers and their students in the English learning classroom. In order to effectively teach English and bring out the best from students, a teacher should be aware of his/her many roles in the classroom. This unit helps teachers understand their role in motivating and instructing the different levels of English learners. I have learned about these different roles, particularly the importance of balancing these roles and not relying too heavily on one over another. I have learned about how both teacher and students create a learning environment, either a positive or negative one depending on their behavior and perspectives. Understanding the qualities of a good teacher, and putting them into practice, is one of my key takeaways from Unit 1.

It is important to know the teacher's characteristics and roles at every lesson, how to deal with it according to the lesson objectives; and to know what good learners are like, their language level, age and motivation, and some other elements such as their cultural background. All these aspects guarantee the effectiveness of an ESL course. this unit was a in depth view at what traits make up a good teacher, and what traits make a good student. it goes over the different styles of teaching that will be used in future employment. This unit was pretty much understandable. I learned that when teaching just standing there talking to the students won't help but interacting with them and making sure that feel comfortable around you will let them open up to you and they can feel free to ask questions with out hesitation .

This first unit was based on the responsibilities and roles of "good"" teachers and students. A teacher should know their roles and be able to appropriately switch between dominant or more withdrawn roles depending on the stage of the lesson. They should also recognize the types of learners in their class so as to understand how to motivate and relate better to them. There are many differences between the age levels of learners as well as language levels. A good teacher should keep lessons interesting

This unit focused on classifying teachers and learners. As an TESL teacher currently, classifying students is always a difficulty. Sometimes, a shy student may appear elementary level when their true level is intermediate. This section helped me find concrete ways to assess a student's English ability so I can better tailor my class to their needs. A good overview of teacher roles and relationships with the students. I enjoyed this unit however I already knew the information presented here. I am looking forward to the next units :).

The relationship between learners and teachers is very important. I learned that a teacher?s ability to teach influences the students? learning process and their ability to absorb, meaning that a good teacher will most likely have good students. There are many different roles that a teacher can take during a class; each role depends on the Type of activity and what the teacher wishes for the students to achieve. A teacher has to be able to switch between these roles appropriately for a more effective learning environment. On the other hand, to be a good learner, there are several methods that can help a learner to learn more effectively, such as being motivated, language awareness, good behaviour, not being nervous, etc.

Teachers & students, should become a team where there is give & take on both sides, the teacher should be team captain where he or she can be approachable if help is needed, make lessons interesting so that the students are motivated to learn. The students should want to learn also, to ask questions when not sure, also not to be afraid to make mistakes as we all learn from the mistakes, more than if we were correct all the time.

This first unity was not hard at all. I had learned that a good teacher is not the one who talks during the whole class, but the one who also let students talk and participate as well. A good teacher focuses on the students and changes the direction of the class and his/her role during the class as needed. Learns need to be motivated during all the times. They need to feel confident and comfortable so they can learn the class subjects. Although the unity content was not hard, the test got me a little confused, to be more specific, the questions 15 to 19. Overall, i believe that the information in this unity will be very useful for me.

In this lesson, I have learned that students have a variety of learning styles, and that age can be a deciding factor in the best approach for a teacher to take. Younger learners will do better with rote learning, mixed with a few pieces of music; while motivated adults will be happier to work with practical English and be more receptive to constant correction. While I understand that it is important to internalize the information, I found the memorization of different styles of teaching to be tedious and not so necessary for the future.

a good overview on the teachers role, do and dont's, refreshing and maps the relation, however points are not very clear, and not easily distinctive. I think the content of this unit could be minimized, organized rather that stretched, for example: points in What makes a good teacher, we can simply put them as follows: 1- Personal Traits Kind, patient, loves teaching, entertaining, and is able to have more rapport with the students 2- Professional Traits: A good subject knowledge, is able to motivate students, involve each equally, correcting them without being offensive, be able to know each student's weakness, and give them individual feedback when needed. I can list other points in the exam as well, but I see it would be better to work the units this way to help us focus more.

In this unit I learned many useful things. In particular, I found the section on the different roles that a teacher plays to be particularly useful. For example, when a teacher is playing the role of a prompter, they will encourage and assist a student as he works through a problem. However, A teacher must be sure that he or she does not take it too far and end up taking away the opportunity for the learner to discover the solution on his own. If a teacher continuously robs a student of personal language discovery (via excessive prompting), then it will certainly lead to decreased morale on the part of the language learner.

Unit one on teachers and learners really opened my eyes to the role of a teacher and how important it is in every country especially on influencing the leaders of the future. Being a journalist, the role of a teacher is very similar in terms of influencing and educating the audience, being patient and kind to your interviewee and having a genuine passion for the work. Having being a student from primary school right through to university, I was able to reflect back on my experiences in the classroom to the points and factors mentioned in this unit, which helped my understanding on all definitions.

Information such as the classifications of language skills are very useful in aiding the teacher in organizing lessons and expressly relates to which role a teacher should play in the classroom. Im really impressed with roles of teachers. In this unit i understood what is a good teacher and what a good teacher must do in class. How to motivate learners and what is the best way to teach. Levels of the learners and their knowledge are very important things for the teacher. How to decide to choose roles in classroom is really hard. And how to act that role is so important too.

I learned that there are many different roles an English teacher can be in the classroom from manager, tutor organizer to being an observer in the classroom. Also, I learned that different age groups define the pace of the teacher and their approach to teaching English. Moreover, each age group has their own motivations expectations and experiences and teachers need to learn to adapt to them. Furthermore, how we think and adapt to particular situations in teaching students can define how good of a teacher a person is.

I have learned from this unit that there are different Types of teachers and different things that motivate students. I personally feel that teachers should enjoy teaching, encourage students and be kind and patient. I do not think I would be a Manager/Controller type of teacher. I want to be able to provide tools to my students and interact with them as they learn. The different motivations for adults vs. young children was not something I had thought of. Adults WANT to be there and hoping to learn and better their lives and language. Children are there because an adult feels they should be, therefore, they might not always make the best listeners. I think it will be very good for me to try my hand at both adults and children and see where my best fit would be.

This unit has been clear in defining my objectives as a teacher, and how to balance out the types of activities during class time. It has also helped in defining the learning motivations of the student and examples as to why their learning may at first be inhibited (nervousness, etc). I am glad it also answered a question I was wondering about for while, which was how to determine the student level of fluency in the english language.

I am definitely feeling grateful for being a native English speaker, as I never understood the finer details of our units of speech and the intricacies of English grammar. I intend to further my learning in this area for deeper knowledge and understanding. This unit was about parts of speech. It has been interesting to look at the various parts of speech. Nevertheless, I will have to look more into it to be able to adequately teach my students. This unit covers the basic parts of speech in the English language. The basic sentence will always have a subject and an action word, or a verb. It is also common for a sentence to have an object, which is the person or thing to which the action is being applied to. Subjects and objects are typically some form of a noun. There are several types of nouns, including common nouns, proper nouns, and pronouns. Gerunds can also take place of a noun as a subject or object by combining an intransitive verb and attaching 'ing' to the end of it. Yet there are many other parts of speech that further explain what is going on in a sentence. Definite and indefinite articles are used to further describe whether a noun is anything in general or something specific. Adjectives also describe nouns, and come in the form of comparative and superlative adjectives when describing a group of nouns. Similarly, adverbs describe verbs. Verbs are either transitive or intransitive. Transitive verbs need objects, while intransitive verbs can stand alone. There are many irregular verbs in the english language that don't follow the regular rules of verb conjugation. Unfortunately students must memorize what these verbs are. Three of these irregular verbs, "be

This unit covers basic grammar and the rules accompanying the types of grammar. It was very informative and took me lot longer than I had anticipated because although I am a native English speaker, I have not studied grammar since school days some years ago and I found myself having to learn almost from the beginning again. It has certainly enabled me to appreciate how difficult it must be for speakers of other languages to learn and understand our grammar and I will be remembering this when teaching them.

Unit 2 was about grammar and the different parts to it,nouns, comparative adjectives, verbs, adverbs, etc. For we may be native English speakers don't mean that we know how to break down and explain it in this Type of form. We grow up speaking it but really was never taught all the parts to it. This unit was trying to show you not to be to scared and that it can be learn, taught and that it needs to be taught. If we don't know this we can't be English teachers and the students will loose respect for us.It taught us how to locate what words are in certain parts of the sentence like the definite article, adjective, noun, verb, preposition, definite article.

I feel that I have learned more about the parts of speech and how to break sentences down. I will need to revisit the difference between a transitive and an an intransitive verb; other than that, I feel comfortable with this part of the course. Somewhat confusing is the difference between countable and uncountable nouns. The example in the quiz refers to the Type of noun a road is. I found that confusing because, roads can be counted; however, how many roads can one actually count?

Unit 2 was an introduction to grammar and it broke down the different parts of speech. A noun names people, places and things. These can be counted and uncountable. Adjectives describe nouns. I learned that there is a certain rule for how you list adjectives. You list them by size, age, color, material and then the noun. Next were the articles. These can be indefinite such as ?a? and ?an? or definite which is represented by ?the?. Verbs are ?doing? words. There are different forms of verbs based on the tense and there are regular and irregular verbs. Most of these are learned based off of memorization. Adverbs add meaning to the action words. Gerunds are a verb ending with ?ing. Pronouns are used instead or in place of more precise nouns. Finally, prepositions and conjunctions are used to show relationships between nouns or pronouns and some other word in a sentence.
