Unit 1: Teachers and Learners gave an overview of the many roles played by teachers, as well as the many types of learners in the classroom. The broad description of the various roles of a teacher was very useful because it dispels the notion that a teacher is someone who stands and talks for the entire length of a lesson. Teaching English to non-native speakers requires a variety of techniques and while the teacher may spend some time speaking directly to the class, he or she may also act as an observer or join in an activity as a class member. Also, this unit foreshadowed content which will appear in Unit 5 regarding classroom management. While many English students are adults with clear motivations for joining a class, teachers may reach pitfalls with younger students who may have short attention spans, unclear motivations, or confidence issues. On the student end, we look at what makes a good learner. Both positive and negative qualities, it is important to know how the student things so the instructor can be a better teacher. This unit put into words several teacher and student qualities I already knew, and also introduced me to many more. Looking at the diversity of roles teachers play in a classroom gave me a sense of how versatile and engaged teachers need to be to hold the interests and maintain the motivation of their students.

Also included were different reasons why a student might decide to take a language course, and the differences between young and adult students, in terms of how they are to teach, their levels of motivation, etc. A teacher should take into account the culture of the students he/she is teaching, their level of knowledge of the language, and why they are taking the language, when making lesson plans. I learned a lot from reading about the different roles a teacher needs to fill at different times. I have also realized more fully from this unit how different an experience it would be to teach different age groups and different levels of understanding (beginning vs. advanced, etc.)

I already knew a lot of grammar but it was nice to refresh my memory. It was actually rather difficult to recall the correct names for grammatical terms and stuff. The verbs were easiest of course! It's just funny when you feel basically fluent in a language, that it comes so natural to you, but then when you have to reflect and take apart sentences, it becomes more difficult! English grammar is very hard and confusing. I have never received a proper English grammar class during my schooling and thus believe I am at a disadvantage for learning and teaching other languages. I think that this session was incredibly helpful as I understood basic categories such as noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, etc. However, I did not know the intricate details and rules for using each. I also did not realized the different types of subcategories in the different parts of speech. Excellent session!

I found this unit extremely helpful. I Haven't taken any grammar classes for approximately ten years, so going over all the intricacies of English grammar was a great refresher. I had honestly completely forgotten when a Gerund was, and didn't even know that English had a two syllable rule for forming comparatives and superlatives. I tables on basic, past, past participle, and present participle are super useful as well.

Well, I must say that I have learnt a great deal in this unit--honest to God. You see, when I first started learning the English language, I did not exactly hurry to the nearest Academy that provided good language courses. Actually, I took what I had already studied at school and what I already know as a base, I had pretty good teachers and I had MOVIES. An awful lot of movies; I practically never left home just to absorb a few more words. So the language, for me, was acquired through the spoken words of the actors and then from novels. And so whenever I spoke, whenever I write in English, I was sure of myself because it was what I had read in a book or heard in a movie. Now, that I have become a teacher and loving every tiring bit of it, it became apparent that I should have more knowledge--or rather, have a better source of knowledge--than movies or novels. Usually, as I prepare for a class, I check the unit, see what I will explain to the students, try out different ways to deliver information and... I studied all over again, just like them. So I am very thankful for this unit; because, like the many others that will follow, it has taught me a lot. I feel a lot more confident now, even with the simplest things as in this unit; because I know why certain things in English are the way they are... nouns, adjectives, adverbs, etc. How to use them, why we use them, etc.

Unit 2 helped me clarify the parts of the speech. I was already aware of them but it was useful to revise them, especially the main types of adverbs and prepositions. I believe it is important for a techer to have an in-depth knowledge of the parts of the speach because they are the basic elements of the language. Unit 2 "Parts of Speech"" is very essential and useful as it explains the parts of speech in an easy and interesting way so that anyone reads it can simply understand how to form a correct sentence. It gives the teacher more details on every part of speech. The examples are very clear to be understood Verbs are the action or state in the sentence. And verbs can either be transitive or intransitive. Transitive verbs are always followed directly by an object. In the sentence ""David plays soccer

The content of the unit addressed the identifying and classifying the parts of speech associated with English language learning. I learned that explaining specific points of grammar is often complex and confusing to both teacher and students. Learning the different parts of speech through examples and explanation helped with understanding. I learned for certain parts of speech there are general non-specific rules to follow. It's helpful to have the Grammar in Use textbook nearby for reference.

I think the content of this unit is very useful. It helped me to remember certain terminology and was challenging for my memory. It stated in an easy to understand way how to form sentences and where to place subjects and objects while doing so! It also helped me to refresh my memory and things that I have forgotten. The rules were very clear and explanations were easy to understand. Surprisingly I liked this unit.

Unit module two describes all the parts of speech needed to teach english as a second language. One may think that teaching the parts of speech is a simple task, however, I feel that's resonantly it it one of the most difficult tasks that a teacher may face. This os due to the many types speech, as well as the rules of sentence structure, and the difficulty in explaining how so many rules have exceptions. I think it order to teach the basic parts of speech such as noun, verb, adverb, conjunction, preposition text..patience and creativity must be used for lessons that are interesting and fun as well as relevant to the population you are teaching. Just diagramming sentences will not suffice, and this is a very crucial lesson. As all speaking, reading and writing English depends on ones knowledge of the parts of speech, tenses, and rules.
