The introductory unit on teachers and learners gives and overview of what is best practice for a teacher, and what a good learner will do. It is essential that every teacher understands how best practice can help bring out the best sides of a learner. The various roles of a teacher match the prime learner attributes, and maximum learning occurs when this properly matched. It is also very important that a teacher can differentiate the various levels that may be in their classroom. Though, if one is lucky, the levels are more evenly dispersed, this is often not the case. In my MYP Humanities class, I have students of all language levels, and have to make sure to differentiate between them all simultaneously. Differentiation is very important so that the teacher can maximize Teaching and Learning in their classroom.

I learnt about the roles of a good and effective teacher. A teacher needs to be flexible in changing their roles and adapting to the needs of the students. What role a teacher takes is dependent on the activity and class. A good teacher should put the needs of the class first and teaching second. The level of english speaking ability of a class should determine how a teacher sets activities and engages with the class. A student's willingness to listen and ask questions, desire to learn and accepting of corrections determines if they are a good student.

From this unit I have gained more in-depth knowledge about what it means to be a good teacher. A good teacher will be able to motivate and engage his students, enabling them to be or to become good learners. A teacher has may roles, e.g. manager, facilitator, tutor, assessor, model, etc., and he should alternate these roles in his classroom. A good teacher cares about his students and about their learning. A good learner is motivated, curious and not afraid to ask questions. The language level the student has plays an enormous role in how the teacher should plan his lessons. A common breakdown is: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-intermediate and Advanced. Levels that coincide with the Common european Framework levels, A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.

In this unit I learned more about the relationships and roles of teachers and learners. This included the different roles that teachers may need to take at different periods during class, depending on what is most appropriate for the activity taking place at the time. The unit also covered what makes a good learner, including traits such as listening, desire to learn and ability to accept corrections. The material then covered what differences may be expected from young learners compared to adults, and grouped young learners into learning levels accompanied by the qualities and learning behaviours we may expect from each grouping. Finally, the unit described what some students' motivations to learn English may be, including a desire to study or live in an English-speaking country, for job prospects or to improve school grades.

I learned a lot about the teacher and student relationship in this lesson. It's much more clear to me that to be a good teacher you have to work with your students. Standing in front of the classroom and lecturing isn't the best method. I think this lesson helped me realize that it's possible to have different roles as a teacher. I also learned about the differences between teaching adults to children and situations I wouldn't expect. I never taught adults Before and wouldn't have known that they are more afraid to speak English than small children. This was a good lesson and gave me a lot to think about.

I have learned in this unit how important it Is to motivate students, most of all when they are learning English because they have no choice, and to be a good teacher to see good students. In unit one I learned a lot about what makes a good teacher, the different roles that a teacher will have, and about language levels of future students. It is very important for a teacher to keep their students motivated by providing enough teacher led discussion time and also activities that they can perform on their own. In unit one I also learned that you want to build up a professional, but trusting relationship with your students so that they feel comfortable practicing their English language skills with you and in front of their fellow classmates. It was interesting to learn the differences between young learners and adult learners. Young learners may need to be more active so it would be smart to do more class activities with them. Adult learners will most likely be better listeners, but may also get frustrated easier. The abilities of students will vary and as a teacher we need to get to know our students and see what level that they are starting at and how the best way to build up their particular language skills will be.

Conjunctions join words or groups in a sentence. Conjunctions are 'and' I learned that determining the difference between possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives is tricky for me. I learned valuable information about verbs. I learned new and better ways to explain most of the parts of speech. It was a very good review for me from what I had learned in school many years ago. This unit introduces different parts of a sentence and how each part functions. I learned some new grammar rules that I didn't know Before, such as the order of different adjectives in a sentence and the use of the word 'more' with comparative or superlative adjectives with more than two syllables.

I've studied the parts of speech in English. They were article, pronoun, noun, adjective, adverb, verb, preposition, conjunction. I could understand basic rules and exception, which may make the students confused, so that those differences can be a points when I design a grammar class. By studying the grammatical terms in English, I've got to be confidence in explaining the grammar.
