Unit 1 covered the topics of what makes a good teacher and what makes a good learner. In this section, we were introduced to the many different methods of teaching an instructor can use in the classroom. We identified the many types of learners and which methods of teaching can be used to better ?get through? to the student in a way that works best for them. I learned a lot from this unit and thought it was a great start to the course! One part of the lesson that struck me was the section on the different roles a teacher can play. I have known many ?manager? or ?controller? teachers in my life and have discovered that, in order to be a great teacher, a wide range of roles should be employed to better help the students.

This first unit has been mostly reflective for me as I am already a elementary teacher. It has been interesting to look over my current practices and think about if they are what is best for my students. In the end I found that for many of my students I am doing okay, but for my ELL students, there are a few things I could be doing better such as giving them more opportunities to participate and help encourage them when they are struggling better.

I learned that teachers can play many rules in the classroom from model to participant. With the different levels of students I learned that they all had different experiences, and motivations. I think now that I know the motivations I can play that up more in class with my students.

I do feel that I have learned from this though would consider it more of a refresher for the teacher when they feel derailed from their duties and need to revert to the basics for help. This unit consisted of two parts: Teachers & Learners. All good teachers can be distinguished by certain criteria. A good teacher should possess the following: kind, entertaining, loves to teach, motivating, knowledge of the subject, can interact well with individual students and with the class, includes everyone during the class, can recognize the weakness of students and address them accordingly, and is also able to correct students without discouraging them from learning. There are many different roles a teacher can play in the classroom and a good teacher can determine the correct time for each of those roles. A teacher should be a manager, but not all the time. The teacher can also take on the role as assessor, organizer, facilitator, model, tutor, observer, participator, or prompter. Many of these roles teachers engage in without even realizing it, but sometimes teachers do not know which role is best and if he/she can understand each role and implement it at the right time, I believe that makes the difference in a strong or weak instructor. The second part of this unit was about learners. All learners possess a number of traits. For example, a good learner want to learn- they have a desire to be there. They show this by asking questions and experimenting with the language during class time. Another characteristic of a good learner is they accept criticism. They know their strengths and weaknesses, they know how they learn best and which methods work and which methods do not. Foreign Language learners all have one thing in common, they need or want this language skill for some reason. It could be personal reasons, for example, in order to travel to English speaking countries. It could also be for economic reasons. This is because English is widely used in global business or it could be because a company needs employees with English speaking abilities. Another reason could be social. By this I mean, the student desires to read a newspaper, watch a movie, or talk with English speaking friend. Whatever the reason, they are all still considered to be English Language learners. The last section really covered the different level of proficiency of the learners. They range from Beginner-Advanced. Beginners obviously possess the lowest skills and the Advanced possess the greatest speaking ability. Regardless of level, a good teacher is able to determine the relative proficiency level of the students and create engaging lessons according to their ability. I also think its a good idea for teachers to determine what motives the students and that may help in lesson planning and activities. By tailoring lessons to student's motives, not only engages the students, but keeps them interested.

I learnt that the roles a teacher plays are not limited simply to that of "teaching students content & assessing content from student"" but has a far more 3 dimensional scope where the teacher is effectively multitasking for the whole duration of the class This unit discusses what it means to be a good teacher and a good teacher. It also goes over the different roles of a teacher and the different levels of learning English as a foreign language.I believe I have a very good understanding of this unit and I am ready to move on to unit two. This unit captured the very essence of teachers and learners not only in foreign settings but all classroom settings, reminding me to be ore mindful when approaching students of differing levels, ages and cultural backgrounds.

It was really good to begin this course with an overview of the teacher and learner. I am sure it will be incredibly helpful for me, as a future teacher, to keep in mind the attributes of a good teacher. Keeping these characteristics in mind will help temper or encourage me as I evolve into an EAL teacher. Also, it is helpful for me to understand where my students are coming from and what level of language they are at. I have been learning Russian for the past year. My language teacher has many of these attributes. I can look back now, and appreciate even more, her light-hearted nature. She was very attentive, engaging, and knowledgeable. She was in-tune with each students' learning style and level and kept us all motivated. Reflecting on this lesson and my previous experience as a language learner, I can appreciate why this subject matter builds a strong foundation for a future teacher.

This was a very helpful lesson outlining the characteristics of good teachers and learners. It helped me see my own teaching style as an EFL teacher, and how I could improve. In particular, I think that as an elementary school EFL teacher I could be more of a facilitator than an assessor, focusing lessons on students rather than the required vocabulary and key expressions they are expected to memorize.

I learned more about a teacher's responsibilities and roles in a class than I previously had known. I think you would normally not be aware of most of these as a student, it was good to learn about them and look back on my old school days and understand a bit more about teaching. I've also learned more about students, the difference between age groups and what motivates them. I'm also more aware now of how many levels of understanding a student would have. I've different ideas of which groups, both age wise and understanding would be my favourite to teach. Ideally adults with an advanced level would be the easiest to get an idea across while young children learning the basics would prove difficult to keep their attention and understand concepts but I'm sure I will have different experiences and find a point that I can teach successfully and enjoy doing so.

In reflecting upon this unit, the content was a broad overview on what makes a good teacher(including qualities a teacher should possess and roles a teacher has), a good learner and different levels of language ability. I have learnt that I would make a good teacher as I possess many of the skills listed above however I would need to work on monitoring students from a distance as i tend to want to get too involved.

I feel that I have learned alot just from this first unit alone. The role of the teacher, the motivation that requires from a teacher, and roles of manger, faciliter, and assessor. All these basic words I had never learned or heard of. When I was reading the questions and trying to piece together the outcomes it was good to read them and compare them all. The content of Unit 1 provides vital information of the roles,characteristics and responsibilities of both students and teachers inside of the classroom. I feel very glad to learn the essential qualities that make a good teacher and also determine how teacher roles are divided in different elements in order to manage a class satisfactorily. I did not know a lot about those factors that can make the differences between a good learner and a bad one such as: age, culture,language level, etc; in fact these factors can help me to approach closer to every learner and help them to overcome any obstacle during the learning process. With this unit i have gained a basic knowledge of the complex relationship between teacher and learner. Being more human, enthusiastic and responsible with our pupils help them become more motivated and good learners.

This unit was an overview of the basic elements used in the grammatical construction of sentences and phrases - also known as parts of speech. It dealt not only with the terminology (names of each set and subset) but with their proper use in sentences and in connection with each other. The unit also identified exceptions and gave good examples of each part of speech in general use. I liked the presentation because it very clearly pointed out the difficulties had not only by non-native speakers but by us native speakers as well in identifying certain parts of speech (especially gerunds and participles)and using them correctly in the construction of sentences. I found the overview very useful and took many notes.

As a native speaker, I speak grammatically correct English. However, when questioned about grammatical structures, I often require time to think about the answers. There have been times when I need to consult others or texts because I am unaware of all of the rules. It can be quite stressful and embarrassing. So Unit 2 was quite helpful in providing an easily understandable overview of the English parts of speech. Though I could break down a sentence Before, now I can better explain each part?s function. In addition, the review of formal terms - ?superlative adjectives,? ?intransitive verbs,? ?auxiliary verbs,? ?relative pronouns? - has greatly boosted my confidence. I also gained a better understanding of areas that my students struggle with the most. For example, using categories like ?countable nouns? versus ?uncountable nouns? helps explain why some nouns aren?t pluralized. The rules for when to use ?indefinite? or ?definite? articles often confound my students. However, Unit 2?s general rules are extremely helpful, especially the idea of the ?zero article? or when ?countable nouns? become ?uncountable? when they are added to a preposition. As I mentioned, being able to classify parts of speech increases both my knowledge of English and likewise, my authority in the classroom. I can now term and explain confusing ideas like ?gerunds? (making a verb a noun by adding ?ing) and helping ?auxiliary verbs? (be, do, have). These skills will give me more confidence in myself and in turn, the students will have more confidence in my teaching ability. Understanding and being able to easily explain the lesson materials will help me be a better teacher. This unit pushed my memory way back to primary school. The subtleties of the English language are far more than i remembered. This unit brushed up my grammar and also taught me a few things that i wasn't aware of Before hand such as Gerunds and Conjunctions. We are taught grammar in school here in Australia but we are not taught the names of things we use in every day speech. Very useful.
