Unit 18 describes the many modal verbs that can be used to communicate very drastically different meanings. The usage of modal verbs are numberous. The conjugation of modal verbs however are uniform in that they do not change form according to the subject. Modal verbs communication obligation, politeness, requests, demands, uncertainty and certainty. Another concept learned was the active and passive voice. Each manner of communication emphasises either the subject doing the action or the object that is receiving the action. Active and Passive voice sentence structures are different but still share the same tense. The final concept learned was Phrasal Verbs. Phrasal verbs are a very complicated subject for students to learn because it s a multiword verb that can carry various meanings depending on the context and usage of prepositions, adverbs, adverb phrases and adjectives. Some Phrasal verbs can be separated, some cannot and others do not have direct objects. The suggested method of teaching students phrasal verbs is gradually and within context and usage. Because there are so many various meannig of Phrasal verbs along with the prepositions it was suggested that perhaps students could study them as vocabulary terms. I personally would prefer to teach phrasal verbs in context using plenty of examples and scripts so that it is understood in a more natural form.
