This unit covers how to effectively teach receptive skills (reading and listening) to students in lessons, such as carefully choosing reading and listening materials that are appropriate to the students' language level as well as materials that cover topics of interest to the students. In this unit, I learned that just as reading and listening materials shouldn't be too difficult for students to understand, those materials also shouldn't be too easy for students to understand. There should be a balance so that 1) students can understand some of the material based on what they have already learned in previous lessons (and what they might already know of the topic being covered, such as sports or celebrities), and 2) they are introduced to some new/unknown material (e.g., new vocabulary or phrases) that can engage and challenge them to work towards learning/understanding that material. Therefore, introducing the students to authentic material (in addition to non-authentic material) is important because it exposes them to what they might encounter in real life situations. Of course, authentic material must be carefully chosen so that it's not too difficult for the students to work to comprehend. But at the same time, a teacher shouldn't completely shy away from authentic material--because there can be authentic material that is appropriate for various levels of language ability.
