In this module, I learnt about what 'modal auxiliary verbs' are. Even though I use them everyday, I wasn't aware of the exact grammatical rules behind its use. I now know that they are used to express different ideas depending on the modal verb used. This can vary between polite requests, obligations, permissions and necessities. The passive and active voices I was a little bit more familiar with, and it has to do with the focus of a sentence. Relative clauses can be divided in three different types of clauses, namely independent, dependent and relative clauses (defining/non-defining). I learnt that the difference between a defining and non-defining relative clause relates to whether the information in the relative clause is essential to the understanding of the sentence or not. Depending on the nature of the clause, one can either mistakenly or purposefully suggest information in a very subtle way. Lastly, transitive verbs can be divided into 3 different types and consists of a verb plus one or two particles operating as one item. I struggled a bit to fully understand the differences between each type, and as such, this made me realize that students would also struggle to understand this aspect of English grammar. Therefore, the advice to slowly introduce them during class to expose students to these transitive verbs and the fluency associated with each was very helpful!
