This unit covers evaluation and testing. Regular feedback is important, but it may be also useful to provide formal feedback. Tutorials, evaluations by the students and tests are just some ways to assess a students' language level. Placement tests are used to discover a student's language ability and they generally include a written part and a spoken interview. Progress tests are used to monitor progress and include grammar, vocabulary and a balance of receptive and productive skills. Diagnostic tests are similar in content to the placement tests, but they are used at the beginning of a course, such that the teacher can be aware of the students? language knowledge and prepare the lessons accordingly. When students are taking a course as a preparation for external exams, practise testes are used to access how well they would perform on such examinations. General external examinations are TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language (American English), IELTS - International English Language Testing System and TOEIC - Test of English for International Communication. Finally, the Cambridge Assessment carries out leading-edge academic and operational research on assessment in education and is responsible for a range of assessments all over the world.
