In this unit, I learned about the structure and usage of the past tenses. The past tense structures are almost identical to the present tense structures, with the exception being that they have some time reference of action to the past rather than to the present. I learned that regular past simple verbs add ?ed to the end of the base form of the verb, and that irregular verbs take a completely different form. In addition to this, it dawned on me that like the past participles learned in earlier units, there are many irregular past simple verbs? this may mean that students will need extra exposure and practice using those verbs in order to remember them, as no word patterns may necessarily exist among all of the irregular verbs?card games, like memory, would be fun practice for this. Other great activities to help students practice the past tenses include distributing prompt cards or picture cards depicting action, and having the students create sentences or stories about what they see on the cards. A more kinesthetic approach would include having the students mime an activity from a given prompt card while their classmates guess what it is using the correct past tense structure. Discussing past holidays, role-playing an interview, and creating a curriculum vitae or resume would also be appropriate and engaging activities, that latter particularly for older students.
