Unit 13 is all about pronunciation and phonology. This has been one of the most challenging lessons for me, but in a strange way, I enjoyed it very much. There is much more to be learned about pronunciation than I had imagined. The unit goes over intonation, stress and the lack of it, sound joining such as linking, and the international phonemic alphabet. It also goes over place and manner of articulation. Of course, several suggestions are given as to what types of exercises can be used by a teacher in teaching and demonstrating the different categories of phonology and pronunciation of words. Intonation, it is explained, is the variation in volume and pitch that we use in speaking whole sentences. Two different types are the rise/fall intonation and the fall/rise intonation. The first is used, for example, in making statements. The second type of intonation is requesting, or even demanding a response from the listener. One suggestion for teaching intonation would be to use humming or singing out sentences in order for the student to more easily hear the intonation. Stress, on the other hand, is emphasis on a particular word, words or syllable. Whichever word is stressed can drastically change the meaning in a sentence. We can only stress syllables, also.
