This unit presents the English tense system. Teaching tenses can be difficult for teachers and complicated for English learners. Teachers must teach in a methodical manner to help facilitate learning. Students will most likely maximize talk time during the activate stage of learning the tenses and their verb conjugations. There are four forms of the present tense outlined in this course. The first form is the \"present simple.\" It typically expresses universal fact, routines or habits. Secondly, there is the \"present continuous\" or \"present progressive.\" This form expresses actions that are occurring now in a continuous manner, and usually ends in ing. Thirdly, the \"present perfect\" is used to express actions that occurred in the recent past continuing into the future. This tense is formed with have or has. Lastly, the \"present perfect continuous\" usually refers to a time reference and expresses an ongoing activity that started in the past and is continued until the present. Two auxiliary verbs, have been and has been are indicated in the sentence structure. A few good teaching tips for teachers to foster learning of tenses are as follows: 1. Have students focus on the structure of the sentence, not the usage. 2. Maximize student talk time. 3. Encourage students to use the language freely 4. Focus on the target language. 5. Don't provide worksheets for the activate stage.
