Starting this course has been challenging for me. I want to be a teacher and I know I have the qualities to be a good teacher. But I also need knowledge. And that is what I need to learn in this course. It's a long time since I have done formal study and I feel nervous. It's good for me to feel nervous, because even though I feel uncomfortable it can help me understand my students, especially adult learners. We bring life experience of-course, but we also bring our fears of not doing well, not meeting expectations. In Unit 1 we learnt the characteristics of a good teacher. My understanding is that essentially a good teacher: always puts the student first, always is fair, is honest, always is the first in the class room, and he is always going to be available for the students. In this unit we learnt the different roles that a teacher can use in a lesson. These include: to be a model, a prompter, assessor, monitor, manager, tutor, facilitator, and a participant. On reflection I think I am most naturally an assessor because I like to be fair and consistent with all students and help them learn. We also learnt about different learners and stages of learning. These include Beginner/Starter, Elementary, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced. We learnt about the different ages of learners including very young learners through to adults and the different characteristics these learners have.
