Unit two focused on the different parts of speech. Understanding the parts of speech is important to teaching others the English language. The unit started with nouns, words that name. There are common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective nouns. Next adjectives were described as describing words. When there are more than on adjective in a sentence they generally go in the order: size, age, color, material, noun. Adjectives also make comparisons. These can be comparative (adjective + er than) or superlative (adjective + est). Then there are articles, which can be definite (the) or indefinite (a and an). Verbs were next. There are transitive verbs, those followed by the object, and intransitive verbs. The object cannot follow intransitive verbs. There are different forms of verbs: base form, past simple, past participle, and present participle. Next, there are adverbs, which add meaning and information to an action. Adding ly to an adjective forms most adverbs. They are often placed after the object of a transitive verb or placed between the subject and verb or auxiliary verb and verb. There are also gerunds. These are a verb with the ending ing that is used as a noun. Pronouns were next, which are replacements for nouns. Finally, the unit described prepositions and conjunctions. Prepositions show a relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other word. Conjunctions join words or groups.
