Unit 20 presents some common problems a teacher may face during his/her daily routine. Some good practices are given along with the issues to help the understanding of the situations and provide possible solutions. Sometimes solutions take time and they are part of the teacher?s behaviours or character: it might be more a matter of changing approach than doing something specific. A very crucial point is represented by the first lesson: it creates the rapport among the students and, above all, between the teacher and the students. In order to fully engage the students, warmers and ice-breaking games are essential, even when facing a teenager or adult class. They allow involving the students, making them take an active part of the learning process. Different levels of English among students of the same class might create difficulties about keeping the lesson interesting for the strong students and not overdoing for the weak ones. This can be addressed paring students with different levels, but when the difference is wide the only strategy is dividing the class (providing different material or giving different tasks on the same material). Finally, a not simple issue is teaching effectively large classes. Once the discipline is maintained well, the teacher should focus on individual worksheets or pair/group activities, being very careful of giving precise and clear instructions prior to starting.
