This unit covered the broad topic of teaching new language. The focus was on vocabulary, grammar, and functions. In general, the number of words that students can understand is greater than the number of words that they can actively use in conversation. When teaching new vocabulary, it?s important to consider a few different factors. How often specific words are used, as well as how useful the vocabulary is for the particular students are two examples. Multiple approaches may be used to teach new vocabulary, one of which is the ?straight arrow? ESA method. Grammar is crucial for learning a new language. When teaching grammar, the meaning, usage, and form of the language should be made extremely clear to the students. As with teaching vocabulary, there are many ways to go about teaching grammar. One example approach is to use the patchwork ESA method. Language functions, such as invitations and agreements, are necessary for having everyday conversations. It?s important to keep in mind the situations in which certain language is used. For example, the students should be made aware of the level of formality of the expressions that they are studying. To teach functions, it?s best to actually use the language, therefore the boomerang ESA method is one particularly good way to practice. Within this approach, the usage of role-play can be emphasized to increase student talk-time.
