There are 4 basic skills: Receptive (Reading & listening) and Productive (Speaking & Writing). It is better to include all of them into a class as it's a balanced approach. There are 2 reasons for reading: for a purpose and fpr entertainment. We grasp the meaning from a pre-existing knowledge of the world. We use not only eyes and ears, we involve our mind to process words to gain true understanding. Understanding the context will depend of expertise in predictive skill, scanning, skimming, detailed info, deduction from a context. To avoid potential problems, a teacher should pre-teach some vocabulary to remove obstacles in udnerstanding. The texts must be selected carefully. There are authentic (non designed for learners) and non-authentic texts (more suitable for students). It's better to focus on what students know, than how much the don't. Basic keys to successful receptive skills: an interesting material; building interest before reading/ listening; pre-teahcing essential vocabulary or complicated structures; varying types of the material; practicing different skills; using realistic comprehension tasks; incorporating activate phases naturally leading on from the text. Promote understanding than checking understanding. In Unit 11 a typical receptive skills lesson in the format of \"patchwork\" was given, with the following stages: engage, study, engage, study, activate, study, activate.
