Unit 7 explained methods for teaching vocabulary, grammar, and functions of a language. According to ITTT, students need: 1. To be exposed to the new language. 2. To understand its meaning. 3. To understand how it's constructed. 4. To practice and produce the language. In terms of vocabulary, students will have an easier or more difficult time learning the new vocab depending on how similar or different it is from their own native language, commonalities to the English words they have already learned, the level of difficulty with spelling and pronunciation of the word(s), and appropriateness/usage of the words. Teachers should select new vocab based on: A. relevancy/appropriateness to the students, B. how it will be used to accomplish the task, C. frequency of use, D. ability to teach. On the other hand, students need to know the words' meaning, usage, grammar/where it fits within the sentence, interaction between other words, spelling, and pronunciation. In terms of grammar, grammar should be taught based on the level of the class and how it fits into the complete course syllabus. Students should learn the meaning, usage, forms/patterns, and how spoken vs. written forms can change/be different. For all lessons, teachers should focus on the main learning objective. Furthermore, the type of ESA (straight-arrow, boomerang, patchwork) should be used based on the activity on-hand and that lesson's learning objective.
