This unit identified all the basic parts of speech, their functions, and some common points of confusion associated with them. While most of the content was familiar to me, there were some terms and ideas that I hadn?t heard before. The term \"zero article\" is new to me and could be useful when teaching about when it is necessary to leave out a definite article. I?ve heard of state and action verbs, but the terms transitive and intransitive are new. Some transitive verbs must take an object, like cut or make, and some have the option to take an object, like eat or cook. It was helpful to see the five main types of adverbs defined and explained. I can also see how the placement of adverbs could be difficult for students. Making the distinction between transitive (adverb placed after the direct object) and intransitive (adverb placed after the verb) could help. There were also some useful suggestions for exercises to work on adverbs and word order. I?ve already read a little about the gerund form, but it is interesting to think of it as acting as either a subject or an object. It helps to differentiate the gerund from the present participle, which is also the -ing form of the verb. I always confuse possessive pronouns with possessive adjectives. When I think about a pronoun as a replacement for a noun, it makes sense. 'My' is an adjective because it is modifying a noun; it isn?t a noun itself.
