In this unit, I learned about theories regarding development and learning. The unit introduced four main learning and behaviour theories. Firstly, maturation theory states that biological processes will ensure a set process of development regardless of stimuli. Secondly, environmental theory states the opposite ? that we develop only as a response to our environment. Thirdly, constructivism proposes a hybrid of these first two ideas, and finally cognitive developmentalists suggests that our development consists of a series of stages. The unit explained how we acquired our own native tongue (LI) naturally from a young age through a variety of experiences. The unit then detailed things that are know about language acquisition, including that there is no ?magic age? for language acquisition, that L2 study should mimic L1 acquisition as much as possible and that language learning should have a meaningful context. Approaches to teaching should be varied depending on the level. For example, ages 5-9 should be high energy with short activities, and ages 9-13 should include talking with peers and thinking. The unit detailed various seating arrangements, and each has its advantages and drawbacks. For example, the circular layout means that everyone is visible, but makes board work difficult. Finally, the unit also detailed the various roles for the teacher in the class, including policeman, instructor and facilitator.
