This unit presents three fundamental components of the English language that students must learn to begin to speak the language fluently. Teaching vocabulary, grammar, and language functions are the key aspects that I learned about in this module. A big consideration when teaching vocabulary is choosing the appropriate words to teach. Teachers must also take into consideration how frequent the words will be used and their applications in different settings. English learners must know the meaning, use of grammar, interaction, spelling and pronunciation of vocabulary to use words effectively. A \"straight arrow\" ESA lesson would be appropriate when teaching vocabulary. When introducing grammatical structures students will need to know what the language means, the proper use of the language, forms and patterns, and the difference in spoken and written forms. When a teacher is presenting language functions he/she must also include the appropriacy based on the type of language being used, i.e formal, informal, tentative or technical. The study of language functions require students to activate the language and is most productively used with the boomerang and patchwork type of ESA. The basic tenets for teaching vocabulary, grammar and functions share overlapping components.Teachers must be aware of the appropriateness, meaning, and how the language is used,to help student to master the application of the language effectively.
