This unit focus on the auxiliar verbs, the passive form, the relative clauses and phrasal verbs. The modal auxiliar verbs are use to express possibility, suggestion, advice, prohibition, probability, obligation and ability. They increase the meaning of the main verb of the sentence and they go before it. The main verb is in its base form and the modals don't change in form according to person. They are: should, need to, needn't, ought, must, have to, have got to, can, could, may, might, shall, should, would, will. Modals may also be used to express formal ideas. For exemple, can and may have the same meaning but may it is suggested to be more polite. Teachers may involve the students to learn the modals by role-play activities, like for example the one of the doctor and the patient or the one of the receptionist of an hotel and a customer. Moreover, teachers can use cards that show specific signs in order to let the learners guess what must or mustn't be done. The passive form is used when the speaker doesn't want to focus the attention on the agent or doer (even performer) of an action. Anyway if the speaker wants to express the contrary he/she will use a phrase with by. It is formed by the verb to be (in its present,past,future forms) and the past participle.
