Unit Seven covered the importance of teaching receptive skills which include the skills of reading and listening. It covered how reading is often easier for students since it is permanently recorded and accessible multiple times, whereas listening often requires the student to grasp the meaning almost instantly. It included reading and listening for a purpose versus for entertainment as well as different kinds of receptive skills, including predictive, scanning, skimming, looking for details, and deduction. The unit also covered potential issues and how to address them, such as pre-teaching difficult vocabulary, selecting texts according to difficulty and topic interest, and creating tasks associated with receptive skills in order to generate more interest. It then provided a Patchwork lesson plan on teaching about Elvis as well as examples of activities based on comparison statements and clothing. This unit was short and covered material that I have been familiar with in the classroom before, but I learned that remembering to select texts that are adequate for the learner level as well as creating a level of authenticity in order to build confidence is important. I also was inspired to create a small survey that would not only gauge prior levels of English at the beginning of the class but also gather information about interests and topics based on the section about potential problems and solutions in terms of teaching receptive skills.
