This section is a refresher on grammar for the past tense. Past simple adds the suffix ?ed?, with ?did not? or the abbreviated ?didn?t? for the negative form. The question form adds did plus the subject before the base form. Irregular verbs change form, ?see? becomes ?saw? ?pay? becomes ?paid? etc. Past continuous uses the auxiliary verbs ?was? or ?were? and the verb with the suffix ?ing?. The past form insets ?not? between the auxiliary verb and the participle. The question form uses the auxiliary verb then the subject, then the suffix ?ing?. It is used for interrupted actions, gradual development that took place in the past, or something that started in the past and likely continued after it. Past perfect uses [subject] ?had? [past participle] in the affirmative, [subject] ?had not? [past participle] in the negative and ?had? [subject] [past participle] in the question form. It is used for things that happened before a given action in the past. Past perfect continuous uses [subject] ?had been? [verb]+?ing? in the affirmative, [subject] ?had not been? [verb]+?ing? in the negative and ?had been? [subject] [verb]+?ing? in the question form. It is used for actions that were ongoing in the past, up until the moment spoken about.
