I learned a variety of things from this unit on what it takes to be a good teacher, and how to ensure that my students are motivated learners. When it comes to learning English, I had never thought about the fact that adult learners are more likely to be motivated than younger learners (specifically ones in middle or high school). This makes more sense when considering my own language learning desires, as I am significantly more motivated now than I was in my youth. Additionally, there are many different roles that teachers should utilize to create an effective learning environment. It is clear to me that teachers must switch up the role they are utilizing from time to time while teaching class. This is because it prevents the style from becoming dull or boring, and is more likely to keep the students involved as they must always be prepared for something new. Doing this too often, of course, could also present problems as well, because it is just as important for students to have some understanding of what class is like as it is to keep them interested. If they are confused by constantly changing structure, then it is unlikely that they would be able to understand what it is they are supposed to be learning. Due to this, it may be best to choose a set of roles to utilize in teaching English instead of attempting to use all of them. This way it keeps things new while also preventing student confusion when a new teaching style is introduced.
