There are four basic skills reading and listening (receptive skills), speaking and writing (productive skills). When it involves teaching any of these skills all of them are equally important to be taught to the students. We read and listen generally for the two following reasons: for a purpose, and for entertainment. Receptive skills aren't just simply about using your eyes and ears to absorb any information, but mostly based on perception and whether or not our minds can understand the words being presented to them. We use the following skills: 1.Predictive skills, 2.scanning (specific information), 3.skimming (to understand general ideas) 4.absorbing detailed information, 5.deduction from context. Common problems for language learners include sentence length, word length and unfamiliar words. These present more of a problem during listening than compared to reading. These problems are usually overcome by: 1.pre-teaching vocabulary, i.e. teaching the students difficult or new words and grammar points before going forward with the lesson 2.careful selection of texts, i.e. choosing authentic or non-authentic texts, texts based on the level of the students. Choosing the right topics for the students is absolutely important. Carefully picking a variety of topics helps in keeping all students interested in wanting to read and listen as all students will have different opinions on what they find entertaining and interesting.
