A teacher?s technique for teaching is essential in how he or she delivers to the students. There are various techniques and method to teaching such as Grammar-Translation, Audio-lingualism, the Silent Way amongst others. These techniques enhance the teaching style of each lesson being taught in the classroom. They also aid in motivating students and engaging them to appreciate learning the English language. One effective method that can assist with the aforementioned is ?ESA?-Engage, Study and Activate put forward by Jeremy Harmer. This approach gives the teacher a great deal of flexibility in the classroom. The Engage stage of the lesson is a more relaxed phase where by the teacher try to arouse the students and get them involved in the lesson. Activities such as games, music, story-telling are used here. However, as progression of the student takes place, the Study stage is used. Here, students focus on the language and how it is constructed. Elicitation is essential at this stage. Finally, in the Activate stage, the student is encouraged to use all or any of the language they know. Communication in this stage is flexible and free. To achieve this stage, activities should as role play, debates, story writing are used. Also, another technique a teacher should have is the ability to correct students. This correction ability takes time and experience to be perfect as too much correction can be equally as off-putting as too little.
