The different between the present tenses and the past tenses is that the past tenses relates to past time period. The past simple tense is used for actions completed at a definite time in the past.It is also used when the action clearly took place at a definite time even though this time is not mentioned. The past simple takes the form[ed]at the end of the verb called regular verb.Irregular past simple tense is not created simply by adding {ed].The form of the verb changes. For example;go-went,eat-ate. The past continous is used to express an action which began before that timeand probably continued after it.It always requires some time reference. We use the past continous tense in description. The past perfect tense is the past in the past or the past viewed from another past view point. The past perfect continous tense talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continously up to the past moment that we are thinking about. We don,t know or are not concerned whether or not it continued after. I learned that there is only one past simple verb which has two forms according to person. This is the verb to 'be'.
