This unit looked at the use of materials in the classroom, both in written and electronic form. Materials are anything that the teacher brings to the classroom to assist with teaching, including worksheets, recordings, pictures, magazines or realia. These can be classed as authentic (i.e. made for a real purpose) or inauthentic (made for classroom use). Authentic materials can be more realistic and less predictable than inauthentic materials. Inauthentic materials should be designed with a clear idea of the target language and how the materials will be used, including considerations of the mechanics of the use of these materials. Students need a clear demonstration of how to use the materials, and they should be asked questions that confirm what they have to do for each activity. The unit discussed the importance of a lesson plan as a detailed record of what was taught or what will be taught. It also covered what specific items should be included in the plan, and reminded us not to stick blindly to the plan at the expense of student needs. This unit also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of course books, and methods of deviating from the book as required. Finally, this unit discussed classroom management, and encouraged teachers to use their voice, eye contact, student names and various classroom layouts to manage problem behaviour. It?s also more effective to focus on the problem behaviour tham to lose your temper or make empty threats.
